Universal and Peacock have acquired worldwide rights to create new IP based on the Exorcist franchise in partnership with Blumhouse and Morgan Creek.

Encompassing three films in total, the deal further solidifies the partnership between Universal and Peacock. Along with Universal’s celebrated history with Blumhouse, the deal gives both property and audiences optionality without forgoing the theatrical experience.

Academy-Award® Nominee Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton, One Night In Miami) is set to kick off the fresh new take of the beloved property – a continuation of the quintessential possession horror film.

Academy-Award® Winner Ellen Burstyn (Pieces of a Woman, Requiem for a Dream) will also reprise her role as Chris MacNeil.

David Gordon Green (Halloween Kills, Halloween) will direct the first film – reuniting him with Universal and Blumhouse after the success of reviving the Halloween franchise.

“There’s no better time to be joining forces with the team at Peacock, reuniting with the great team at Universal and finally getting to work with my friends at Blumhouse, than on this classic franchise, ” said David Robinson, Morgan Creek President. “David Gordon Green, Danny McBride, Scott Teems and Peter Sattler have put together a compelling continuation of this iconic tale and I can’t wait to bring this to fans around the world.”

“Blumhouse has always experienced incredible partnership from the team at Universal, and I’m grateful to Donna Langley and Jimmy Horowitz for believing in the vision of David’s film and having the foresight to be flexible with distribution, so the team feels top notch support through the lifeline of the film. They’re committed to theatrical exhibition and will also serving streaming viewers well by bringing an exciting franchise like the ‘Exorcist’ to Peacock too,” said Jason Blum, CEO and Founder of Blumhouse. “I’m grateful to be working with David Robinson and the great team at Morgan Creek on this iconic franchise.”

Halloween alone resulted in more than $250 million in box office worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing chapter in the four-decade franchise. It also set a new record for the biggest opening weekend in history for a horror film starring a woman (Jamie Lee Curtis).

The first film in the trilogy will be released theatrically on October 13, 2023.

The deal is indicative of the continued success between Universal and Blumhouse. Over the last eight years the partnership has had a remarkable run with original box office breakout hits like Get Out, Split, and The Invisible Man. Blumhouse and Universal films have collectively grossed more than $3 billion at the worldwide box office, with 10 No. 1 openings at the domestic box office.

The original 1973 film, The Exorcist has grossed over $441 million to date, making it the highest domestic grossing horror film for a 44-year-long run. The picture was also nominated for 10 Academy-Awards®, including one for Ellen Burstyn, who was nominated for Best Actress. The film also nabbed the honor of being the first horror film ever nominated for Best Picture.

Scott Teems (Halloween Kills, The Quarry), Danny McBride (Halloween Kills, Halloween) and David Gordon Green teamed up for the story being penned by Peter Sattler (Broken Diamonds) and David Gordon Green.

Jason Blum will produce on behalf of Blumhouse. David Robinson and James Robinson will produce for Morgan Creek. David Gordon Green, Danny McBride and Couper Samuelson will executive produce. Ryan Turek is overseeing the project for Blumhouse.

Things We Saw Today: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Battle Wedding Crashers in New Trailer

https://www.themarysue.com/legends-of-tomorrow-battle-wedding-crashers-in-new-trailer/

An Avalance wedding, intergalactic bowling, and a Clue-themed murder mystery game? It’s all in a days’ work for DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. The fan favorite Arrowverse series had its Comic-Con@Home panel today, where they premiered their season 6b trailer. A lot has happened to the crew of the Waverider over the past season, and the showrunners and cast teased what awaits in season 7.

Season 6b will see the return of Matt Ryan’s John Constantine, who will wrap up his run as the occult detective at the end of the season. However, it won’t be the end of Ryan’s tenure on the show: he will return in season 7 as an entirely new character, Welsh doctor Gwyn Davies, “an eccentric scientist from the early 20th century who might be the team’s only hope next season.” Season 7 will find the Legends stranded in the past sans their technology, with Ryan’s Dr. Davies as the only man who can help them return to the Waverider.

Ryan said of the roles, “As everyone who loves him knows, in the end, John Constantine will walk his path alone. The time has come for John to part ways with the Legends, and for me to part ways with John. I’m really excited to be creating this new role on the show and having some fun with it—discovering how this new character fits in and causes some trouble for the Legends.”

Another familiar face will be joining the crew, as Amy Louise Pemberton will finally play the ship’s AI Gideon in the flesh. Pemberton has voiced Gideon since the beginning of the series, and while she has appeared a handful of times in her corporeal form, the change looks to be permanent.

Legends of Tomorrow also announced the release of a 21-track soundtrack album featuring the series’ musical numbers, including the David Bowie–inspired “Space Girl”, Brandon Routh’s “Mr. Parker’s Cul-De-Sac”, and many more favorites. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: The Mixtape (Songs from the Original Television Soundtrack) will be available on Spotify, iTunes, YouTube, Amazon, and more on August 20.

What's shakin' folks! It's that time  AGAIN!  Check out a new installment of Afronerd Radio's The Grindhouse broadcast airing this Sunday at 6 p. m. eastern on the BTalk 100 internet radio platform. The topics to be unpacked by your local AFROnerdist hosts are:  two stories hitting the cyberwebs that appear to be seemingly connected....the first story involves the growing popularity of Atlanta, GA restaurant, "The Bando" that channels ghettoized stereotypes with delicacies such as "Crack Wings"

The second narrative highlights certain aspects of the culture/society being lowered stemming from comedienne, Monique's recent commentary concerning the sloven appearance of some Black women she has encountered during her travels.  Unfortunately, quite a few social media responses were not favorable toward her (rather astute) observations:

The Vertigo comic, Sweet Tooth gets its close up/cinematic translation via Netflix as it premieres this weekend; TheMarySue.com site highlights up and coming Blerd and CEO (Weird Enough Productions), Tony Weaver and his manga series, The Uncommons; hopefully, Dburt will get around to actually having that state of crypto discussion; sci-fi/afrofuturism author, N.K. Jemisin, just inked a 7-figure deal with TriStar Pictures allowing her to adapt her Broken Earth trilogy to film.  Lastly, after discussing the cancellation of Netflix' Jupiter's Legacy and how we thought that a low budget might've been an issue....well it turns out it cost 200M!!!  Where did the money go?
