Christmas morning, Lily wakes up and rushes to the Christmas tree excited, but her family isn’t there and neither is the notebook. Langston wishes her a merry Christmas and asks her about the party, which she walks away from. She sees her red boot and rushes to Lillian’s in hopes that she has the notebook. Lillian hasn’t seen Dash since he brought the boot, and she notices that Lily is wearing the pair. She is hoping that Lily is prepared to deal with the real version of notebook guy and not who she thinks he is.

The caroling group invites Lily to McSorley’s. Lily asks what Lillian will do when the notebook comes, which Lillian responds with, “I’ll dash it right over, no pun intended.” Lily questions the pun, but Lillian covers it up. As she walks to McSorley’s, Lily thinks over the pun, figures out Dash’s name, then remembers that she met Dash the night before. As well as Sophia. Girl.

Dash & Lily

Lily video calls Boomer, explains how she got his number, then questions him about where his friend was the night before and spills that Dash left with Sophia. Boomer tried to avoid telling her at first but then tells her she isn’t wrong. Lily, upset, blurts the dilemma to her caroling group, and they reply by giving her drinks to try. Only one is opposed to underage drinking. Drunk Lily is urged to text Edgar about how she feels, which she does. Edgar shows up but to drunk Lily he seems like Dash at first. Edgar pulls out some mistletoe after explaining why he didn’t kiss her, then he kisses her. While they are lip locking, Dash enters with the notebook in hand and sees Lily and Edgar. He looks hurt as he calls her name. She is surprised to see him. Girl, me too.

Rewind to the night before when Dash is making out with Sophia at the museum. He stops kissing her, stating that it doesn’t feel right because he is thinking of Lily. Sophia and Dash talk about how neither of them wants to start up again and conclude that they are done. Sophia suggests that they sleep at the museum as friends. Dash wakes up to rush the notebook to Lillian’s, while Sophia gets ready to rush home. Her last advice to him is to give Lily more than a notebook.

Dash & Lily

Dash receives a notification from the mommy app with information about a lost red boot that was seen at McSorley’s. HE IS CARRYING THE OTHER BOOT. This is tew much. He runs to McSorley’s but stops to buy two tickets to see Collation that night. As he gets the tickets, he rambles about the coincidence and the magic of Christmas, hugs Santa, claims he believes, but is crushed when he arrives to see Lily.

He’s heartbroken that Lily is with Edgar. Lily points out that Dash was probably kissing Sophia then states she doesn’t feel well. Edgar states he will take her home, but she can’t go home wasted. She looks for her coat. Dash insists that he will take her. When she leaves, Edgar hits on another girl.

Dash & Lily

Dash has the audacity to question Lily’s choice in men when she responds that Edgar is easy to be with and calls out Dash for lying, points out that he is wearing the same clothes from the night before. Dash informs Lily that he and Sophia broke up a year ago, and they just affirmed their lack of relationship. Lily questions him on why he didn’t inform her in the notebook as well as that Edgar isn’t with her nor did the kiss mean anything. Dash accuses her of just kissing random guys, but Lily points out that it was her first kiss that she wanted with him, but he wasn’t there nor did he bring the notebook when he said he would. He states that she could have waited, but she says she has been going through a lot and they both have been keeping secrets. Lily also informs Dash that the whole notebook idea was her brother’s and wishes that she had never done it. This argument is filled with all the wrong things to say.

Lily lets out the secret that Boomer knew about her. Bruh. She informs Dash that Boomer said he would be nicer. Dash pulls out a pen and writes in the notebook. As he drops Lily off at Lillian’s, he leaves the other boot as Lillian tries to salvage the relationship. Dash isn’t interested in continuing with the game. Lily tries to hide that she was drinking, when her grandpa arrives. He gets upset with his sister for letting Lily get drunk. When they arrive home, Lily is surprised that her parents, brother, and extended family members are around the Christmas tree. She vomits into her boot. Nasty.

An upset Dash goes to Boomer’s to drop off his present. Dash unleashes his anger on Boomer for not telling him everything. Boomer reminds Dash that he did it for Dash and always has his back. He invites Dash to join his family, but he rejects Boomer’s offer. Mean Dash has returned. Lily’s parents check up on an upset Lily. They tell her that Langston came up with the idea for them to come back; her dad got the job offer and they would need to move by next week. Lily lets out a scream and exclaims that this is all too soon, but this job is a great opportunity. Lily’s mom suggests that Lily join the family for their last gathering as well as points out that they will talk the next day about her hangover.

Lily finally notices the notebook and reads Dash’s last surly words about how they set themselves up and says goodbye. Dash struggles alone at home but then decides to go to watch Coalition. The last few words of narration show the two are not happy in either of their Christmas festivities.

This episode has me stressed for the both of them. I saw the heartache coming, but I just couldn’t stop hoping they would work it out. With one episode left, I hope for a bit of relief. Boomer also deserves better than what Dash dishes out. He is more than just a supportive friend, but Dash can’t see that so neither will we.

Ask the Mary Sues: What Pop Culture Are You Thankful for in 2020?

https://www.themarysue.com/ask-the-mary-sues-pop-culture-were-thankful-for-in-2020/

Ted Lasso holds a cup of tea.

After only 5,693 months, the hellmouth that is the year 2020 is FINALLY coming to close. With only 42 days left in this cursed year, we’re all white-knuckling it through the holidays together. And once 2021 begins, we need only wait 20 days for Joe Biden’s inauguration and for Trump to GTFO of our lives forever. Oh what a glorious day that will be.

With 2020 soon in our rearview, we wanted to take a look at the pop culture that distracted us from the dumpster fire of this year. Whether it was movies, television, gaming, or wine, we all sought solace in our favorite pop culture pockets of joy. And it’s in hard times like these that entertainment becomes more than diverting. It can be therapeutic, as well. Here’s some of the content that kept us going in this relentless year.

Briana Lawrence:

I’m going to say #Blacktober and the daily dose of joyful Black art I got all through the month of October. It was the perfect burst of happiness that, thankfully, leaked into November during peak times of stress.

Chelsea Steiner:

As someone entirely uninterested in sports, I began Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso with zero expectations. To my surprise, the Bill Lawrence series offered up a delightful feel-good comedy that never punched down and always erred on the side of kindness. This is chiefly displayed in Jason Sudeikis’s irrepressibly optimistic title character, a man who is the perfect combination of old school gent and woke cheerleader.

Lasso’s relentless good humor and loving support are traits we (sadly) rarely see in male protagonists, which makes this Apple TV+ series all the more refreshing. In a pop culture world filled with bitter anti-heroes, we could all use more men like Coach Lasso. Luckily for us, Apple has already renewed the series for a 2nd and 3rd season.

Jessica Mason:

In this chaotic and generally terrible year, I’ve been most thankful for the shows and movies that brought me into Geekdom and Fandom, and aside from Supernatural, which I’ve covered a lot this week, the one that brought me the most hope was The Lord of the Rings. It means so much to have a story about the triumph of good over the shadows, where the smallest people can make a difference and be heroes.

Every day leading up to the election, I whispered Samwise’s speech from The Two Towers to myself, because we always need to remember that no matter what, there’s some good in this world. And it’s worth fighting for.

Rachel Leishman:

A great distraction for me throughout quarantine has been Lucifer. Discovering the show late in the game, I got to watch the entire run through season 5A and became addicted to it. Watching the Devil learn how to live among the world of man and grow as a character was shockingly fascinating to me. I really enjoyed how he took his own personal growth seriously, which was something you don’t often see when people talk about Satan, and I loved watching every second of it.

Vivian Kane:

I would guess that, by this point, I’ve seen every Bob’s Burgers episode (save for the latest season) at least 20 times each. All year, it’s been the show I fall asleep to because there’s something about the sound of H. Jon Benjamin yelling that I find really soothing, especially in 2020. It’s so smart that even now, I find myself catching jokes that slipped through the cracks and at its core, it’s just a really honest depiction of a family that has its issues and its difficulties, but that really loves each other and is just doing their best.

Princess Weekes:

Animal Crossing came at the right time for a lot of us. It may seem clichéd, since everyone was obsessed with it, but getting to build my island and spending the very start of COVID-19 there was a distraction that was more powerful than even Netflix. Being able to interact and build a community with people, visit friends, and even host events while stuck indoors was important. I couldn’t have gotten through those first few months without it.

Dan Van Winkle:

Shrill, Hulu’s TV series adaptation of Lindy West’s memoir, will always be the little bright spot I remember about this year before everything went to hell. As is frequently the case in January, I had nothing to watch, and I happened to check out the series on a whim after remembering it from the work of some of our writers, as its second season made its debut. They did not steer me wrong. The show manages the ever-delicate balancing act between hilarious and heartfelt with aplomb, tackling a lot of meaningful subject matter in the process, and my only complaint is that its seasons are too short.

Season 4 Marks The End for ‘Black Lightning’

https://blackgirlnerds.com/season-4-marks-the-end-for-black-lightning/

Black Lightning will meet its end come season four CW confirmed today.

The move follows the network’s announcement last week that it is planning a spinoff of the series titled Painkiller, with Jordan Calloway reprising his role as the titular character. The episode will air during the upcoming final season of Black Lightning. Painkiller is written, directed and executive produced by Salim Akil, who also has been the driving creative force behind Black Lightning as executive producer/showrunner Deadline reports.

“When we first started the Black Lighting journey, I knew that Jefferson Pierce and his family of powerful Black women would be a unique addition to the superhero genre,” Akil stated.

“Thank you to the phenomenal cast, writers and crew without whom none of this would’ve been possible. I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve been able to do and the moments we’ve been able to create in bringing DC’s first African-American family of superheroes to life for the culture. I’m very grateful to Peter Roth, Warner Bros. TV, Mark Pedowitz, The CW Network and Greg Berlanti for their partnership and support of my vision at every step of this journey. While Season Four may be the end of one journey, I’m extremely excited to usher in a new chapter and continued collaboration with The CW as we tell the story of Painkiller.”

The series was launched in 2017 and has won Black Reel Awards for Television for Outstanding Drama Series in 2018 and has 16 nominations. Although this does mark the end for Black Lightning, it is not the end of Black superheroes in film and TV. This may come as a surprise to our readers, but another electric Black hero is going to get his own movie, Static Shock this time with Michael B. Jordan. Not only is DC embracing Black heroes, but Marvel is also slated to release Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 in 2022.

While our ability to console you for the loss of Black Lightning is limited, we can tell you what lies in the future. We will most definitely keep our eyes open.

Voice Actor Kirby Morrow Has Passed Away at 47

https://www.themarysue.com/voice-actor-kirby-morrow-has-passed-away-at-47/

Kirby Morrow, Miroku and Cyclops

Kirby Morrow, the voice actor behind multiple English anime dubs and Captain Dave Kleinman from Stargate Atlantis, has passed away at 47.

I grew up hearing Morrow as the voice of Scott Summers (a.k.a. Cyclops) in X-Men: Evolution and as the horny priest Miroku in Inuyasha. He was also Trowa Barton in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, and the second voice of Goku in the Ocean Production dub of Dragon Ball Z. He also reprised the Miroku role in the Funimation dub of Inuyasha’s sequel series Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon.

The industry is deeply saddened by the loss of Morrow, and fans of his work have taken to the internet to remember his legacy. I hope his family feels some level of comfort at seeing how loved he was by so many people. He was so young and while there is no current cause of death listed, to lose anyone, especially during this time of the year and in a pandemic, is so horrific. Our thoughts go out to Morrow’s family and friends in this sad time.
