First off, this quick Blerd blast may be biased simply because of the venue where we reviewed the latest Tom Cruise umpteenth (ok, ok it’s the sixth!) Mission Impossible franchise film….Fallout. This was my second time checking out a flick at the vanglorious cineaste haven, The Alamo Drafthouse located in heavily gentrified Planet Brooklyn. One can never underestimate the appeal of watching an edge of your (high back) seat spy thriller while dining on a brisket burger and imbibing on an imported spirit of your choice. Was the film formulaic and stunt driven? Yes…..of course, Was it another IWMM (Impossible White Man Movie)? Why, yes….it was. BUT….I’m far more forgiving of the aforementioned Hollywood formula, having checked out a preceding IBMM (you can guess this acronym) sequel, Equalizer 2 starring Denzel Washington. In a current movie landscape that is replete with CGI laden fare (we’re not complaining….it’s just an observation), the “old standard” spy/action thriller still holds up smashingly. And let me not be remiss in failing to pay homage to the classics-the iconic 60s TV series that showcased such Hollywood favorites as Peter Graves, Leonard Nimoy, Martin Landau, Greg Morris, Lesley Ann Warren and Barbara Bain. Undoubtedly, due to Mr. Cruise’s oft talked about eccentricities, I might have actually seen only one (now two) of the MI films from the two decades old plus franchise. And then compound THAT with the classic series, its a tough hill to climb (that the actor appears to be quite adroit in handling). But after MI:6, I think it’s time for a personal filmography retrospective. And then there are those classic TV episodes…
