The world is opening back up and so are opportunities to get our social lives back. This means that festivals, carnivals, and experiences including ESSENCE Festival are making a full comeback and we can’t wait. We can all agree that the most exciting part of the festival process is the fashion, style, and glam. Don’t know where to start? These beauty experts can get you right!

“Festival season is fun. It’s the perfect time to show your personality and be free. I always suggest trying more daring things,” Bobbie Riley, founder of Bobbie Riley Beauty University told ESSENCE. “When the pandemic started the women were inside and eager to get dolled up and express themselves like they were used to. With COVID being over and festivals back and running, do-it-yourself makeup is that key tool to having fun, breaking free, and expressing themselves!”

When it comes to prepping for music festival season, makeup artist Alexus Brown prefers a natural beat with a hint of pizazz which she refers to as the “Superstar Glō.” She describes it as a “simple, sleek” look and “similar to the look Kim [Kardashian] wears on a regular [basis].” “These looks are timeless! If you want more of a pop, those bold vibrant colors could be a perfect companion in creating that perfect eye-catching look that will have all eyes on you!,” Brown told ESSENCE.

Below, Riley and Brown give ESSENCE readers their makeup artist expertise on the do’s, don’t’s, and must-haves of festival season for all your beauty needs. Check it out!

Lipstick versus Lip Gloss

I absolutely love a good gloss, but for longevity, lipstick would be more efficient due to the long hours spent outdoors because you’ll have to touch it up less. If I had to choose a shade, I’d definitely be going for a matte mauve pink with a brown lip liner. If I wanted to make a bold statement, I’d go for a banging red lip! Not just any red but a red that has blue undertones. When a red lip is worn you have no choice but to be fearless, bold, and have all eyes on you. – Alexus Brown

Experiment with Colors

Be young, wild, and free. That’s what festivals are for, right? Living your best life, enjoying what life offers all in one big day! Colors to experiment with are blues such as teals on the lip and eye. Iridescent for those luminous colors that change when seen from different angles. If you aren’t big into eye shadow, white liner, black liner, or color on top of the black liner is beautiful.

I’ll say this ladies – you can’t go wrong with super bold pigments. You can also do blue, fuchsia, and emerald green colored lashes. If you want to go out with a bang, try out face laces for graphic eyeliner and eye stickers. – Bobbie Riley

Get Crazy and Creative

I love the look that resembles actual art on the faces [and]  the creative looks that stand out. The looks that embellish the person’s facial features. I’ve seen a face that was very expressive with triangle shapes around the eyes – it was super impressive! I absolutely love to see the looks that combined the blush with glitters on the cheeks because it looks so fierce! Last but not least, I love the jewels that are placed on the face in an ever so pleasing way! – Alexus Brown

Coverage Galore

Other essentials while out at festivals and carnivals for a little coverage are BB Cream or CC Cream. For smooth but high coverage, light natural finishes, and any long-wear foundation is a plus for outdoors. We can’t forget our sunscreen – the higher the SPF the greater for your face and body. – Bobbie Riley

Match Your Shadow with Your Fit

Your outfit determines the eyeshadow look. If you wanted to stay more on the natural side of things, I’d go with a warm brown on the lid with a bold winged liner and a pop of color in the inner corners of the eye. Sometimes when I’m feeling fancy I’d go for a cut crease with details that matches the outfit – Alexus Brown

Hydrating, Mattifying, or Poreless Primers?

It depends on the skin. During a summer festival for oily skin, you may overproduce oil and that can ruin the make-up look you were aiming for. Don’t forget your SPF! As for dry skin – hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. The summer heat and dry air will dry your skin out so fast especially if you plan to be at the festival all day, use a moisturizer and SPF. – Bobbie Riley

Keep Your Face Fresh, Clean, and Hydrated

Having a good skincare regimen is essential every morning and night. Starting your makeup with a clean face is just as important as ending your night with a clean face because it rids the skin surface of any dirt, oil, and makeup particles. Most people think wearing makeup creates breakouts but in reality, it’s the skincare regimen that protects the skin. Properly cleansing your face after a day of makeup eliminates the chances of your pores getting clogged, therefore limiting the chances of a breakout.

It is also important to make sure your skin is properly hydrated and fresh, especially as an active makeup wearer.  Maintaining your skin’s health and hydration helps elongates youthfulness, creating fewer wrinkles and discoloration upon the skin. A good skincare regime is a foundation to a beautiful face of makeup every time! – Alexus Brown

‘Our Kind of People’ Explores America’s Black Upper Class

https://blackgirlnerds.com/our-kind-of-people-explores-americas-black-upper-class/

Inspired by Lawrence Otis Graham’s provocative, critically acclaimed book, “Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class,” the series takes place in the aspirational world of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard, a historical stronghold where the rich and powerful black elite have come to play for over 50 years. From writer and executive producer Karin Gist (Star, Grey’s Anatomy) and executive producer Lee Daniels (Empire, The United States Vs. Billie Holiday), Our Kind of People follows a strong-willed, single mom as she sets out to reclaim her family’s name and make an impact with her revolutionary haircare line that highlights the innate, natural beauty of Black women.

But she soon discovers a dark secret about her own mother’s past that will turn her world upside-down and shake up this community forever. The show is a soapy, thrilling exploration of race and class in America and an unapologetic celebration of black resilience and achievement.  The series stars Yaya DaCosta (Chicago Med, Whitney), Morris Chestnut (The Resident), Joe Morton (Scandal), Nadine Ellis (Let’s Stay Together), Lance Gross (Hawaii 5-0), Rhyon Nicole Brown (Empire), Kyle Bary (Ginny & Georgia) and newcomer Alana Bright.  Ben Silverman and Rodney Ferrell (Propagate); Marc Velez (Lee Daniels Entertainment); Claire Brown (The Gist Of It Productions); Pam Williams and Montrel McKay also serve as executive producers. Tasha Smith (9-1-1, Big Sky, P-Valley) direct the series premiere of Our Kind of People.

Series premieres Sept 21st 9/8c on Fox.

Black Supes @HBO Max?; SDCC @ Home Revelations; Slavery Themed Wedding Pix Go Viral; He-Man Debuts; TrollHunters; Blade Runner: Black Lotus; Static Shock Vintage Rumor; The Grindhouse Airs SUN 6pm EST

http://www.afronerd.com/2021/07/black-supes-hbo-max-sdcc-home.html

Wow, are the days moving fast, folks!  Let's rectify that, and slow things down a bit, by checking out the latest edition of Afronerd Radio's Grindhouse broadcast-airing every Sunday at 6 p.m. eastern on BTalk 100.  Join your ethereal (like Marvel's Vision) AFROnerdist hosts, Dburt and the "Uncanny" Daryll B., as they discuss the following topics:  just when we thought we were going to get one Black Superman story, it turns out that courtesy of actor, Michael B. Jordan, we might be getting two Afro-Kryptonian projects in the next few years.  It was recently announced that Jordan will be bringing Val Zod to life in a presently untitled HBO-Max vehicle; and if a Black Supes wasn't enough, what will audiences think about a Blacktino Batgirl? It was just announced that actor, Leslie Grace (In the Heights) was tapped to portray the "Bat-Family" member in a new WB film; San Diego's Comic-Con or SDCC21 is off to the races albeit virtually for the second time in a row due to the current uncertainty of global COVID-19 pandemic; We'll try to decode the stories and revelations coming out of the event this year; And then there are the recent slavery-themed wedding pictures that have enraged many on the internet.......

All that we can ask is who and why?  We will try to use our best Holmesian skills of deduction to figure this hot mess out; the highly-anticipated Netflix Masters of the Universe: Revelation reboot by filmmaker, Kevin Smith debuted this weekend and we have our thoughts;  Oscar-winning director, Guillermo Del Toro's TrollHunters Netflix franchise is wrapping with this weekend's release; coming out of SDCC21, we see that the Blade Runner: Black Lotus trailer just hit the cyberwebs:

There's an interesting but not surprising story coming out about the WB's early attempts to put together a Static Shock project together except the canonically Black character might have been portrayed by the very White 90s Home Improvement actor, Jonathan Taylor Thomas-you can't make this stuff up, people:

Jordan Peele is back (but he never really left) with another horror film entitled, Nope and, all that we have as a teaser is this poster.....hmmm:

And lastly, who is Mr. M and,  is he Marvel's version of DC's Dr. Manhattan?  Let's discuss.

One thing that Dburt is doing (finally) is investing in cryptocurrency, courtesy of Roundlyx. We would implore our followers to investigate, discern and then explore by using our referral code: afro-87A4BF

The Out Side Is an Amazing Kickstarter Featuring a Comic Anthology by Trans and Nonbinary Artists

https://www.themarysue.com/the-out-side-kickstarter/

The Out Side Kickstarter cover

The Out Side is an upcoming comic anthology by a team of trans and nonbinary artists. Launched by Kao Studios, the anthology will feature 16 stories from a diverse lineup of creatives, each one sharing their personal experiences with self-acceptance.

Vincent Kao is no stranger to creating comics. He’s the staff-wielding, bug-bashing creative behind Magical Boy, a series about a trans boy who finds out he comes from a long line of magical girls, oh, and the family house cat can talk (more like sass, as cats tend to do). The Out Side is his first time doing a project of this caliber (since there are multiple creatives involved), but as he interacted with more fans of Magical Boy he was inspired to create an anthology that highlighted several trans and nonbinary voices.

Kao had this to say about the project:

“My goal for the project is to assemble a fantastic group of open trans and nonbinary artists who will share their personal tales of their journey of self-discovery and acceptance. I also sought to amplify the voices of POC creators, who all too often are not included to the same extent in conversations like these. Last, I want the stories to be safe for work so that we can get this book into as many hands as possible, especially the teens and tweens out there who might not have access to these sorts of tales of self-affirmation and representation. This is our mission.”

I haven’t really made it a secret that I absolutely feel like these conversations need to happen at a young age. Queer youth need to see that they aren’t alone and that their feelings are valid, but also, folks outside of the community need to learn the importance of accepting those who are different from them. A story like this is also needed for the queer community itself as trans and nonbinary folks aren’t always included in queer conversations within the community – particularly POC, as Kao says in his quote about the project.

I’m delighted to see an anthology where everyone involved is trans and nonbinary, and everyone is being given space to tell their story in their own way. This already feels like an anthology that I would hope to see in libraries and in schools.

Mock up for The Out Side

Along with Kao, we have Min Christensen, the nonbinary Danish illustrator/cartoonist who you might know from their comic Fail by Error, and David Daneman, publisher of comic anthologies like Launch PartyArt Block, and Big Mood. Julia Kaye, author of Super Late Bloomer and My Life in Transition will be writing the forward to the anthology.

Along with that talented group of creatives are the 16 trans and nonbinary artists who will be sharing their stories.
