The 16 felony charges of disorderly conduct against Jussie Smollett were dropped but there are still consequences coming his way. He will reportedly have to pay the city of Chicago back for basically wasting their time.
A letter was sent to Smollett and his legal team demanding that he pay $130,106.15 to cover the overtime of the two dozen police officers and detectives that participated in the investigation, Billboard reports.
“As a part of this investigation, Chicago police reviewed video and physical evidence and conducted several interviews, expending resources that could have been used on other investigations,” read the letter. “Ultimately, the Chicago police investigation revealed that you knowingly filed a false police report and had in fact orchestrated your own attack.”
To avoid prosecution the Empire actor will have to submit this payment in a timely matter.
Smollett claimed that he was attacked on January 29th, 2019 by two men who shouted gay and racist slurs at him while physically assaulting him on his way home from the airport. It was later revealed that the two assailants, Abimbola Osundairo and Olabinjo Osundairo, know Smollett and have played extras on Empire and one of them even trained Smollett in the past. After further investigation, the 36-year-old was indicted by a grand jury, but the charges were dropped five weeks later.
