Netflix’s latest action-thriller isn’t just another revenge film. Cinematographer and director Anna Foerster (Westworld) makes her directorial debut with Lou — a female-driven film that packs a serious punch. 

Written by Maggie Cohn (The Staircase) and Jack Stanley, Lou follows the titular landlord (Allison Janney) as she somewhat enjoys her solitary existence on an island in the Pacific Northwest with her dog Jax. The first few minutes establish that, although she’s reasonably well-liked in town, she’s feared to some degree. Not because she puts off dangerous vibes, but more like, “Here comes that old grump.” Basically, Lou’s inability to be personable makes people uneasy, so they keep their distance. 

The enigmatic Lou rents a trailer to Hannah (Jurnee Smollett) and her daughter Vee (Ridley Asha Bateman). We’re introduced to the young single mom while she’s simultaneously doing laundry and playing with her daughter. Unlike her stoic landlord, she has a warmth to her. There’s some tension when the two women interact, mostly because Lou, like every cinematic landlord, is hounding Hannah for rent. 

During a gnarly rainstorm, Vee is taken by Hannah’s violent ex, played by the talented and underrated actor Logan Marshall-Green. She runs to Lou’s place to use the phone. Naturally, it’s out. Lou takes the lead, and they set out to find her daughter. I’ve read a few descriptions of the film that say Hannah “begs” Lou for help. But it’s more like she shows up to use a phone that doesn’t work, quickly rambles off what’s going down, and Lou decides this is her problem now, too. 

Even though she’s known for her comedic roles, Janney really knows how to play a woman hardened by her past. The character of Lou isn’t quite LaVona Golden (from I, Tonya) level, though. Janney told Entertainment Weekly that Lou is “a woman of few words,” who is “kind of a scary figure in town.” She’s definitely intimidating but has a sense of humor and is still likable. 

​​As seen in the trailer, Lou ominously burns redacted documents and old photos in her fireplace. We don’t find out what her deal is until later. It makes a little more sense once we see she’s an unexpected badass with mysterious expertise the killing. She also knows how to live off the land. Right away, she’s shown hunting and skinning animals, so if that grosses you out, I wouldn’t eat while watching the first four minutes at least. 

Lou and Hannah aren’t a likely pair. Along the way, they discover they have more in common than they thought. Lou loads up on weapons and whips out all this knowledge on tracking people on the run. As a single mother and survivor of an abusive husband, Hannah’s picked up her fair share of survival tactics too. She’s a mama bear going primal, not a damsel in distress. 

Once the storm is in full swing, the characters spend most of the film utterly rain-soaked. Their trek through the wilderness of the San Juan Islands is a rough one. Lou was filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Despite the raging storm and terrifying circumstances, the island’s scenery is stunning. Having ugly things happening in a beautiful place reminds me of the picturesque fishing town in Midnight Mass.

I don’t see it as a revenge thriller in the traditional sense. It’s more of a “rescuing a kidnapped child” thriller. In an interview with Screen Rant, Smollett said, “That was a very interesting dialogue to have about women and womanhood, and then to put that in the action genre space was just so thrilling and exciting.” She continued, “Because it’s not a message; we’re kind of forced to work together and make our way.” I also think it’s a combination of the writing and chemistry between Smollett and Janney that makes the emotional moments feel more authentic and not like action-thriller tropes. 

When it was announced back in 2018 by The Hollywood Reporter, it was described as “being a tonal mix of Thelma and Louis and Taken.” It’s a description that’s sure to get people to watch. But calling Lou a female Bryan Mills or John Wick is reductive. Thankfully, Lou doesn’t have a moment where she explicitly tells someone she has a “very particular set of skills.” 

It may not be totally action-packed but the fight scenes are exciting and very well done; particularly an epic one towards the end that I won’t spoil. Janney said that she trained with stunt choreographer and actor Daniel Bernhardt, (who you might not know by name but will recognize from films like Logan, Atomic Blonde, and as the guy who gets his legs broken by Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey). 

Anna Foerster’s Lou is a compelling thriller starring two of the most talented actresses working today who deliver the complex emotions and physicality that make their characters people we want to root for. 

Lou debuts on September 23, 2022, on Netflix.

(Sept. 11, 2022) – Today at D23 Expo 2022, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Josh D’Amaro shared a look into the future for Disney theme parks and beyond, with announcements that continue to defy expectations and inspire imagination. Highlights included the expansion of Avengers Campus at Disneyland Resort with a third attraction; a first look at the Disney Treasure, the next ship joining the Disney Cruise Line fleet; a closer look at the Frozen-themed lands coming to three park destinations around the world; and a behind-the-scenes look at the blue-sky brainstorming of Disney Imagineers.   “It’s terrific to be together in person and connect with our fans again at D23 Expo. I love sharing in the excitement with them for what we have ahead of us,” said Josh D’Amaro. “As the world’s greatest storytellers, I’m thrilled to share the new and innovative ways we are bringing next-generation Disney magic to life across Disney parks and experiences.”   As D’Amaro welcomed thousands of fans back to the ultimate Disney fan event for the first time since 2019, the audience was wowed by appearances from special guests, celebrities, never-before-seen characters and electric performances that filled Hall D23 with music and excitement.   Singer-songwriter Jordan Fisher kicked off the show with a rousing performance of the popular anthem “Happily Ever After.” Executive Producer and Disney Legend Jon Favreau joined to share a first look at the Mandalorian and Grogu before they encounter guests starting in mid-November inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland Park in Anaheim. As D’Amaro shared a closer look at the Frozen-themed areas coming to Hong Kong Disneyland, Tokyo Disney Resort and Disneyland Paris, the audience was treated to a moving rendition of the “Frozen 2” hit song “Into the Unknown” performed in Cantonese, Japanese and French.   A highlight of the morning included a look at what’s possible when Disney Imagineers and their collaborators dream big. Joining in battle with the Avengers means facing foes from anywhere and everywhen, including a new threat, King Thanos, a Multiverse variant designed specifically for Avengers Campus.   Just around the corner from Avengers Campus, Pacific Wharf will be reimagined as San Fransokyo from the Oscar-winning Disney Animation film “Big Hero 6,”complete with a place to meet Baymax as well as new spots to eat and shop.   At Disneyland park, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will invite guests into a cartoon world where toon rules apply, and Mickey’s Toontown will step into a new era of inclusive experiences for families of all ages when it opens in early 2023.   Across the way, progress continues on the reimagining of the Paradise Pier Hotel to Pixar Place Hotel, where guests will feel as though they’ve stepped into a Pixar art gallery featuring new interpretations of favorite Pixar pals. Several members of the original film cast will return to lend their voices to the attraction, including Anika Noni Rose as Tiana, Bruno Campos as Naveen, Michael-Leon Wooley as Louis and Jenifer Lewis as Mama Odie.    Walt Disney World Resort and the Transformation of EPCOT The next major milestone in EPCOT’s multi-year transformation will include the completion of the World Celebration neighborhood in late 2023. Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana will also open in late 2023, inviting guests to follow the story of water on the planet, inspired by Moana’s connection to the ocean. Fan-favorite character Figment will also appear live to park guests by the end of 2023.   Over at Magic Kingdom, TRON / Lightcycle Run will invite guests to enter the Grid in spring 2023. Imagineers have dreamed up a new design concept inspired by the theme of adventure, celebrating Walt Disney’s lifelong love of exploration. The Grand Hall — the magnificent three-deck-tall atrium that welcomes guests on board — is inspired by the grandeur and mystery of a gilded palace, drawing on real-world influences from Asia and Africa, and paying homage to the far-off land of Agrabah. At the center, the signature statue will feature Aladdin, Jasmine and their Magic Carpet.   For the first time, Disney Cruise Line is bringing the magic of a Disney vacation to families and fans in Australia and New Zealand during limited-time cruises that immerse guests in Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars stories beginning in late October 2023. Additionally, repositioning cruises for the Disney Wonder will be the first South Pacific voyages for Disney Cruise Line, giving guests the chance to experience destinations like Fiji and Samoa.   In the Bahamas, progress continues on a beautiful new island destination at Lighthouse Point, which will bring the natural beauty and rich culture of the Bahamas to life for Disney Cruise Line guests.   Three Frozen-themed Lands Highlight Expansions at Parks Around the World    Inspired by Disney Animation’s stunning films, World of Frozen will open in the second half of 2023 at Hong Kong Disneyland – the first of three Frozen-themed areas coming to international Disney parks. It will blend Arendelle with the park’s natural landscapes on Lantau Island.   At Disneyland Paris, the Frozen-themed land will be the next major milestone in the ongoing transformation of Walt Disney Studios park. This land will offer a gorgeous lakeside promenade and will immerse guests in the same magical wintry setting from the films. A new Tangled-themed family attraction will join the new gardens leading into the land. Frozen will also be part of the transformation of the Disneyland Hotel, reopening in 2024. As part of the grand finale of the 30th Anniversary celebration underway, a new stage show, “Pixar: We Belong Together,” will debut next year in Walt Disney Studios park.   At Tokyo Disney Resort, Frozen is one of the stories coming to life as part of the Fantasy Springs expansion at Tokyo DisneySea, joining two other Disney Animation stories, “Peter Pan” and “Tangled,” plus a brand-new hotel integrated right into the park. Fantasy Springs will feature several new Audio-Animatronics figures, including Elsa, who sings in Japanese and whose movements sync with the rhythms of the language.   Shanghai Disney Resort will be the first Disney resort to bring the world of the Oscar-winning Disney Animation film “Zootopia” to life. At Zootopia Central Station, guests will find animals going about their daily lives. At the Zootopia Police Department, which doubles as the entrance for the land’s new family attraction, guests will be greeted by an Audio-Animatronics figure of Officer Clawhauser.   Mickey’s favorite teddy bear, Duffy, is a favorite of fans in all three Disney resorts in Asia, and D’Amaro shared that Duffy & Friends will star in their very own six-episode, stop-motion animated series on Disney+ next year.   Disney 100 Years of Wonder D’Amaro concluded the presentation with a first look at how Disney Parks, Experiences and Products will mark Disney 100 Years of Wonder (Disney100), the biggest celebration in the history of the company. New décor, specialty food and beverages, character experiences and more will come to parks around the world, with the heart of the celebration rooted at Disneyland Resort.Two new nighttime spectaculars — “World of Color – One” and the new fireworks show “Wondrous Journeys” — will kick off in late January at Disneyland Resort. “World of Color – One” at Disney California Adventure will celebrate the storytelling legacy started by Walt Disney a century ago. Good evening, everyone! Today I want to discuss which picks I got right and which ones I got wrong! So, let’s get started, So, I predicted that the Steelers would beat the Bengals 24-21, but the final score was 23-20 Steelers over the Bengals in overtime. The Bengals scored a touchdown with 1 second to go but the Steelers defensive player Dre Kirkpatrick blocked a game-winning extra point to which the Bengals could have won the game. Also, both team’s kickers kick trades with each other by missing key field goals. And then finally, the Steelers won the game with a game-winning field goal. I predicted that the Colts would beat the Texans 27-13, but the final score was actually tied at 20. So, no one was the winner in that game. I predicted that the Chiefs would beat the Cardinals 30-27, but the final score was 44-21 Chiefs over the Cardinals in a blowout. The Chiefs offense was on fire, the Cardinals defense could not even stop the offense, everyone on the Chiefs offense has a catch and got everyone of them involved, Patrick Mahomes threw 5 touchdown passes because the Cardinals defense was thin in the secondary. They could not stop the run and it is possible that they could not stop the run is because the Cardinals did not address the defensive line to get the interior push up the middle and they did not get a sack of Patrick Mahomes. The Cardinals offense barely did anything as Marquis Brown only had a couple catches and Greg Dortch had more catches than Hollywood Brown which is actually a warning sign. As a Cardinals fan, it is pretty disappointing to start off your season. I predicted that the Buccaneers would beat the Cowboys 38-31, but the final score was 19-3 Bucs over the Cowboys. The Bucs defense played very well holding the Cowboys offense to only a field goal. The Cowboys offense may have actually performed worse than the Cardinals offense as they did not even score a touchdown against the Bucs defense.

I predicted that the Packers would beat the Vikings 30-24, but the final score was 23-7 Vikings over the Packers. I’m actually surprised that the Vikings won with not a really close game. Last season, they were playing games with really close games which they won some and lost some. So, the Vikings so far are off to a good start to the season. I predicted that the Patriots would beat the Dolphins 32-29, but the final score was 20-7 Dolphins over the Patriots. I predicted that the 49ers would beat the Bears 31-17, but the final score was 19-10 Bears over the 49ers. I predicted that the Broncos would beat the Seahawks 34-24, but the final score was 17-16 Seahawks over the Broncos in a close game. The reason why the Broncos lost the game is because it was a terrible job coach to send out a kicker who could not even make a long field goal attempt to try and get the lead, but the kicker missed it. The Broncos offense could have gone for it on 4^th down and get a first down to get closer to the field goal, but they decided not to do it.

So overall, I have gotten 3 out of 11 picks correct! Well, didn’t do too good there as I got a lot of picks wrong. But at least I got some of them correct. Now, let’s get to the NFL week 2 picks, shall we?! The first game I will predict is the Dolphins @Ravens game. I think this should be a pretty good game. I am actually going to pick the Dolphins to beat the Ravens in a close game 19-13. The Dolphins seem to improve a lot more than some people expected. The next game I will predict is the Jets @Browns game. I think the Browns will easily beat the Jets 31-7. Even though the Jets surprised the Browns last season, they won’t surprise them again this time. The next game I will predict is Colts @Jags game, the divisional rivalries. The Colts have not won in Jacksonville in decades and that has got to change. Although, I do think that the Colts will finally beat the Jaguars in Jacksonville for the first time 25-17. The next game I will predict is the Bucs @Saints game, the divisional rivalries. I think that this should be a really good game. I think that the Saints will beat the Bucs in a close game 34-29. The next game I will predict is the Seahawks @49ers game, the divisional rivalries. The Seahawks are coming off with the win and the 49ers are coming off with a loss last week. I think the 49ers will win their first game over the Seahawks 27-23 in a close game. The next game I will predict is the Patriots @Steelers game. I think the Patriots will beat the Steelers in a close game 29-22. The next game I will predict is the Falcons @Rams game. I think the Rams will beat the Falcons 31-27 because the Falcons always seem to find ways to lose games every time, they have the lead over opponents. The next game I will predict is the Cardinals @Raiders game. Both of these teams are coming off with losses last week. So, can the Cardinals get some players back and be a little healthy and not be banged up too much? We don’t know and if the Cardinals play like they did last week, they will lose the game again and they know that they can’t let that happen again. The Raiders have some pretty good talent on offense and defense as Chandler Jones, Mason Crosby, Taylor Jacobs, Devante Adams, and Darren Waller. The Cardinals may have their hands full and they hope that it does not repeat last week. So, who can win the game? Despite that the Cardinals having some issues right now, I am actually going to give the Cardinals their first win by beating the Raiders in a close game 23-17. So, hopefully the Cardinals offense and defense will play a lot better and play well enough to win the game. Just no stupid play calling on offense and Kyler Murray letting himself get sacked with the blitz and much more. The next game I will predict is the Texans @Broncos game. I think the Broncos will beat the Texans 34-17. The next game I will predict is the Bengals @Cowboys game. I actually think the Cowboys will beat the Bengals 34-31.

The next game I will predict is the Bears @Packers game, the divisional rivalries on Sunday night football. I think the Packers will beat the Bears 30-16. The next game I will predict is the Titans @Bills game on Monday Night Football. I think the Titans will beat the Bills in a close game 26-23. The last game I will predict is the Vikings @Eagles game. I think the Eagles will beat the Vikings 31-20.
