Trinkets is returning for its second and final season, which is released globally August 25 on Netflix. This is a non-spoiler review for the second season, but it will feature plot points from the first season so beware if you are yet to check out the show. The synopsis for Trinkets is below:

When three teenage girls find themselves in the same mandated Shoplifters Anonymous meeting, an unlikely friendship forms between grieving misfit Elodie (Brianna Hildebrand), mysterious outsider Moe (Kiana Madeira), and Tabitha (Quintessa Swindell), an imperfect picture of perfection.  They will find strength in each other as they negotiate the complicated dilemma of trying to fit in while longing to break out.

Trinkets is based on the young adult novel by screenwriter Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith (Legally Blonde, 10 Things I Hate About You, She’s the Man) who serves as creator and executive producer. Amy Andelson and Emily Meyer (Step Up 3D) are also co-creators. Sarah Goldfinger (Charmed, Almost Human) is the showrunner.

The first season of Trinkets left the three leads in some trouble. Elodie’s dad found out about her shoplifting and ordered her to go to rehab, so she runs away from home. Moe has started to like the shoplifting life after initially lying about stealing. Tabitha is trying to move on from Brady after sinking his car in a lake.

There are some notable new additions to the cast for the second season. Nik Dodani (Atypical) plays Chase, a science geek who acts as a rival for Moe. Andrew Jacobs (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones) is Moe’s brother Ben, who returns from military school. Chloë Levine (The OA) plays Jillian, a friend Elodie makes in band. All three play a large role in the season.

As with season one, it’s the three lead actors that really make the show. Brianna Hildebrand (Deadpool), Kiana Madeira (Dark Matter) and Quintessa Swindell (Euphoria) are believable in their friendship and can also carry the show when scenes revolve solely on them as individuals. The characters all grow during the second season and come to terms with a lot of their issues. This gives the show more depth, as a viewer you feel like you’ve lived that journey with them.

Season one was mixed, having high points but also some average teen drama. Season two carries on much in the same vein. The format of Trinkets, ten thirty-minute episodes, limits the writers in how much they can explore the themes of the show. For example, there is a point in the second season when Tabitha owns her identity as a black woman. But it only takes up five minutes of screen time, which just isn’t enough. Trinkets is ambitious in the number of storylines it tries to fit in, sometimes to its detriment but the fact they tried to do so much in a limited run deserves respect.

Longer episodes would have made the plot development a little smoother throughout the series. Some of the plot points are a little ridiculous but if you go with it, the show is pretty fun. It does try to deal with deep emotions and does better than a lot of the young adult movies and TV out there.

In trying to create a signature style for Trinkets, the creators have gone a little heavy with the needle drops and the slow-motion shots. It’s not a bad look but it is overdone, especially in a show with a short runtime.

Trinkets is not unmissable television but deserves to have made more of an impact than the first season did. Netflix didn’t push Trinkets hard despite it being the type of show that gets traction on social media. It’s nice that they got a second season to wrap things up and complete the storylines of the main characters. I’d recommend the show, it’s fast paced and entertaining. Trinkets isn’t perfect by any stretch but it’s an ambitious show with good characters. Worth checking out.

Things We Saw Today: Here Is a Picture of Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves With a Dog Just for the Good Vibes

Bill and Ted in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Sometimes you have to put your faith in a loud guitar … or in pictures of Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves on the set of Bill & Ted Face the Music. The iconic stars are gearing up for the long-awaited installment to the Bill & Ted trilogy and, in preparation, screenwriter Ed Solomon shared pictures of Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter taking pictures with people in the crew in front of the famous telephone booth.

But, don’t worry, there is one picture in particular that will spark such joy, you might just print it out and put it in a frame.

Better yet, the dog’s name is Popcorn.

To be completely transparent, I might have cried when I saw this picture because it does bring me such joy. It’s just … pure happiness in the form of a picture, something that I almost forgot about. Sometimes, a picture can bring a smile to your face and a sense of peace to your day and that’s what this did.

And right now, I feel like that’s what we need. Just a bit of happiness at seeing William “Bill” S. Preston Esquire and Theodore “Ted” Logan posing with a puppy outside of their time-traveling phonebooth. Who could ask for anything more?

  • Ahead of the RNC, the GOP is … aligning itself with white supremacists. (via The Daily Dot)
  • Trump’s own sister is telling us we cannot trust him. (via CBS News)
  • Over 50% of Republicans are literally that dog in the fire saying “this is fine” about EVERYTHING happening. (via NY Daily News)

The Grindhouse Airs This SUN @BTalk 100, 6pm EST-Topix? DC Fandome; Black Batman? Troubles at CBS’ All Rise; Nichelle Nichols; Music Bundling & More; Call Live #508-645-0100

http://www.afronerd.com/2020/08/the-grindhouse-airs-this-sun-btalk-100.html

Just like James Bond's martini, this week's Afronerd Radio Grindhouse topics will be simple-"shaken, not stirred."  Welcome to our umpteenth episode-airing this Sunday at 6pm eastern, courtesy of BTalk 100.  Join your eveready hosts as they wax about the following topics:  well the first part of DC's answer to SDCC @Home commenced with a bang at their own website-DCfandome.com and we will discuss the revelations, trailers, star power etc (a lot of Batman, eh Daryll?);

it appears that music bundling is the new payola in an ever dying music business model;  German scientists conduct a concert attendance experiment under COVID-19 conditions; legendary actress and perhaps the "Goddess" of afrofuturism, Nichelle Nichols maybe a victim of elder abuse (in much the same way the late Stan Lee had pilferers);  oh and DC head honcho, Jim Lee confirmed that there really will be a black Batman in '21, thanks to 12 Years a Slave scribe, John Ridley;  thoughts about yet another streaming service, NBC's Peacock platform via this trailer for the BBC's Anthony (based on a real life racially motivated killing in the UK)-

Actress, Jasika Nicole (The Good Doctor) wasn't too fond of her character's name being made fun of during the entire five seasons;  did friend of the show, Sergio Mims mention this?  well we'll talk about it because it's necessary and noteworthy-the Philadelphia Orchestra announced Nicole Jordan as its principal librarian (another black first....but still): CBS All Rise writers allege there was a neverending battle to keep sexist and racist story lines from being explored on the show due to a clueless white Canadian showrunner;  and lastly, as an aside to the DC Fandome, Shazam 2 (tentatively called Fury of the Gods) panel...I really do hope, Sinbad makes an appearance in the sequel!  Call in LIVE at 508-645-0100.

"I have all the powers of Africa now.  From the fox to the elephant, from the spider to the man-I am the life of Africa--and I believe in life"-Mari McCabe (Vixen)
