Poor Will Byers. He spent the first season of Stranger Things trapped in the Upside Down while his friends had an amazing adventure and became friends with a superhero. Then in season two he ended up under the control of the Mind Flayer. And in season three all he wanted to do was play D&D with his friends who refused to have a session. But Stranger Things 4 might be his most painful season yet. Not because he became a third wheel during Mike’s trip to visit Eleven, though. Nor is it because he almost died when soldiers raided his home. And it has nothing to do with his frantic and dangerous trip to reunite with his friends or because it’s the show’s scariest season yet. It’s because everyone at Stranger Things forgot about poor Will Byers’ birthday.

Variety spoke to Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer about Volume One of the new season and what we can expect from the last two episodes. That included addressing Will’s sexuality, which though implied has not yet been explicitly stated. The Duffers say the last two episodes will make clear who Will “likes.” But what Volume Two can’t do is make up for everyone forgetting Will’s birthday.

Fans of the show remembered something no writer on the series did. Stranger Things 2 established Will’s birthday is March 22. But that date came and went in season four without any character acknowledging it, let alone celebrating. His own mother didn’t wish “WILL!” a happy birthday. That sleight wasn’t intentional, which might make it even worse. Matt Duffer said they simply didn’t remember what they had written six years earlier.

The brothers say going forward they might need someone to help them keep track of everything they do, the way George R.R. Martin and Stephen King do. That way they won’t make a mistake like forgetting a major character’s birthday. But that’s too little, too late for Will. They’re also not sure whether they should go back and “George Lucas” the oversight by adjusting his birthday to a different date. Or if they should “just let it be really sad” that it happened.

It doesn’t matter which option they pick, forgetting Will’s birthday in the first place is sad. But that’s just how things seem to always go for poor Will Byers.

5 Video Games Inspired by John Carpenter’s THE THING

https://nerdist.com/article/john-carpenter-the-thing-inspired-indie-games-among-us-carrion/

The summer of 1982 brought out some of the most pivotal movies to the film industry and pop culture. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Poltergeist, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Conan The Barbarian, and Tron all made their debut during this time. And another film that premiered during this time is John Carpenter’s The Thing. Compared to its 1982 competitors, The Thing was not a commercial success. However, decades later, the movie is easily one of the most recognizable films out there, leaving its imprint on everything – video games included.

Two decades after The Thing debuted, the popular movie obtained its own video game. The Universal Interactive imprint released the 2002 video game to multiple platforms, including PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 2. The third person shooter takes place after the events of the 1982 film and creates a sequel of sorts to it.

Receiving predominantly positive reviews, this film acts as a precursor to future games inspired by The Thing

Innersloth

This popular online game has torn apart many friendships. Created in 2018 by American video game studio Innersloth, Among Us places players on a spacecraft where Crewmates collaborate to complete tasks before Impostors kill everyone on board. Sounds a bit familiar? That is because the game takes direct influence from the social deduction party game Mafia and The Thing

In 2020, the game gained immense popularity due to YouTubers and Twitch streamers playing the game. Consequently becoming one of the best reviewed games by IGN. The game also became the most downloaded game in 2020 for both iPhones and iPads. Now with multiple awards, updates, and merchandise under its belt, Among Us is here to stay

Carrion

Phobia Game Studio

With Carrion, you get to become the horror itself. You play as a sentient lifeform released from captivity. Initially released in 2020 for PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch and then again in 2021 for PlayStation 4, players take on the role of “The Monster” as they use their character’s amorphous body to attack all who stand in its way. Upgrades to the game give the creature special abilities and moves that make the game even more entertaining. But that’s not that hard, being that the game won Best Debut game and Best Indie game at The Game Awards 2020.

The Pole of Cold received its name for being one of the places with the lowest air temperatures recorded. It is also the name of a particularly frightening video game. Released in 2020, Pole of Cold is a sci-fi horror game based in Antarctica, where players explore a research station containing unimaginable horrors. As you play as a scientist in Antarctica researching ice samples filled with an ancient organism, survival becomes the name of the game, when the organism escapes and takes over the rest of your team. Frightening enough, the Pole of Cold gives you one try to escape the facility and will restart the entire story once you die.

Distrust

Cheerdealers

It is all in the name. This 2017 game created by Cheerdealers was released on PC, Xbox One, mobile phones, and Playstation 4. Upon leaving a helicopter crash, a group of survivors find refuge within an abandoned station in the Arctic, only to find themselves surrounded by alien entities standing in the way of their survival. To add insult to injury, players have to survive frigid temperatures of the Arctic landscape. Distrust comes with 15 different characters with various abilities to help you survive the game, but with aliens, sub zero weather, and an endless night

Frigid

Celeritas Games

Cold enough yet? Frigid is the next frosty entry on the list. This entry has not been released yet, but has an upcoming debut in Summer 2022. Developed by Celeritas Games, Frigid tells the story of a Canadian arctic ransacked by a mysterious illness that impacts the wildlife. Inspired by The Thing, this video game focuses on researchers striving to solve the mystery of this virus, while struggling to survive nature.

The impact of The Thing spreads far and wide, with gaming inspired by its existence too. Content has the opportunity to generate new ideas and Carpenter’s film is a true indication of that. I am sure that Carpenter never imagined that video games would be made in the likeness of his film. Who knew that a film that failed to become a box office hit, would soon influence a generation of films and video games decades later.

STRAY, the Video Game You Play as a Cat, Releases in July

https://nerdist.com/article/stray-the-video-game-cat-release-date/

Who wouldn’t want to spend some time going on quests as a ginger cat wearing a backpack? Starting July 19, we all can thanks to the new sci-fi video game Stray. The latest trailer includes incredible graphics of the stray kitty exploring a neon-lit cityscape. The game from BlueTwelve Studio will be available for PC and PlayStation 4 and 5. It’s included for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium members.

The creators of the game share some insights in a blog post on PlayStation’s website. Producer Swann Martin-Raget writes about the difficulties of controlling a cat. Every cat owner knows the struggle, but it turns out it’s true in game design too. They used the internet’s most valuable resource—cat videos—as references. So those of us who upload them are actually helping professionals do their job.

The trailer includes action sequences, but also everyday cat activities like knocking things over for no reason. Or, as we call them in my house, gravity experiments. The video also shows a small flying drone named B-12 joining the quest. The team-up gives real Leia and her droid Lola vibes.

After releasing a teaser trailer in 2020 and more gameplay videos last year, we’re excited that the wait is nearly over. According to the game’s website, Stray takes place in the seedy underbelly of a decaying cybercity. It instructs us to “be stealthy, nimble, silly, and sometimes as annoying as possible with the strange inhabitants of this mysterious world.” Sounds like a cat.

It’s a huge advancement from the first computer animation in 1968, which was also of a cat! Other studios have used motion capture of cats. All cat videos are good cat videos!

Lost Season 2 of ’70s GODZILLA Cartoon Coming to YouTube

https://nerdist.com/article/70s-godzilla-cartoon-lost-season-2-youtube-godzooky/

It’s a long tradition. The “cute baby version” of a popular cartoon character. Sometimes it’s junior versions of Fred Flintstone or the Muppets. And sometimes, it’s Scrappy-Doo. But did you know that the King of the Monsters, Godzilla, also had an adorable baby version of himself in his own ’70s cartoon series? He sure did. And his name was Godzooky.

But half of the animated adventures of Godzilla and Godzooky have been unavailable to the public for decades, for unknown reasons. But just announced by Toho, the long-lost second season of Godzilla is coming exclusively to their Godzilla Official YouTube channel, starting on June 6. You can watch the trailer for Godzilla season two right here:

Godzilla premiered in 1978, and was created by Hanna-Barbera, the kings of Saturday morning cartoons in the ’70s and ’80s. In the cartoon, Godzilla was in full “good guy mode,” helping the crew of the Calico, a hydrofoil research ship. Whenever bad kaiju reared their ugly heads out of the water, the Calico crew had a signal with which they could summon Godzilla. And he’d always bring his little nephew along, Godzooky.

Hanna-Barbera never answered who the heck Godzilla’s sibling was that spawned this nephew, figuring kids wouldn’t care where he came from. (Spoiler alert: We DID want to know). Godzooky had little wings and always tried to breathe fire like his Uncle, but they were usually just smoke rings. Honestly, Godzooky kind of got in the way, but we loved him anyway. Who wouldn’t love a baby Godzilla?? Hanna-Barbera knew their audience.

TOHO/Hanna-Barbera

The show ran for two seasons on NBC, with its final episode airing in 1979. It also ran on Tokyo Channel 12 in Japan. Twenty years later, in 1998, there was another Godzilla cartoon show. But that one was tied into the 1998 movie, which had the totally wrong-looking Godzilla. Also, there was no Godzooky, which instantly made the 1978 series superior. Fans will soon be able to binge the original (and best) Godzilla toon in its entirety on June 6.
