Writer: Ta-Nehisi Coates / Artist: Bob Quinn / Marvel Comics

Captain America #21 is a mostly by-the-numbers Captain America comic that is essentially everything bad about by-the-numbers Captain America comics. There’s a lot happening here in this book and almost none of it is even remotely interesting.

First off, I appreciate a slow burn as much as the next guy, but this book didn’t seem to progress the story much further from the obligatory “story so far” synopsis on the credits page. I’m pretty sure I downloaded my 32-GB Call of Duty update at faster speeds than this story moves. And there are either pivotal or terrible things that just get glazed over like nothing.

One of the first things we see in this comic is Alexander Lukin and his wife casually overseeing a dark skinned person being auctioned off in some sort of human trafficking trade, and it’s only acknowledged once in a quippy exchange. There’s a flesh trade depicted in 2020’s social climate and it’s in the background of a phone conversation. And then there’s all the kooky magic lore that (I’m guessing here) that I highly doubt fans read this comic for. Captain America seems highly effective when he’s punching Nazis or speaking truth to power with a good old-fashioned shield to the face.

Movies like Winter Soldier proved that Cap is essentially the ultimate action hero, but this story feels convoluted with all the kooky magic lore and soul stealing. Now, it’s not fair to lay this at Ta-Nehisi Coates’ doorstep because this sort of thing has gone on since long before his tenure, but #21 makes it so glaring that it’s a rough read. As for the artwork, there’s something all too plain about Bob Quinn’s pencils here. Although it’s mostly the script’s fault, and not his, that nothing really happens in this issue, there still isn’t much that truly jumps off of the panels or excites the senses.

Bottom Line: It’s a well-meaning story, but there’s too much involved for us to still have so many questions in such a stagnant chapter in this bizarre story. Even the most exciting parts could have been extra “director’s cut” pages in another issue. It’s a no from me.

5 bizarre Anthony Mackie quotes out of 10.

It’s Wednesday & It’s Mid Week in Review (MWIR) Time! Airing 8pm ET; The Topics? Comic Creator, Dedren Snead’s New Project; Continuing Sunday’s Convo; More Umbrella Academy; Children in Handcuffs in CO + More!

http://www.afronerd.com/2020/08/its-wednesday-its-mid-week-in-review.html

Here we go! Like a Nike ad, let's just do it!  Welcome to a new and "freshly baked" installment from the Afronerd Radio engine, better known as Wednesday's Mid Week in Review, airing 8pm eastern on your friendly neighborhood BTalk 100 platform.  Join your favorite (or is that only) AFROnerdist broadcasters as they wax about the following (mid) weekly topics:  friend of the show (and convention circuit....if we have those again..sigh) and noted animator/graphic novelist, Dedren Snead (Sorghum & Spear) stops by to discuss a number of projects he has in the works-one of which is the launch of Subsume Media; per usual, we try to pick up some of the issues we couldn't cover from the last Grindhouse show;  more thoughts about Netflix' Umbrella Academy S2;  yet another horror story involving what appears to be the mistreatment of a black family mistakenly handcuffed (children forced to lay on the ground in the summer heat!) and held at gunpoint by Aurora, CO police

So folks (including actor Ryan Reynolds and his bride, Blake Lively) just deduced that maybe getting married on a former slave plantation isn't as bucolic as it seems, huh?;  in the aftermath of Hollywood enacting a type of voice acting realignment concerning animated portrayals in the media, some "voices" from The Simpsons are weighing in on the issue (from MarySue.com);  it looks like Mulan is heading for Disney plus after all....for a price on September 4th (how long will it take for Disney/Marvel's Black Widow to get the same deal?); Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and ex-wife, Dany Garcia buy the XFL for purportedly $15 million; so as Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. comes to close after seven seasons, how will the famed and fictional clandestine organization continue thematically as the MCU continues on the silver screen?;  thoughts about Beyonce's Black is King visual album:

Dburt asks...is anyone prepped to do our own Harlem Black Comic Book festival in a virtual format (a la SDCC and the more recently announced, NYCC?);  And lastly, Comicbook.com pontificates on where the animated Avatar "Airbender" franchise can go in the future.  Call in LIVE at 508-645-0100.

"I can tell by the masks that you're bad guys.  Nice touch.  Almost intimidating.  But the minivan ruins the effect. Maybe that's how y'all do it here in New Orleans, but the rest of the world--New York, Madripoor, Boise--the bad guys don't roll up in minivans.  And there ain't but three of you.  A van that big can comfortably seat eight.  Seems like you don't take your villainy serious."-Power Man (Luke Cage)

KeKe Wyatt is not pregnant. In an Instagram Live video Thursday, the singer, who was visibly annoyed by the speculation, shot down reports that she is expecting her ninth biological child.

“What’s funny is all of the people talking about congratulations,” said Wyatt. “All of the people who know me know that I would just say something.”

The “My First Love” singer believes that the rumors began swirling after she experienced a slight wardrobe malfunction on stage. According to Wyatt, the boning of her corset got bent during her ride to the venue, which resulted in a slight protrusion in her midsection when she appeared on stage.

“When it bends, it makes the stomach look bigger than what it is,” Wyatt explained. “It was in the dress and no, I’m not pregnant. I don’t want to be pregnant.

“So no, not pregnant here,” she went on. “Ain’t interested in being pregnant.”

While on the subject, the mother of eight also addressed people who make disparaging comments about the size of her family.

“I ain’t get no stimulus check. I ain’t get none of that. So, everybody that’s talking all of this stimulus check mess, I don’t live off of the government, baby,” she said. “I live off the Holy Ghost, my work, and my husband. We don’t need the government’s money.”

In January, Wyatt welcomed her eighth child, Ke’Riah Darling.

“My husband Zackariah Darring and I are so happy to announce that we are expecting our new bundle of joy,” the singer exclaimed in an Instagram post back in October. “We are excited to welcome the 10th addition to our beautiful family. Stay tuned for the release date & information for my new YouTube Series “The Keke Show” where you will see me balancing Wife, Mommy and Artist!!! Trust me.. it’s never a dull moment with my family.”

Wyatt is also the mother of two stepchildren.

TROLLHUNTERS Returns in 2021 in an All-New Animated Movie

https://nerdist.com/article/guillermo-del-toro-trollhunters-animated-movie-rise-of-the-titans-netflix/

Guillermo del Toro’s Trollhunters animated series became an instant sensation when it debuted on Netflix in 2016. It ran for three seasons and spawned a whole universe of shows in the Tales of Arcadia universe. That includes 3Below and the upcoming Wizards.  But in 2021, Trollhunters officially returns for an all-new animated movie on Netflix, titled Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans.

We don’t know which characters are returning for this sequel film, but we expect to hear much more about this project in the coming months. For now, all we have is this title treatment, which you can see below.

Netflix / DreamWorks Animation

Guillermo del Toro expanded the world of Trollhunters  into a whole a trilogy of animated series, which he then named Tales of Arcadia. The first extension of the Trollhunters universe was 3Below. That show focused on two aliens of royal lineage and their bodyguard. They make an escape from their home planet and crash land on Earth in Arcadia. This is the same location where Trollhunters takes place.

On the surface, Arcadia appears to be a slice of timeless Americana. However, it is no ordinary town. It lies at the center of magical and mystical lines that make it a nexus for many battles among otherworldly creatures. Among them are trolls, aliens, and wizards. Speaking of, Wizards will be the third series, uniting the three disparate worlds of trolls, aliens, and wizards.

The original Trollhunters featured a stellar cast, which included Kelsey Grammer, The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun, del Toro’s Hellboy and Pacific Rim buddy Ron Perlman, and the late Anton Yelchin. Yelchin played the main role of Trollhunter Jim Lake Jr., through seasons one and two and parts of the third season. Emile Hirsch replaced Yelchin in the latter part of season three. It’s unknown if Hirsch and the others are returning for this film or if it will feature different characters all together. Johane Matte, Franisco Ruiz Velasco, and Andrew L. Schmidt are directing.

Wizards drops its first season of ten episodes on August 7. Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans debuts sometime in 2021.
