The coronavirus pandemic has upended the sports world and caused the cancellation of major events like Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. For tennis champion Venus Williams, though, the turn of events has added a whole new meaning to home court advantage. 

Time at home has allowed Williams to get organized and indulge in her self-care products, which include a relaxing body oil infused with rose petals, a fancy skin toning device that was given to her by a friend, and a mineral sunscreen that won’t make her look ashy. How does she know? She created it.

This week ESSENCE had the opportunity to chat with the tennis icon, and here’s what she told us about adjusting to quarantine life, wearing sunscreen and making her foray into the beauty industry.

 Quarantine Life

“In the beginning, I thought we’ll be back to business in April. And then I started to realize that wouldn’t happen. I started to wonder when I’ll play again and what do I do. But now I’ve accepted it and am trying to take advantage of the time that I have to do other things,” says Williams. And that includes getting organized. “I’ve learned how to get organized. Honestly, I know where everything is now. I have more time now because I’m spending less time finding things.” 

Wearing Sunscreen

“I’ve been a huge fan of wearing sunscreen—not at the beginning of my life, but when I got a little bit older I started to understand the value of taking care of your skin,” she says. “And not just the skin on your face, but the skin on your body, too. My sister Serena, she always wore sunscreen. I never did, but I would see her wearing it all the time, and I think one day it just clicked like, Oh, my God. I’m in my thirties and not serious about this. What if I’ve been wasting all this time? 

“As an African-American, I felt like Oh, I have built-in sunscreen. I don’t need sunscreen. I’m invincible. But that’s not the truth. I’m happy I got wise, but I just wish I would’ve done it sooner.”

Her Foray Into Beauty

“I’m very much into clean health, so this fits into my philosophy partnering with Credo,” she says. “They’re the experts on clean beauty. The partnership is organic, and they’ve been working on this product and renditions for a while, and I’m extremely excited about what we produced because it’s a mineral sunscreen that does absorb into your skin and you can’t tell that it there.” 

Venus launched the EleVen by Venus X Credo Beauty collection today on credobeauty.com, and it includes sun protection for all skin tones.

When it comes to creating beauty products under the EleVen by Venus brand, Williams says this is just the beginning.

TENET Trailer Just Raises Even MORE Questions!

Christopher Nolan’s Tenet has been a beacon for many a film fan’s anticipation since well before it even let us in on its title. At present, we don’t even really know much of what the movie is about. Is it a time-travel story? Or one long cinematic palindrome? Is it found footage of Robert Pattinson’s experiences in isolation? Your guess is as good as ours. And now, a new trailer is here to answer some of our questions… or, you know, just supplement them with further, even more confounding questions.

As expected, Nolan’s latest project remains ever inscrutable. The trailer does show us peeks at John David Washington. He’s jumping up buildings, catching bullets into his gun, dining with Michael Caine, and, in some roundabout fashion, preventing World War III… And something “worse” than Armageddon.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 and the resultant shutdown of businesses and institutions across the world, Tenet has taken on something of a new significance. As of this writing, Tenet distinguishes itself among the many forthcoming blockbusters that have pushed back release to or beyond the end of 2020. Wonder Woman 1984 has been pushed to August, the James Bond flick No Time to Die has shifted to November, and Tom Holland’s third Spider-Man movie has rescheduled for 2021.

Uniquely, Nolan’s picture maintains its planned release date of July 17, 2020, despite the apprehension that public moviegoing so soon in the future could be incredibly dangerous given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. As excited as we may be for the movie, we can’t help but hope it delays release in the name of safety.

No matter how much time we have before the release of Tenet, we can bet that we won’t come close to guessing what its “time-inversion” plot has in store. Things look pretty trippy in this trailer, and we’re stoked to see exactly how they come together… or don’t.

Three Accounts to Follow to Add a Little Levity to Our Current News Hellscape

The news is deeply terrible right now. Nearly every internet list–of which there are many–offering tips on how to take care of yourself during the coronavirus pandemic suggests limiting the amount of news you take in each day. As someone whose job relies on consuming all the news, all the time, I 100% recommend not doing that if you’re able.

But if you do want to stay informed, here are three Twitter accounts to make the news a bit more palatable.

Sarah Cooper’s Donald Trump lip syncs

Really the only way I can stand hearing Trump’s voice is when it’s coming out of comedian Sarah Cooper’s (@sarahcpr) face.

She absolutely nails Trump’s bombastic bloviating with total sincerity, but the use of props and cutaways to other characters adds an all too fitting level of absurdity to his already absurd ramblings.

Maria DeCotis’s Andrew Cuomo lip syncs

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo holds daily press briefings to share the work being done to combat the coronavirus and much of their content is very serious. But Cuomo is also known for going off on some lengthy personal tangents. Comedian Maria DeCotis (@MariaDeCotis) has focused on the relationship between Cuomo and his family, especially his daughters, and also especially his daughter’s boyfriend, as they all quarantine together.

Cuomo is clearly just as stir-crazy as the rest of us and DeCotis’ reenactments really highlight that fact.

Also, A+ props.

Room Rater

Gone are the days of in-studio cable news interviews. Instead, now, every guest and sometimes the hosts are broadcasting from their homes, which means we suddenly get to look inside the homes of a bunch of strangers. Room Rater (@ratemyskyperoom) is here to judge those homes.

Setting up a good video chat background is hard–a lot harder than a lot of guests and professional correspondents seem to have realized. Between the lighting, the decor balance, and the camera angle, it’s a lot to keep in mind.

If you watch a lot of news, this account will give you something to focus on besides the terrible news itself.

A surprising number of media figures have clearly been paying attention to the account and are actually taking notes.

(Although sometimes a person will forget everything they’ve learned.)

It’s nice to have a fun distraction as we watch everything around us burn.

Gucci Launches #StandWithWomen Innovative

Covid-19 shocked the world. For many of us, our day to day and usual routine was shattered. We were forced to turn our home, which in some cases can be a relief from work, into our office. And for others who used their home as an escape, their worst nightmare came true.

For women and girls who are subject to violence, Covid-19 has intensified underlying gender inequities. Building on its efforts to help fight the pandemic, Gucci, through its CHIME FOR CHANGE initiative and the Kering Foundation have partnered together to create the #StandWithWomen campaign.

According to the UN Women which is confirmed by Google Trends Data, there has been an increase in domestic violence cases across the world during the COVID-19 outbreak showing +143% increase in queries on the search engine related to domestic violence cases worldwide. “Now more than ever is the time to join together to protect the health, safety and human rights of girls and women around the world,” says Co-Founder and Kering Foundation Board Director Salma Hayek Pinault. “We stand in solidarity with women everywhere because we cannot risk the progress we have made in the long fight for gender equality,” she exclaimed.

The campaign follows donations from Kering, Gucci’s parent company, and its Foundation, in China, Italy, France and the US, and Gucci’s 2 million euros donation under the call to action “We Are All In This Together”. The two companies are also working with with grassroots organizations on the frontlines that will allow these partners to continue their critical work mobilizing for the safety, health and justice of all women.
