As thousands of Black Live Matter supporters flooded Los Angeles streets over the weekend, rising artist Chika was one of the many who were arrested for protesting against the White police officer who killed George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Known for her fiery lyricism on everything from Kanye West to women’s rights, Chika and her manager Krystle Hartsfield were demonstrating against social injustices at Trader Joes at Fairfax and 3rd in Los Angeles. On Instagram, the rapper documented her time protesting and her interaction with police, which included the moment she was put in handcuffs.

“I’m in here because I watched them put their hands on my manager as she was trying to leave,” said Chika, who explained she told the officer her manager was leaving and therefore no longer actively protesting. But then the 23-year-old heard an officer say, “get her too.”

Chika, who was born to Nigerian-American parents and raised in Alabama, was handcuffed and detained for seven hours. She said she was cited for “failing to disperse;” the artist has a court date set for October.

“No one on this bus did anything wrong. Every single person in here is in here unlawfully… but I’m okay though. I’m f–king okay though,” Chika said.

She was not the only celebrity protesting this weekend. Tessa Thompson, Michael B. Jordan, Nick Cannon, Kehlani, J. Cole, Lil Yachty, Tinashe and more were advocating in support of Black Lives Matter throughout the country. At the same Los Angeles location where Chika was arrested, Insecure actor Kendrick Sampson was hit by rubber bullets from LAPD.

Things We Saw Today: What’s Your Grilled Cheese Movie?

https://www.themarysue.com/whats-your-grilled-cheese-movie/

christopher lloyd and michael j. fox

In times like these, it feels impossible to know what to do, what to say, or how to cope with the world we are living in. Last night, after watching the news for hours, many of us felt helpless and hopeless. And at a time when we want more than anything to be close to our friends and family, COVID-19 is keeping us apart.

I’m a firm believer in pop culture therapy. And after the week we’ve all had, it’s time to break out our respective grilled cheese movies. Allow me to explain: the grilled cheese movie is a film from your childhood that, when watching it, gives you the comfort, coziness, and satisfaction of a grilled cheese sandwich (or PB&J. Or whatever vegans and lactose-intolerant folks find soothing.)

We’re talking about cinematic comfort food here, friends. Last night, at a complete loss, I turned on Back to the Future Part III. And that ridiculous movie was everything my soul needed. It’s been years since I revisited the film, but each beat felt familiar, each joke landed, and each emotional moment was deeply felt. It made me feel a little bit better in this raging hellscape of a world.

A grilled cheese sandwich movie should be something from your childhood that, while it may not hold up, is enjoyable nonetheless. Sometimes comfort comes via hoverboard or flying time-traveling train.

What are your grilled cheese movies?

The Grindhouse@BTalk100-(Inter)National Protests; Hill Harper’s Faux Pas?; JSA Movie: MAGA Loves Black People! (Uh Oh)

http://www.afronerd.com/2020/05/the-grindhousebtalk100-international.html

Hundalasiliah! Let's try to keep an upbeat demeanor in spite of (inter)national protests and a global pandemic, shall we?  Welcome to another installment of Afronerd Radio's The Grindhouse broadcast airing this Sunday at 6pm eastern.  Your Ultimate AFROnerdist hosts will be discussing the following topics:  the obvious elephant in the room, the unprecedented national and now global protests following the recorded killing of black Minneapolis native, George Floyd-including property damage, arrest of CNN reporters, physical attacks and even the appearance of a low budget Hawkeye...wow;  Oh and President Trump avows that MAGA really loves "the black people"; noted actor, Hill Harper got into twitter trouble due to his mistaken "misgendering" of Dwyane Wade's trans child, Zaya;  and in softer, kinder blerd news, Warner Bros. will purportedly develop a Justice Society of America (JSA) movie, if Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Black Adam fares well at the box office (in that edifice called a theater?); Comic Book Resources is reporting that movie companies might be exploring screenings of their films bu using video games as a conduit-is it a stroke of genius or strange?; oh and Henry Cavill is returning to the Superman character but its debatable if there will be a Man of Steel 2, however; and so Nubia, Wonder Woman's sister (of color) finally gets her close up via an upcoming comic slated for a February '21 release;  Trump signs and executive order threatening media companies' liability protections perhaps spurred by his recent problems with his inaccurate statements (ahem...lies)  on Twitter; And lastly, COVID-19 plus one American farm equals a disaster.  Call LIVE at 508-645-0100.

Far Sector #6 Preview

https://blacknerdproblems.com/far-sector-6-preview/

Tensions in The City Enduring are high as the Emotion Exploit – the mandatory genetic tech that strips citizens of their emotions in the name of peace – is up for referendum. But Jo’s attentions are divided when Councilor Marth makes a surprising and distinctly emotional overture…

Comics have been put on pause like so many other things as a result of COVID-19, but they’re slowly coming back. Far Sector allows us to escape by transporting ourselves across the galaxy to kick it with one of DC’s illest new heroes.

Because it’s been a while since we’ve seen Green Lantern Jo Mullein, DC sent over a preview of issue six before it hits comic shelves on June 2nd. Peep the pages below and support your local comic shop when the issue drops!
