A shot from Gillette Venus's "skinclusive" Animal Crossing campaign.

A few days ago, I scrolled past a targeted ad on Twitter. The ad was for the shaving company Gillette Venus and featured Animal Crossing player characters. I didn’t think much of it at first, as brands using the game to advertise isn’t anything new.

As it turns out, this was a lot more than a simple ad. Gillette Venus has partnered with the game to make it, as they’ve branded the endeavor, “skinclusive.” Animal Crossing allows you to customize your character, though, as with most games, the choices are fairly limited. (Although I do love that things like hairstyles and dress are not confined by gender.)

What Gillette Venus has done is created a bunch of design codes for a variety of skin types, including freckles, acne, psoriasis, eczema, vitiligo, and more. There are also codes for body-related things like curves, surgery scars, stretch marks, burns, and cellulite. In all, there are 19 skin types and eight skin tones, totalling 264 possible new designs. You can see the designs in the Lookbook put together by the brand.

Designer Nicole Cuddihy writes:

As I designed, I thought of those in my own life who represent each skin type. I wanted to create designs I knew they would cherish– a bright dress for my confident friend who never hides her acne, a fashionable look for my artistic friend with a deep scar, and a feminine lacy top for my courageous aunt who underwent a mastectomy. I am incredibly excited to bring you this collection, in partnership with Venus.

This sort of detail was already something players had the option to do, as we can design patterns as face paint. But there’s something very emboldening about having your own specific skin design created for you, especially on such a mass level. Many of the designs GV has created are things most of us would think of as “flaws” in ourselves. Sure, this is a product tie-in and there’s always reason to be cynical of that but honestly, having a company create these designs of those “flaws” because they actually see them as marketable can feel super empowering (in pretty much the only way capitalism can be empowering).

Things We Saw Today: Animal Crossing Is Partnering With Gillette Venus to Make the Game More “Skinclusive”

Trump Turns To Dog-Whistle Politics After Announcement Of Black Woman VP Pick

https://www.essence.com/news/donald-trump-suburban-housewife-vote/

Donald Trump appears to be returning to his political roots and tapping into the fears of white America to gain momentum for his campaign. On Wednesday, the impeached president suggested in a tweet that suburban housewives (read: white women) should be fearful of the low-income housing (read: low wage earners) that would take over their neighborhoods if Biden were to win.

“The ‘suburban housewife’ will be voting for me. They want safety & are thrilled that I ended the long running program where low income housing would invade their neighborhood,” Trump wrote. “Biden would reinstall it, in a bigger form, with Corey Booker in charge!”

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 12, 2020

The tweet is reminiscent of a 2016 campaign tactic where Trump often told the “suburban housewife” that if Democrats, later Hillary Clinton, won the election, the MS13 gang would overrun her neighborhood and Mexicans would rape and murder her family members. Trump used these methods throughout his campaign and has touched on some of his same racist speaking points throughout his time at the White House. Today’s tweet suggests the campaign is in full gear.

In addition to the overt rhetoric, Trump also suggests that Biden, like him, would pick the Black, male candidate who ran against him to be in charge of HUD (Housing and Urban Development). Biden has not announced his plans for a HUD Secretary, nor do the policies he’s rolled out suggest Trump’s tweet has any basis of truth. But neither will negate the fact that Trump can successfully stoke the fears of the “suburban housewife” voter who is already concerned by the thought of a Black woman VP, and will be even more disturbed by the thought of another Black cabinet member.

What it is also true is that Biden has promised to reinstate the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) mandate, which was instated as part of the 1968 Fair Housing Act, and required federal agencies and federal grantees to actively address and work to eliminate housing discrimination and segregation. In 2015, that rule was modified under the Obama Administration to require that localities analyze housing discrimination and segregation in their areas, and come up with plans to tackle the findings. Early this year, current HUD Secretary Ben Carson suspended the 2015 rule indefinitely

Andrew Bates, Director of Rapid Response for the Biden Campaign, suggested Trump’s decision to restate the point about low-income housing in suburban neighborhoods (he tweeted almost the exact same thing last month) is an act of desperation. “Donald Trump’s presidency is melting down after his failed, divisive, erratic leadership has cost over 160,000 American lives, tens of millions of jobs, and left the United States the hardest-hit country in the world by COVID-19.” Bates continued, “As he struggles in vain attempts to tear the American people apart and distract the country from his devastating mismanagement with clumsy, bigoted lies, he’s only further discrediting himself — and proving that he’s dumbfounded after Joe Biden’s selection of a strong running mate who he himself said not two weeks ago would be a ‘fine choice.'”

Cory Booker also commented on Trump’s tweet, telling the commander in chief to put some respect on his name — it’s Cory, no “e” — and reel his racism in just a smidge.

Donaled, your racism is showing.-Cory https://t.co/jrHIoqJ8A2

The Original Creators Have Left Netflix’s

https://www.themarysue.com/mike-dimartino-bryan-konietzko-exit-atla-netflix-series/

When news broke that there would be an Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series coming from Netflix, the reaction from many fans was a mixture of excitement and anxiety. We have all lived through the collective monstrosity that was the live-action movie The Last Airbender, so we know exactly how bad it can get. Now word comes from show co-creator Michael DiMartino that he and Bryan Konietzko have separated from the Netflix project.

In a post titled “An open letter to Avatar: The Last Airbender fans,” DiMartino explains the lack of updates about the project and breaks the tragic news.

“Many of you have been asking me for updates about the Avatar live-action Netflix series,” he starts. “I can finally tell you that I am no longer involved with the project. In June of this year, after two years of development work, Bryan Konietzko and I made the difficult decision to leave the production.”

He continues: “When Bryan and I signed on to the project in 2018, we were hired as executive producers and showrunners. In a joint announcement for the series, Netflix said that it was committed to honoring our vision for this retelling and to supporting us on creating the series. And we expressed how excited we were for the opportunity to be at the helm. Unfortunately, things did not go as we had hoped.”

That does not bode well. Especially since one of the things the creators promised was “a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast” considering the Asian influences of the series, my first thought and fear was that someone felt there needed to be some famous white actors in a few places.

DiMartino doesn’t explain in explicit details what happened, but hints that “productions are challenging” and that he was doing his best to “try to be like an Air Nomad and adapt,” only to decide “to cut their losses and move on” in order to maintain some integrity does not make me in any way excited for this new series at all.

“And who knows?” DiMartino adds. “Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar has the potential to be good. It might turn out to be a show many of you end up enjoying. But what I can be certain about is that whatever version ends up on-screen, it will not be what Bryan and I had envisioned or intended to make.”

Ahh, yeah I’m not excited about any of this. Bryke—the name given to DiMartino and Konietzko’s partnership—may not be perfect, but if this show doesn’t at the very least have their involvement or some of the writers from the original, I have to say I’m not exactly excited about where this will go unless they really wow me with the cast.

Until then, I’m content to just rewatch the original series and The Legend of Korra when it drops on Netflix.
