Amazon Prime has a new show coming soon called Carnival Row.

The series Carnival Row stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne. The show is set in a Victorian fantasy world filled with an assortment of mythological creatures. Portrayed as immigrants, the creatures have left their exotic homelands due to invasions by humans. The rules are strict and the creatures are forbidden to live and love freely. But, not all humans are bad. Orlando plays Detective Rycroft Philostrate who has a dangerous affair with Vignette Stonemoss, a refugee faerie played by Cara. A string of gruesome murders threatens the peace at The Row. Philostrate works the case while Vignette hides a secret that endangers the human world.

The show also stars Simon McBurney as Runyan Millworthy, an eccentric traveling showman, David Gyasi as Agreus, a mysteriously wealthy faun who defies social order by moving into an affluent human neighborhood, Tamzin Merchant as Imogen Spurnrose, a young woman looking to turn her family’s fortune around, Andrew Gower as Ezra Spurnrose, a neurotic son who has gambled his father’s fortune away, Karla Crome as Tourmaline, a quick-witted faerie poet driven from her war-torn land, Caroline Ford as Sophie Longerbane, a clever and mysterious young noblewoman, Indira Varma as Piety Breakspear, the regal and cunning matriarch of the family that rules the city of The Burgue, and Jared Harris as Absalom Breakspear, the imperious and secretive Chancellor of The Burgue.

Carnival Row will be available on Amazon Prime Video August 30th.

During today’s press conference for Carnival Row, the panel mostly focused on three things: themes, attention to detail, and the personalities they are excited for audiences to see on screen. In attendance was Orlando Bloom, Tamzin Merchant, David Gyasi, writer Travis Beacham, and writer Marc Guggenheim. As we got started, the conversation immediately focused on some of the more timely themes of the show. The show itself is socially relevant, tying in themes of immigration and racism. “The show wrestles with the issues of time, telling the story of the struggles that people are going through, and gives it a human perspective,” says Bloom. One of the things television allows people to do is look at things and discuss those issues. Beacham had a lot to say on the subject — being one of the main writers of the series.

“I think a lot of the problems that we have as a society stem from the fact that we don’t talk to each other anymore. It’s considered rude to discuss politics. As a result, we all have placed ourselves in these bubbles. And the nice thing about art is it can maybe, hopefully, jumpstart some of those conversations. And, having those conversations is ultimately healthy for our society”, added Travis Beacham.

“Storytelling is an act of empathy,” says Guggenheim.

Visually, this show looks amazing with different species and magical creatures flooding the setting of a Victorian-era town. What came up in the discussion was the idea of the attention to detail that the show impresses upon the viewer. “The first time I got excited was when I walked down the Row,” says Bloom, “I was overjoyed to walk down Carnival Row and see the level of detail. It was cool because I don’t think I’ve ever seen this before; jars with animals that have been combined, the potions. I geek out over detail.” It’s a very immersive experience from what the teasers and cast would suggest. It’s big, diverse, and expansive.

Merchant was all about being able to showcase a version of a character that is the opposite of herself. Merchant described her character Imogen as someone who is a bit of a ball buster. “The female characters that we have on the show are all amazing. They are really complex characters and filmed beautifully. Very complex, multifaceted female characters. That’s a treat for me to play,” she says.

Bloom had a different take on his character, Detective Rycroft. “In reality, I wear my heart on my sleeve. It’s nice to embrace that masculinity that’s well balanced with a feminine quality. A quality of openness and empathy,” he states. Gyasi had an interesting perspective where he questions his character’s actions, genuinely wanting to understand how a person does what they do. “I’m interested in hierarchy or class,” he states. “ My character buys the biggest house in the richest area with cash.” It is worth noting that Gyasi’s character is a faun living in a human neighborhood. “How does someone do that,” he exclaims, “and then survive and make a success.”

We as the audience get to go on the journey with these characters. It should be a fun ride. A show with faeries, magical creatures, forbidden love, detective sleuthing, and timely themes seems like a show we should all get behind. Looking forward to another Orlando Bloom show to add to the collection.

Meanwhile, the Dragon’s Head is doing the same with Sofia. Recommended for Black Lightning fans and those who are fans of the Batman extended family (I.e. Detective Comics, Gotham Central, Shadow of the Bat)
Naomi 6 by David Walker, Brian Michael Bendis, Jamal Campbell & Wes Abbott: So I think by now all fans have seen the "name spoiler" but they understate the fact that a) the DC Multiverse comes back into play again with a Wonder Comics book. And b) For all the detractors at the beginning of this journey, Walker and Bendis have delivered a solid young, black heroine for DC. Now to the story, as her family's concerned about her well being, Naomi travels to learn the truth about her parents...
Wonder Twins 6 by Mark Russell, Stephen Byrne and Dave Sharpe: Zan and Jayna race against time to stop The Scrambler from disrupting the world, only to find out that a valued friend is also involved. Recommended for comic book fans who like more nuance and subtle satire in their Superhero fare.
Wonder Woman 74 by G Willow Wilson, Jesus Merino, Xermanico, Romulo Fajardo Jr & Pat Brosseau features Diana and her allies running into Empress Hippolyta as the search for her mother and the missing Amazons continues. If that statement confuses you? Go back and get/reread issue 73 now. Recommended for fans of mythology
Young Justice 7 by Brian Michael Bendis, John Timms, Dan Hipp, David LaFuente, Gabe Eltaeb & Wes Abbott: Get ready to hold onto your hats as the team is lost across the DC Multiverse. Stops include 2 very recognizable Earths to hardcore comic book fans: one that’s very animalistic and the other where some things went a little off the rails for the heroes. And we get to know a little bit more about Teen Lantern.
Marvel Action Black Panther 2 by Kyle Baker, Juan Samu, David Garcia Cruz & Tom B. Long:First, for all those fans who say that the “Star Wars” Story in the regular series has lost them, Kyle Baker is writing a back to basics T’Challa story here. Now, the King and Shuri are trying to foil a dastardly plot and, well, something goes wrong (as usual)
Bitter Root Red Summer One Shot By David Walker, Chuck Brown, (Story 1) Sanford Greene, Daniela Miwa (Story 2) Lisa K Weber, Kelly Fitzpatrick (Story 3) Daniel Lish (Story 4) Chris Bruner, Rico Renzi (Story 5) Khary Randolph, Matt Herms (Story 6) Dietrich Smith, Anthony George, Clayton Cowles & John Jennings:  Want to know a bit more about the history of this Sangerye family of monster hunters? Here’s your guide to their triumphs and tragedies. I will say that for one character, my view on them has totally changed. And it probably isn't who you think it is....
Avengers 21 by Jason Aaron, Jason Masters, Jason Keith & VC’s Joe Caramagna: After the Vampire War and War of the Realms, the team has time to unwind...well not all of them. T’Challa meets with Director Coulson. Yep. We all know where this will be heading... Recommended for.... come on. We all know who would like to read Avengers by this point.
Champions 7 by Jim Zub, Steven Cummings, Marcio Menyz & VC’s Clayton Cowles convey a crisis of conscience for Ms. Marvel and Nova tries to get his helmet back from the Nova Corps...with one BIG revenge driven hinge. Things have just gotten even more complicated. Recommended for teen angst fans.
Invisible Woman 1 by Mark Waid, Mattia De Iulis & VC’s Joe Caramagna: So it seems that Reed and Ben aren’t the only ones with high adventure pasts. The difference is, Sue’s take place AFTER she got her powers. There’s the hook as a secret agent acquaintance goes silent and she goes in to rescue him. Recommended to fans of FF...especially those of the Waid-Wieringo run.
Ironheart 8 by Eve L Ewing, Luciano Vecchio, Geoff, Matt Milla & VC’s Clayton Cowles: After the Zombieville Chicago incident, Ri goes to a mystical expert and discovers that this Ten Rings thing has deeper ramifications than she thought. The RiRi world tour begins. Recommended for New Warriors fans and those who love young black heroes learning their way. Speaking of which...
Miles Morales, Spider-Man 8 by Saladin Ahmed, Javier Garron, David Curiel & VC's Travis Lanham: Beaten up. Trapped. Unmasked. Spider-Man is being put through the ringer by an unknown enemy only known as The Assessor. Things can’t get worse...right? This is
Secret Warps Weapon Hex by (Story 1) Al Ewing, Carlos Villa, Juan Vlasco, Carlos Lopez & VC’s Joe Caramagna (Story 2) Tim Seeley, Bob Quinn, Rachelle Rosenberg & Caramagna:The sequel to Infinity Warps continues as Weapon Hex takes on the forces of the Mad Ghost to rescue her sister Speed Weasel. Star Wars 68 by Greg Pak, Phil Noto and VC’s Clayton Cowles A new creative team brings a new tale as our band of heroes are split apart on different missions. Luke on his own. Han and Leia. Chewbacca and C3PO. Wait. What? Yeah. I see your faces and well, theirs isn’t for the faint of heart.
War of the Realms Omega by (Story 1) Jason Aaron, Ron Garney, Matt Milla & VC's Joe Sabino (Story 2) Al Ewing, Aaron, Cafu, Jesus Aburtov & Sabino (Story 3) Daniel Kibblesmith, Oscar Bazaldua, David Curiel & VC's Clayton Cowles: This one sees the fallout from the War affect the planet. Birth of a new Valkyrie. Thor has a “new” mantle. Frank Castle has a new mission statement. What of the Trickster God Loki? And after tasting godhood, how does Matt Murdock go back to “normal”?
Incidentals 19 by Ramon Govea, Brandon Easton, Jose Jaro, DC Alonso & Saida TemofonteA final showdown between teams. A defined mission statement. Unfortunately, not everyone you got to know through this series makes it out ok. And even if they do? Seven Days is on the horizon...
Noble 19 by Kevin Grievoux, Manuel Garcia, LeBeau Underwood, Jason Moore, Chris Sotomayor & Saida Temofonte: And some people thought that David and Astrid’s reunion would mean a watering down on the action? Wrong. WRONG! The cross country chase continues as the government seeks to silence the couple.
Ah. That felt good. Not my best but I'm relearning my fastball. Got to relearn to do my snark on this thing. LOL Thanks For Reading! I hope you readers got intrigued by one or two of these books. Until Next Time, Keep Fantasizing!
