So I just prepped you AfroNerd Followers with a year old blog and a “where are they now” feature on the 2017 Mae Young Classic competitors. So what about this year’s edition? My analysis begins now with the help of Lzzy Hale & Halestorm!

First up my “What Were You Expecting” class of athletes: Aerial Monroe, Jessie Elaban, Jinny, Kacy Catanzaro, Lacey Lane, MJ Jenkins, Priscilla Kelly, Xia Brookside, Vanessa Krave, Zatara & Killer Kelly were either new to me or I didn’t see much of them before this event. A cool crop of ladies determined to set the wrestling world on fire. For obvious reasons, Catanzaro and Lane were being pushed hard by the WWE PR machine but do not sleep on Monroe and Jinny. Jinny is already a part of the WWE NXT UK brand as a model with a mean streak. Monroe, the significant other of Cedric Alexander, literally moves FASTER than him in the ring and is already modifying his moves.
In my “Love/Hate Heartbreak” class where I have pros that I have seen elsewhere come to the WWE and show the Universe a thing or two: Allysin Kay, Ashley Rayne, Deonna Purrazzo, Hiroyo Matsumoto, Isla Dawn, Kaitlyn, Karen Q, Nicole Matthews & Zeuxis. Now these are ladies that have made a name for themselves elsewhere and got to rock a WWE ring here. Loved seeing Kay and Rayne “Knockout” fans who never saw them go nuts at Impact. Karen Q is the Women of Honor Women’s Champion at last check and she definitely lives up to her hype. Folks, I cannot stress enough to check out Hiroyo Matsumoto aka Godzilla clips on YouTube. She, like previous year MYC alternates Purrazzo & Matthews, more than impressed here. And Kaitlyn returned to a WWE ring! The way she left the company before had me broken I’ll admit BUT I’m glad she has rebounded and gotten BETTER!!
In my “Bet U Wish U Had Me Back” class, I have Rachel Evers, Reina González, Taynara Conti Xia Li, Kavita Devi, Tegan Nox, Mercedes Martinez & Mia Yim. Most of these lasses were here last year (only Tegan didn’t get to wrestle because of injury) and returned this year and definitely left their mark on the competition. Most notable was the legend Mercedes Martinez taking on Meiko Satomura in the match of the tournament. They put on a never say die clinic that will be remembered for YEARS! Nox was unfortunately hurt again in her quarterfinals match with Rhea Ripley but valiantly continued on. Then there’s Mia Yim, who has been so impressive to the Full Sail crowd, that their chanting “Please Sign Mia” after her quarterfinal with Toni Storm, got Triple H to sign her to NXT immediately.
This left my “I Am The Fire” final four of Io Shirai vs Rhea Ripley & Meiko Satomura vs Toni Storm. Io Shirai has long been considered the best Women’s wrestler in the world. She decided to sign with WWE during the company’s last tour of Japan. And this tourney was her welcoming party. Ripley, totally adorable in last year’s mYC, underwent a total character change and has become a total badass. And boy did they go at one another, with Shirai narrowingly escaping with the win. Following that, Toni Storm took on Satomura for that final spot in the finals and I will say it isn’t hyperbole to say Satomura stole this tournament from everyone else. Move after move, counter after counter, Satomura and Storm WOWED the crowd in the arena. Somehow, Storm pulled this out setting up the Mae Young Classic title match at the next thing I’m reviewing, EVOLUTION!

Full Disclosure: I heard the Evolution PPV as background noise as I worked and then actually watched it in bits throughout the week until now. Action took place in Long Island NY, which was totally planned because the NY/NJ wrestling fan are very tolerant when it comes to Women’s Wrestling. Don’t get it twisted: WWE made sure that they would have a pro crowd for the ladies. And if they were unsure, the first match booked ensured that as Trish Stratus & Lita faced Alicia Fox & Mickie James w/Alexa Bliss. Trish and Lita are BELOVED by a majority of the WWE Universe. Throw in another fan favorite in Mickie James with the “Bad Gal folks love” at ringside to stir things up and you couldn’t ask for a hotter start.
We then went to the Battle Royal which had today’s stars like Nia Jax, Ember Moon, The IIconics etc facing off with stars of the past like Molly Holly, Alundra Blayze, Kelly Kelly etc. for a future title shot. 20 female wrestlers in all. Seemingly, each favorite wrestler got a “moment” and this battle royal was more enjoyable than I thought it would be.
From there we had the 2018 Mae Young Classic FinalsToni Storm vs Io Shirai. The 2nd best match of the night in my opinion as both gals just let it go for 10 frenetic minutes. This one I will spoil as Toni Storm came out on top. Sorry but knowing the ending will not damper any of the fun. Trust me.
A Six Women Tag Team Match was next as Natalya, Sasha Banks, & Bayley (Banks and Bayley I can argue heralded the mainstream Women’s Revolution with their NXT Women’s Title match at the initial NXT Brooklyn Takeover event) faced The Riott Squad who are Ruby Riott, Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan. Another match that was much better than I thought going in, as all the ladies stepped up their game to try and steal the show.
No time for me to breathe as the NXT Women’s Title Match was next. Shayna Baszler vs Champion Kairi Sane. And one thing that NXT has established is the emnity between these two ladies. One’s a bully, the other is a pirate. One is no frills while the other is high flying. Two different worlds clashed and heralded a new era…for the Four Horsewomen have now arrived in the mainstream WWE *omnious evil laughter*
Next up was my match of the night for the Smackdown Women’s Title. The rule is simple: You can only win when you beat down your opponent so bad that they cannot stand back up by a count of 10. Last. Woman. Standing. In one corner, Champion Becky Lynch. In the other corner, Charlotte Flair. The intensity and hate was paltable as Becky has thrown a longtime friendship out the door to get and hold onto the gold. Ladders, tables, chairs, cheap shots all came into play as both women pulled out ALL STOPS to win. My ECW heart is still beating fast at this one. Pure. Athletic. Ruthlessness!
The night ended with the RAW Women’s Title Match as Champion Ronda Rousey faced Nikki Bella w/sister Brie in her corner. Not often that I can say that the “main” title match had the unfortunate luck to end the show but this match was good. However, when compared to the tour de force that was Lynch/Flair? There was no hope for this to top that. Rousey is still growing into this new role and is getting better while the crowd has a love/hate thing with The Bellas. This certainly didn’t drop the ball. In fact I do this an injustice by saying that. I was entertained by every match on the card. This I have only been feeling with the aforementioned NXT Takeover shows to be 100% honest.
There you go. The Women’s Revolution is now full blast at WWE and the ladies knocked this out of the park! Who knows how many folks the Mae Young Classic and Evolution inspired and entertained here? Gone are the days of the ladies considered being just T & A or the bathroom break. Disregard these fantastic athletes at your own peril!

Thanks For Reading AfroNerd Followers! As you can see, I do take my wrestling very seriously like my other geeky loves. And hopefully my recap helps those of you who haven’t before to give these gals a chance to entertain you. Until Next Time, Keep Fantasizing!

Want a PG-13 ‘Deadpool 2’ for Christmas?

https://blackgirlnerds.com/want-a-pg-13-deadpool-ii-for-christmas/

If you missed out on Deadpool 2, fear not, because Fox is releasing a revamped version. It’s been edited to meet the PG-13 guidelines for violence and language according to Deadline. The Deadpool franchise is notoriously known for the violence, extremely crude language, and sexual references. These traits are in both the films and the comics. However, such content does not meet the standards for a PG-13 film — one that teens can watch without parental supervision. Fox is releasing this film in the hopes of reaching a younger audience. But, that’s not all.

The revamped film will be called Once Upon a Deadpool and is set to release on December 12th, just in time for the holidays. Because it is a limited release, the film will conclude on Christmas Eve. This allows for young teens to watch the film during their holiday break. Once Upon a DeadPool will contain both edited and new footage. In the true spirit of the season of giving, a dollar for every ticket sold will be donated to the F-ck Cancer Foundation. Since Once Upon a Deadpool is a PG-13 film, the charity F-ck Cancer will be temporarily renamed  “Fudge” Cancer for the purposes of the campaign.

The initial release of Deadpool was a huge risk because of the R-rated rating. Most superhero films are rated PG-13, but Ryan Reynolds and Fox had faith that an R-rated superhero film such as Deadpool could succeed. Lucky enough, both films were extremely successful in the Box Office. Deadpool’s box office worldwide-gross was $783 million and Deadpool 2’s box office worldwide-gross was $734 million.

The idea to create PG-13 version of Deadpool was always one that the creators wanted to pursue. Initially, Ryan Reynolds was not up to it. Reynolds told deadline, “I’ve said no since 2006. Now, this one time, I said ‘Yes’ on two conditions. First, a portion of the proceeds had to go to charity. Second, I wanted to kidnap Fred Savage. The second condition took some explaining…”

It looks like one new seen we can expect to see is a spoof of The Princess Bride. We also know that the runtime for the film is three minutes shorter than Deadpool 2. Fox has not released any other information regarding the length of the new footage. There is also a new scene that Reynolds reshot recently. It was something he and Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Warnick came up with to include in the new version.

Do you think this Deadpool venture will work? Let us know in the comments.

Influencers Help Change the World’s View of Haiti

https://www.blackenterprise.com/women-influencers-perception-haiti/

Wanda Tima didn’t feel proud of her Haitian heritage as a child. “I grew up always hearing nothing but bad things about Haiti,” she told Black Enterprise. Born to Haitian parents in Turks and Caicos, the 35-year-old entrepreneur moved to a community in South Florida in the early 90’s where Haitians were stigmatized. “Kids were being told that Haitians eat cats and all Haitians have AIDs,” she said. In addition to the taunts and scorn, Haitian students were subjected to physical bullying and violence. “I watched Haitians get beat up on the school bus and there would be a lot of gang-related fights all the time with Haitians versus Jamaicans [and] Haitians versus everybody [else]. It was so uncool to be Haitian.”

Finding Her Roots

Wanda Tima

It took years before Tima fully embraced her lineage, which was triggered when she had an identity crisis as a young adult. At the time, she felt disconnected from her Haitian peers and detached from the culture at large. “You have a generation of kids, like myself, [who] were only Haitian by name,” she said. “My mom wasn’t speaking Creole to us at home and we weren’t listening to Haitian music. There wasn’t any Haitian culture in my house.” As a result, “I never really understood where I fit in.”

It wasn’t until she graduated from Bethune-Cookman University, an HBCU in Daytona, Florida, that she realized she couldn’t plan for her future without first connecting with her roots.

“There was a missing piece that I didn’t have any information on,” she said. “I was going through a phase of trying to learn more about Haiti and the culture.”

Her parents, however, discouraged her from exploring her ethnic background or visiting Haiti, so she started researching the country on the web, which led her down a rabbit hole of depressing news about the Caribbean nation. Rather than becoming discouraged, Tima became determined to change the narrative. In 2011, she created L’union Suite, a digital platform that highlights positive news about Haiti and Haitians around the diaspora. Today, it’s one of the most popular websites for Haitian-American lifestyle, tourism, culture, and entertainment news, reaching tens of thousands of readers on a monthly basis, plus millions more on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

To further empower people of Haitian descent, Tima launched a business directory called Haitian Professionals in 2015, that helps entrepreneurs gain business and exposure. In addition, she works closely with Karen Civil, a Haitian-American influencer and marketing strategist, to hosts charity events and raise money to support different projects in Haiti like a computer lab in a school in Cap-Haitian, Haiti’s second largest city.

The Beauty of Haiti

In October, Tima celebrated the seven-year anniversary of L’union Suite by inviting a group of U.S.-based millennial women entrepreneurs, artists, influencers, and members of the press to Cap-Haitien. The goal was to expose the world to the beauty that lies beyond the protests, violence, and natural disasters that are frequently reported through American news outlets. Despite the negative depictions of the nation, “Haiti is no different than most other Caribbean countries,” said Tima. “Yes, there’s poverty; yes, there’s a lot of help that’s needed; yes, the government has a lot of issues; but, at the same time…there are beautiful parts of the country.”

During the trip, the women shared their experience with their massive collection of Instagram followers. The four-day trip included a visit to a local school and a tour of the Sans-Souci Palace, an ancient royal ruin built in 1813, that was named after Jean-Baptiste Sans Souci, an African-born slave who helped lead the Haitian Revolution. The women also spent a day on Amiga Island, a stunning beach destination in Labadee, where local fishermen caught and grilled red snapper, crabs, and a Creole conch dish known as lambi. They also dined at popular Haitian restaurants like Lakay and Lolo and stayed at the luxurious Satama Hotel, which sits at the top of a mountain overlooking Northern Haiti.

Dawn Richard, an independent recording artist formerly signed to Bad Boy Records, was in the middle of a tour with her singing group, Danity Kane, when she received Tima’s invite to travel to Haiti. Honored by the invitation, the New Orleans native immediately cleared her schedule. “I am overwhelmed and very grateful that I had the opportunity to see my roots first hand,” the Haitian American singer told BE. “Not only am I able to see Haiti through my own eyes…but I get to do it with other women who look like me.”

Likewise, Steph Lecor, a recording artist signed to DJ Khaled’s We The Best Music Group, was delighted to return to Haiti. “I used to come every summer up until I was 12 years old,” said the first-generation Haitian-American singer. “Those were the best summers of my life.” She continued, “When Wanda called me two days before the trip, I jumped on the opportunity to be here,” she said, adding, “as soon as I got here…it felt like home.”

While appreciative of Haiti’s allure, Lecor is not remiss of what many people think of Haiti, including President Donald Trump who notoriously described it as an “s–thole” country. “The perception is that Haiti is unsafe, dirty, and dangerous,” she said, admitting that it’s hard to drive through the impoverished neighborhoods. As a result, the landscape, culture, and people are overlooked.

Azia Toussaint, a star on BET’s “Hustle in Brooklyn,” had dreamed of visiting Haiti, the country where her father was born, as a little girl. However, she said seeing the poverty and devastation juxtaposed to the scenic landscape was “bittersweet.” “Even [though] the places have gone through so much destruction and hardship, it’s [still] a beautiful place,” she said. She added that Haitians have not lost the grit needed to survive. “I saw a bunch of people who still had pride, still had hope, and the strength, courage, and the willingness to move forward.”

After returning to her home in Sunrise, Florida, Tima said the trip was “beyond successful.” In addition to a great experience, the women networked and connected with each other as well as with locals all while shining a positive light on Haiti through social platforms. L’union Suite’s “social media impressions during the trip were record-breaking,” said Tima, “and now more and more people know about the work we are doing in Haiti and want to not only vacation [here] but [also] assist in giving back at the school.”

Furthermore, the trip reaffirmed Tima’s commitment to uplift Haiti and spotlight its beauty and strength. “I come from a lineage of people who are leaders and unapologetically strong. I am the daughter of the first Black republic. We are such truly a group of resilient people,” she said. “The more I learn about my history and our contributions to the world, the more I fall in love with who I am.”

Things We Saw Today: Janet Jackson Receives Awards, but Also Deserves Apologies

https://www.themarysue.com/things-we-saw-today-janet-jackson/

Since it was revealed that Janet Jackson’s career was purposefully hindered by the influence of the now-disgraced CBS chairman Leslie Moonves, one of music’s greatest living female icons has been getting the awards she so rightfully deserves. Last night at the MTV EMAs, Jackson was presented with The Global Icon Award in Bilbao, Spain. The award recognized, says MTV, that “her incredible artistry has opened doors for countless others while leaving an indelible impact on pop culture.”

At the ceremony, Jackson delivered a fantastic speech.

“To be called an icon is a tremendous honor, but one that comes with a tremendous responsibility,” Jackson said, according to The Washington Post. “Tonight, I feel moved to speak for women’s voices who have been stifled. I am one of those women. Women who have been gagged, both literally and emotionally. Women who have been abused. Women who have been intimidated. Women who have lived in fear. I stand with you. You are my sisters.”

This is great, and while I am elated that people are collectively standing behind Ms. Jackson, it doesn’t erase the fact that her career was purposefully stalled by a man who felt she didn’t properly grovel to him. Leslie Moonves is the one who should be apologizing now.
