Premiering next week, The Other Two is a new comedy from Comedy Central. Created by Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider (both writers for Saturday Night Live), and starring Drew Tarver (Bajillion Dollar Propertie$) and Helene Yorke (The Night Before, Masters of Sex) as the older siblings of the latest tween sensation, Chase Dreams. The Other Two follows their trials as they climb out of their younger brother’s shadow, aiming to become successful Millennials in NYC. Molly Shannon also stars as the incredibly supportive and somewhat air-headed mother of the three.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Two down-on-their luck siblings try to make it in the big city. They struggle to overcome changing cultural landscapes involving the increased need for gratification through social media, dumbed down expectations of quality in artistry, and a barrage of stereotypes on stereotypes on stereotypes. Oh, and they have to be supportive to their super famous younger brother now, even though it’s tough to smile when their own lives are plummeting fast.

Keeping it 100

I’m really bored of unlikable white cis characters being annoying and incompetent in NYC.

The Other Two wants to be funny in a smart way, but without actually trying. Hot-topic issues like sexism and the reclamation of derogatory words are brought up, but all the jokes fall flat. There is little substance behind them, so it feels increasingly shallow and awkward to watch. What’s worse, is that there is little to no compassion or attachment developed for virtually any of these characters. The most sympathetic one is Chase, the poor thirteen-year-old kid. He can barely form opinions yet, but is constantly sexualized (this is another extremely uncomfortable part of the show), demeaned, and forced to perform in order to appease his family and creepy-ass manager (Ken Marino).

Tarver plays Carey, an aspiring actor who is a gay man and waits tables in NYC. He has trouble asserting himself but we see him slowly grow into vocalizing what he wants as the first season unfolds. Yorke is Brooke, a once prestigious dancer who is trying to “find their passion” while bouncing from one meaningless sexcapade to the next. She is the epitome of the annoying, lazy, white feminist.

See how this sounds? Played out? Done before? Yeah. That’s how I felt. These characters and the various plots they fumble through are so unoriginal and cringey I had to constantly take breaks in between scenes. I waited through 10 episodes for the two main adults to actually own up to their bullshit. In the end, the trip may have brought them to some kind of clarity, but I was so beaten down by the nonsense I just couldn’t bring myself to care. I mentioned before how Brooke is THAT white feminist, which they bring up in the show but they never elaborate on why she’s such a terrible person. For me, that was a giant missed opportunity to dive into the many societal nuances we tangle with on a daily basis.

I could almost say that it’s worth the drudgery for the genuine moments of love and care shown between the siblings, but the trite narratives and dialogue aren’t enough for me to sincerely recommend this show to anyone. If it’s on while you’re home alone and not sober, perhaps give it a try. For me, personally, I was bored…which is probably the biggest sin a comedy show can commit.

Available for viewing January 24th, The Other Two is on at 10:30/9:30 central time.

Amber Rose is Securing the Bag, Earning $2 Million A Year Off Instagram Alone

https://www.blackenterprise.com/amber-rose-instagram-van-lathan/

Amber Rose, the 35-year-old stripper-turned-model, claims that she nets about $2 million from posting on Instagram. Born Amber Levonchuck, the bi-racial beauty boasts 18.8 million followers on Instagram, where she frequently flaunts beauty, fashion, and diet products. And it turns out that these sponsored posts are helping her rake in major coins.

During an interview on The Red Pill podcast, host Van Lathan asked Rose how much she earns on the social media site. “Probably like $2 million a year, just off Instagram,” she said. “There’s girls that make more than $2 million a year, I make $2 million on Instagram a year.” Rose explained that she generates revenue through “all of her endorsement deals,” which have included companies like online retailer Fashion Nova and controversial weight loss products like BoomBod and Flat Tummy tea.

In response, Lathan joked that “a ni–a went to college and bought into that bulls–t, and Amber’s making $2 million off Instagram. Wow!”

Rose also opened up in the interview about her tough upbringing in Philadelphia, revealing that she initially started selling drugs as a means of survival before she began stripping as a teen.

“I usually don’t tell people this, but I tried selling crack in my neighborhood,” Rose confessed. “They said I was gonna get robbed, I was a girl and I was too pretty, and it wasn’t going to happen,” she said. “So what I did, I would bag it up for them, I would weigh it and bag up the crack rocks for them. And they would throw me some money.”

According to BankRate.com, Rose has amassed a $12 million net worth throughout her career as an author, media personality, music artist, and a former model signed with Ford Models. She also launched her own emoji app that reportedly earned $4 million in 2016. She gained her claim to fame as a video vixen and by dating Kanye West from 2008 to 2010.

In 2016, Rose appeared on ABC’s Dancing With The Stars and became the ambassador for the SlutWalk, an annual women’s empowerment march to combat rape culture. That same year, she has teamed up with Zoobe, a character voice-messaging app that creates 3D characters.

Watch Rose’s interview on The Red Pill below. Her remarks about her Instagram endorsements start around the 1:20:00 mark.

Things We Saw Today: Is Warner Bros. Planning a Harley Quinn Trilogy?

https://www.themarysue.com/harley-quinn-trilogy/

harley quinn margot robbie

If there’s one bright spot to come out of the hot mess that was Suicide Squad, it was Margot Robbie’s pitch perfect performance as beloved bad girl Harley Quinn. We already know that Robbie is set to reprise the role in Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey, alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary.

But is the DCEU planning a Harley Quinn trilogy? Rumors are swirling that Birds of Prey will be the first chapter in an all-female saga, with Gotham City Sirens coming up next followed by Birds of Prey v Gotham City Sirens. A version of Gotham City Sirens that teams up Harley with Poison Ivy and Catwoman was in development, but was put on the back burner once Birds of Prey came together.

Of course, this will all likely depend on the box office performance of Birds of Prey. Thankfully, the “debate” over whether or not female-led superhero films can succeed at the box office has largely been put to rest thanks to the massive success of Wonder Woman and the pre-sale figures for Captain Marvel.

The only question is whether another year at the box office will give audiences superhero genre fatigue, since Birds of Prey is set for 2020. But given how strong the box office was for Aquaman, we doubt the trend is falling anytime soon.
