This year’s Gold Sponsor lineup features a free comic for every fan imaginable
(Baltimore, MD) — (March 16, 2021) – The Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) Committee has selected the twelve Gold Sponsor comic book titles for the comic book industry’s most anticipated annual event: Free Comic Book Day. FCBD will once again be a single-day event, scheduled to take place Saturday, August 14 at local comic shops. The event, which traditionally takes place on the first Saturday in May, will be celebrated in August in 2021 in the hopes that much of the uncertainty and disruption related to COVID-19 will have passed.
The titles were curated by over twenty comic shop retailers who make up the FCBD Selection Committee. This year’s comic book lineup features something for everyone: from superheroes, to movies and video games, to beloved franchises, and all-ages favorites. The Gold Sponsor titles come from the industry’s top publishers, including Marvel Comics, Dark Horse Comics, IDW Publishing, Image Comics, Archie Comics, BOOM! Studios, Macmillan/First Second Books, Penguin Workshop, AfterShock Comics, Titan Comics, TOKYOPOP, and VIZ Media.
“This year’s lineup of titles has something for every kind of comic fan,” said Ashton Greenwood, Free Comic Book Day spokesperson. “We can’t wait to once again share the FCBD experience with fans, especially on our landmark 20th anniversary! We hope fans will safely visit their local comic shops to celebrate and to pick up a few of the great titles available this year.”
The full line-up of this year’s comic books will be released tomorrow, March 17, when thirty-nine additional FCBD Silver Sponsor titles are announced. A complete listing of all fifty-one FCBD titles can also be found in the April issue of Diamond Comic Distributors’ PREVIEWS catalog, on sale at comic book shops on March 24.

GOLDEN GLOBE® AND EMMY® NOMINEE, LENA HEADEY TO EXEC PRODUCE AND STAR IN
SPECTRUM ORIGINALS, AMC NETWORKS AND BOAT ROCKER STUDIOS’
SCI-FI THRILLER “BEACON 23”
Los Angeles, Calif. (March 17, 2021) – Renowned film and television actress Lena Headey has boarded the previously announced Spectrum Originals and AMC Networks psychological thriller BEACON 23. Headey will star in the series as, “Aster”, a woman who mysteriously finds her way to a lonely beacon keeper on his lighthouse in the darkest recesses of space. She will also executive produce the project through her production company, Peephole Productions, as part of her first-look deal with Boat Rocker Studios.
From creator Zak Penn (Ready Player One, The Avengers), this intimate, suspenseful thriller follows two people whose fates become entangled after they find themselves trapped together at the end of the known universe. A tense battle of wills unfolds at the edge of space, Halan, the beacon keeper, begins to question whether Aster is friend or foe as her ability to disguise her agenda and motives could make her a formidable opponent. Co-commissioned by Spectrum Originals and AMC Networks, co-produced by Spectrum Originals and Boat Rocker Studios, the series is based on the book of the same name by The New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Hugh Howey. After a nine-month exclusive run for Spectrum, BEACON 23 will be an AMC original with a second window across AMC Networks platforms.
“We had exactly one person in mind when thinking about who could play Aster – who could bring the strength, the vulnerability and the brilliance to Zak’s complex character? No one but Lena Headey”, said Katherine Pope, Head of Spectrum Originals. “We couldn’t be more excited to go on this thrill ride with Lena and Zak leading the way.”
“Having known and worked with Lena the past few years my admiration for her inspiring talent is unending. I’m so thrilled that Lena embraced the role of Aster and equally happy she’ll be executive producing through her production company Peephole,” said Katie O’Connell Marsh, Vice-Chair, Boat Rocker Studios.
“This is such an exciting casting. Lena is a towering giant in the business, a remarkable and multi-dimensional talent, and to have her as part of this series elevates it in every way,” said Dan McDermott, president of original programming for AMC Networks Entertainment Group and co-president of AMC Studios.
“Lena Headey was a wonderful, versatile actress before she gave one of the defining performances in television history. So, as they say, ‘no pressure.’ I’m thankful to all the people making this show possible, they just keep delivering beyond my expectations,” said Zak Penn, creator, executive producer, and showrunner.
Zak Penn serves as creator, executive producer, and showrunner, along with executive producers Ira Steven Behr (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Outlander and The 4400), Lena Headey, Tina Thor, Elisa Ellis, and Katie O’Connell Marsh (Narcos, Hannibal) for Boat Rocker Studios.

Our "grocer's fresh" topics this week are as follows: yet another horrific mass shooting has occurred in Boulder, CO and regrettably, the solutions to this peculiar U.S. phenomenon are few and far in between. We will unpack our thoughts nonetheless; Dburt mistook the trailer for Amazon's "racial horror" anthology series, Them as a Jordan Peele production, BUT it's actually under the auspices of writer, Little Marvin, and actor, Lena Waithe:
A BleedingCool.com piece highlights the failed proposal for a Jeremy Whitley (Princeless) penned Tanya Spears as Power Girl comic; HBO Max new Latinx initiative, Pa' Lante gets its close-up , but one has to ask: Why not additional focused ethnic platforms? Lastly, if time permits, perhaps we will address some issues that were left on the cutting room floor from Sunday's Grindhouse broadcast.

During a conversation with guest co-host and comedian Cocoa Brown on Shepherd’s podcast Two Funny Mamas (which she hosts with Kym Whitley), the two talked about how complicated the dating game is for them with Brown saying, “People think you always want to be funny.” And if that’s not the case, then guys they encounter want to prove that they’re funny. Both women also noted that there is a belief that women comedians, because they’re funny, aren’t as feminine.
One especially interesting tidbit though from their conversation was encountering men who either wanted them to be just like they are on stage at all times, or in contrast, wanted to change the ladies because their personalities were so big. The latter was the case for Shepherd. She met a guy at a comedy show and they dated for a year.
“It was a horrible year,” she said. “‘Cause then he kept saying, ‘Why are you so loud all the time?’ When you met me I was loud. I was on stage killing. Then he was like, ‘Why you tell all your business on stage?’ He was..aw girl. It was the worst year.”
The fact that Shepherd could easily be the center of attention even when off the stage also became a problem for her ex-boyfriend.
“He didn’t get it. He didn’t get it. Like, ‘Why did we have to, when you go in the room it’s like you’re the life of the party.’ When you met me I was on stage” she said of his issues.
The star has been married twice, to Jeff Tarpley from 2001 to 2009 with whom she shares son Jeffrey, and Lamar Sally from 2011 to 2014. She pays both men child support — Sally for a child conceived via a donor egg and surrogate during their marriage. She’s said that she picked them and accepted the “consequences of bad choices” when looking for Mr. Right, but none of that has stopped her from wanting to find love again.
“I’m single and I’m open,” she said back in 2018. “I’ve been single for about four years. I think I’m ready to put my feet into the dating pool. The water’s a little cold, but I think I’m ready. Don’t send me none of your uncles. I need people with their own teeth, their own knees. Good credit. Maybe they own their own home. You know, I got a lot of little factors, but I think I’m ready to date.”
