Actress Joy Bryant periodically pulls from a deck of goddess cards she keeps on her desk while filming her show For Life in New York City. Unlike traditional tarot cards, goddess cards feature feminine archetypes paired with divine messages to offer guidance for the moment. Bryant pulled a card featuring Yhi, an Australian aboriginal sun goddess, during her interview about season two of the ABC series.

“Yhi illuminates your path with her rays and brings clarity as she shows you what you need to know,” Bryant told ESSENCE.

For over two decades, Bryant has lit her ownaria-label=”Beyoncé (opens in a new tab)” href=”https://www.essence.com/entertainment/black-women-nominations-2021-grammy-awards/” target=”_blank”>Beyoncé, and played opposite of 50 Cent in Get Rich Or Die Tryin‘. She reunites with 50 fifteen years later as “Marie” in the rapper’s latest TV drama. Bryant stars as the estranged wife of Aaron Wallace (played by Nicholas Pinnock), a wrongly convicted prisoner who becomes a lawyer in a fight to overturn his life sentence.

While the former model has tackled a variety of film and TV jobs, her role as Marie gave her the opportunity to view her upbringing from a different vantage point. Raised by her grandmother Lorraine after her mother gave birth to her at just 15 years old, Bryant feels close to her family’s legacy as she depicts a grandma on-screen herself.

“During the pilot, I realized, ‘Oh my God, [Marie]’s the grandmother,’” said Bryant.

The leading lady now understands her grandmother’s profound sacrifice in a deeper way. To make things more synchronous, the actress is 46—which is the same age her grandmother was when she was born.

“She could have given me up for adoption, and she didn’t. I come from a poor family in the Bronx; resources were slim to none. And she didn’t have to do that. But she did.” she told ESSENCE. “Even though I don’t have children, I’m thinking of me taking on that responsibility— just when you think you did your job, there’s another job to do.”

While empathizing with her grandmother, Bryant also approaches her current role with a sense of catharsis to symbolically reconcile the unhealthy relationship she had with her birth mom.

“We Had The Most Tumultuous Relationship” Kelly Rowland Talks About What She’s Learned From Her Mother

As Kelly Rowland prepares to welcome her second child, she’s likely thinking about the ways in which she was mothered—what worked for her and what didn’t in the relationship with her late mother, Doris Rowland Garrison.

She spoke about her mother recently during her appearance on the “Tamron Hall Show.”

Rowland told Hall that she sings about the relationship on her new album.

“There’s a song that’s a part of this record that really means a lot to me – it’s definitely dedicated to my mother because it’s just about giving people their love while they’re here on this Earth and not taking advantage of time. If COVID has taught us anything, it’s not taking advantage of time and people.” Rowland continued, “It’s so crazy because my mom and I had the most tumultuous relationship and now when I’m able to look back at some of her decisions that she made, the things that she did, I realize that we’re all a product of our environment. It’s our choice to be positive. If you don’t like the way the scenario went, or don’t like the way this personality or characteristic is, we have the ability to change it. I just wanted to do things differently, but she taught me so much in her space, in her stage as a mother and I’m so grateful to her for that and grateful to her for her sacrifices. You become a mother and you see why you do or say certain things and some of it is hard to process or understand, but you grow to understand it and I get it now.”

She also spoke about the reaction of her family and close friends (including Beyoncé) to the news that she’s expecting again.

“She was just happy, super happy and excited. When I told Tina [Knowles], when I told La [La Anthony], when I told all of my circle of incredible women they were just supportive and excited and called me every day. And specifically making sure that I’m not doing too much.”

Most excited of all is Rowland’s son, big-brother-to-be Titan.

“That little guy right there, my Titan, he’s the most hyped. This is his baby.” Rowland continued, “His father and I told him, we pulled him to the side and told him that he was going to be a big brother, and he just lost his mind. He literally jumped up and down and said ‘When? I’m so ready.’ Every day he asks me, ‘When does the baby get here?’”

Lastly, Rowland spoke about her sequel to her Christmas movie with Lifetime, “Merry Liddle Christmas Wedding.”

“I think that there was representation. It was a full Black cast and Black director. I was very adamant about that, especially executive producing this film and having a really good time. It was awesome hearing from the actors specifically who are in Canada, because we filmed this in Canada, they were like ‘This is the first Black set I’ve ever been on.’ So to have that kind of feedback and to feel seen. When I was looking over my social media last year it was interesting watching so many people say ‘Oh my gosh I love this family,’ ‘They make me feel so belonged or together,’ ‘My family does this like the Liddles,’ it was all of that. And I’m so grateful that so many people tuned in, and that’s really what happened, so many people tuned in.”
