We’ve chosen the best math toys and games that will help build the mathematical fundamentals for children at any age and skill level.

What if there was a game you could play with your kids that opens the door to a lifetime of wonders? That game is math, and everyone and everything in the universe plays it. If you make anything, be it with carpentry, coding, or baking, you’re playing the game of math. The toys and games on this list are strikingly different from one another, but they’re all avatars of the same vast game. I didn’t put the effort into math that it deserved when I was a kid, and it wasn’t until adulthood that I saw that math skills set you up for stronger problem-solving skills, more options in the job market, and defense against con artists. Math is everywhere, and as geek icon Jason Fox puts it in the comic strip FoxTrot, the more math you learn, the more math you see.

Introducing Math to Kids ?

Kids are natural mathematicians.  They want to use their growing math skills to understand the world, it’s just that many times the adults in their lives don’t know how to help them cultivate their interest in math. Games and play can be a lively way to build an interest in math.

Math Toys and Games For Any Age ?

While these math toys and games are listed by age, we know there’s a lot of variation in math skills and interest in mathematics among kids. You know best what your kids are ready for, so don’t hesitate to use your own judgment about which toys and games are a good fit for your family. (See Making Art With Parametric Equations for a math game to play with older kids.)

Age 4-6: Counting, Shapes and Measuring

Kids ages 4-6 learn the building blocks of math: recognizing and writing numbers, counting and sorting objects, and learning shapes. 4-6-year-olds are starting with addition and subtraction, first with manipulatives like Lego pieces and progressing to calculating in their heads.

zingo 1-2-3

Zingo 1-2-3 Number Bingo

This game teaches counting through the time honored method of Bingo. Players have to match numbered tiles with the numbers on their bingo card. When you win, you get to yell “Zingo!” What self respecting 4-6 year old doesn’t enjoy yelling?

clumsy thief

Clumsy Thief Junior

A Clumsy Thief has snuck onto the farm and mixed up everyone’s lunch! In this budget-friendly game, kids look through their hand of cards to find two cards that add up to 10. If another player has a card that will help you get to 10, you can snatch it! It’s a fast-paced game where the players steal cards in order to get to that all-important 10.

math monster scale

Math Monster Scale

A  cool manipulative in the form of a scale and weights decorated to look like funny monsters. The weight monsters have numbers printed on their bellies which kids can use to demonstrate basic math concepts like the 5 monster weighs as much as the 1 and 4 monsters combined.

Ticket to Ride First Journey

This game is a good jumping-on point for the popular Ticket to Ride series of board games. Ticket to Ride players compete to build train routes across the USA. Players have to count how many spaces their route has, and need to plan ahead to make sure they can complete their routes before a sibling or parent does. It’s beautifully made and comes with plastic train pieces that kids might invent new games around.

Ages 7-9: Multiplication and Division

Kids ages 7-9 are solidifying their addition and subtraction skills, and are branching out into multiplication and division. They learn place value for ones, tens, hundreds and so on. They also learn how to solve simple word problems, in other words, how to use math in the real world.

ghostbusters monopoly

Monopoly Ghostbusters Edition

Zoom around New York city buying Ghostbusting contracts (properties) and building Ghost Traps (houses) and Containment Units (hotels).  There are new rules that make it a little different from regular Monopoly: Ecto-1 spaces move you to specific spaces on the board (for a small fee) and Supernatural Entity spaces require you and another player to join forces to defeat the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man and his ilk. The game includes a battery-powered Ghost Trap card holder that makes sounds from the movies to get you further into a Ghostbusting frame of mind.

Proof! Math Game

This game will give your family practice in adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing in your heads. Players start with a grid of nine numbered cards. Players then find equations using the cards and shout the result. (Again with the yelling!). If you can prove that your equation is correct, you get to keep the cards that made up your equation. You can easily adjust the challenge level of Proof! by changing what cards are in the deck.

Math Dice Jr.

MathDice Junior

This game improves arithmetic and problem-solving skills. Players take turns rolling a 12-sided target dice and five six-sided scoring dice. Players then combine the numbers on the scoring dice to reach the number on the target dice. You then get to move one space on a scoring track for every dice you used to reach the target number. The first player to reach the end of the scoring track wins and earns bragging rights!

Zeus on the Loose

Zeus On the Loose

If your kids like Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson books,  they might also like this Greek mythology-themed card game. In the game, Zeus has escaped from Mount Olympus! Players can catch Zeus by playing cards whose numbers add up to a multiple of 10. Watch out for Zeus’ occasionally estranged wife Hera though. Her card is the most powerful one in the game, but she’ll turn against you just as soon as help you.

Ages 10-12: Fractions and Decimals

10-12 year olds learn how to add and subtract two, three, four and five digit numbers. They add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions, work with decimals, and make change. They also solve more complex word problems involving money and time.

Adsumudi Math Game

Adsumudi is a customizable arithmetic game. Adsumudi plays like Proof! in that players use information on the cards to find equations. Each hexagonal card has a number in the center and five numbers around the edge. Players must use the numbers on the edge of the card to form an equation that equals the number in the center. Each card has a difficulty level and easy, medium, hard, and monstrously hard solutions, giving you a lot of different options to explore.

Prime Climb

Prime Climb focuses on arithmetic and factoring. The goal of the game is to get both of your pawns to the 101 space on the center of the colorful board. To move, roll the dice and add, subtract, multiply or divide the number of the space your pawn is by the number you rolled, and move your pawn to the space with the resulting number. Like Parcheesi or Sorry!, if another player’s pawn is already on that space, you bump them back to the start, no doubt accompanied by much humorous wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Yahtzee game

Yahtzee

A classic and an excellent value to boot! Yahtzee players roll five dice to score points with strategic combinations. Get five of a kind and you can yell “Yahtzee”! ( Yelling FTW!) Yahtzee involves quite a bit of strategy and there are tons of variant rules available to keep the game interesting.

Ages 13 and Up: Getting Into the Good Stuff With Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus

Starting with Algebra, middle and high school students move on to the fields of Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus. These fields are the foundation for careers in STEM.

Five Tribes

The Sultan has died, and the players are scrambling for control of the city of Naqala! This strategy game offers a lot of opportunities to hone math skills. Players bid on turn order, buy and sell resources and move members of the five tribes around the board to earn victory points. Players have to plan ahead if they want to wield the power of the mighty Djinn!

Harry Potter House Cup Competition

Deploy your favorite (and least favorite, in the cases of Crabbe and Goyle) characters to the library, the professor’s office and the classrooms to learn magic lessons. Use math to keep track of the resources you need to meet challenges and level up characters. The game comes with some great props, including a plastic stand that evokes the house point counter in the movies. It is very satisfying to yell “10 points for Slytherin!” to the consternation of your offspring.

Power Grid board game

Power Grid

In Power Grid, players simulate building a power grid to supply electricity to cities in the USA or Germany. Players use math to bid on power plants, buy resources to fuel them, and determine the best configuration for their growing power grid. As the game continues, more efficient power plants become available, so players need to reason mathematically to get the best value for their pretend money.

Set

Set is a classic with a lot going on. In Set, players compete to identify sets of cards that either have three of the same or three different numbers, colors, shapes, or shadings. Set is a great introduction to the mathematical discipline of combinatorics. The question “how many cards do you need to lay down to guarantee a set?” has a complex answer that might ignite a lifelong interest in math!

How Disney’s ‘Real’ Lightsaber Could Work

https://nerdist.com/article/how-disneys-real-lightsaber-might-work-patent-tape-measure/

Disney Parks held a press event recently to share an update about Avengers Campus at Disneyland Resort’s opening date. At the end of the event, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products chairman Josh D’Amaro revealed a special tease: a “real” lightsaber. While I did attend this virtual press event I had looked away because it sounded like a business-as-usual wrap up. Then I saw other reporters sharing reports of the lightsaber on Twitter. D’Amaro pulled out the lightsaber, turned it on, and said, “It’s real.”

The blade extended from a hilt like the lightsabers we see in Star Wars. But presumably without the ability to slice anything or anyone into pieces. Attending reporters weren’t permitted to record the press event so no footage of this lightsaber exists. Yet.

Luke holding a lightsaber

Lucasfilm

Walt Disney Imagineering portfolio creative executive Scott Trowbridge confirmed after the event that the lightsaber was real. Not CGI. Disney’s not sharing photos or video yet. A Disney official told me the project is in early concept exploration. The lightsaber represents the creativity of Walt Disney Imagineering Research and Development. It’s not ready for theme parks yet but perhaps one day. For now D’Amaro was really just showcasing the possibilities.

And while various companies, licensed and otherwise, make some gorgeous replica lightsabers—including Disney—none of them capture the retractable nature of the ones in the Star Wars galaxy. Ahead of the opening of Disney Parks’ Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Disney reportedly filed a patent for the most realistic version of a lightsaber yet. The most simple way to explain the patent is that the inside of the hilt houses a motorized tape measure of sorts that is wrapped around lighting.

After Disney’s “real” lightsaber reveal, VR/AR/web developer Ben Ridout looked back at that patent (which we saw at The Verge). He created an animation demonstrating how the lightsaber might work. He used a tape measure to illustrate the mechanism. Essentially, you’d push a button to raise a cylinder and, tada, you have a lightsaber.

We’re obviously boiling this down to basics. Innovating this technology when we’ve had decades of not quite authentic lightsabers is a huge step. And we hope Disney unveils this in the near-ish future. After the last year, don’t we all deserve the coolest possible toy?

Disneyland’s Expansion and Vaccine updates

https://www.thenerdelement.com/2021/03/25/disneylands-expansion-and-vaccine-updates/

Hi everyone! Today I have some big updates that I want to share with y’all! So, let’s get started, shall we?! So, at Disneyland Resort, they have announced that they will be planning to have a major new expansion. Disney unveiled their new, groundbreaking expansion plans to the Disneyland Resort over the next several years. Appropriately calling the project Disneyland Forward, the company aims to work with the City of Anaheim to get approval on expanding the theme park, retail, dining, hotel, and parking offerings at the Disneyland Resort.

The long-term plans are causing a flurry of excitement among fans, but also a lot of questions. Over recent years, the Disneyland Resort — encompassing Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure Park, Downtown Disney Shopping District, and three hotels — received sprinkles of pixie dust that breathed life back into the world-famous resort.

In the last decade, groundbreaking experiences and lands like Cars Land, Pixar Pier, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge all made their home at the Disneyland Resort. These instantly became fan favorites — despite how much it hurt saying goodbye to the Hollywood Tower of Terror — and Disney and the countless Imagineers behind the scenes always create more magic out of well-lived experiences, especially with Avengers Campus opening later this year.

Now, Disneyland is boldly stepping into the future and expanding further outside their two current parks with the goal of creating highly immersive new theme park experiences at the Southern California theme park property. Disney confirms that they need to work with local officials in order to reach an agreement to allow the company to bring more experiences to the Disneyland Resort. Disney says that they need more flexibility in order to bring new offerings to the existing property, rather than remove current ones.

“We want to bring more Disney investment to Anaheim. However, this simply isn’t possible under current inflexible planning restrictions unless we remove and replace treasured rides and attractions in our Parks today.”  They are considering adding some new attractions, restaurants, and some shops. It includes the new retail and dining at Down Town Disney, Peter Pan, Tangled, Frozen, and Zootopia. Looking again at the plans above, Disneyland does not have a massive land to work with. However, the areas highlighted in orange and blue (corresponding with each theme park) look large enough to fit a new land or two. This doesn’t mean that they are potentially making the third gate, but they are trying to make Disneyland more exciting and magical for guests to enjoy. This plan will take place in 2023 at the Anaheim Convention Council. Remember, Disneyland will never be complete!

The California Governor Gavin Newsom who is facing a recall has announced over twitter that all Californians 16 & up eligible for COVID-19 vaccine on April 15th. Adults over the age of 50 can make their appointments starting on April 1st.

So basically, Disneyland is really making good progress with their vaccines and I’m glad that they are doing the expansion of the parks! What about you guys?! What is your opinion about this information?!

This information came from the news I looked at today.

What do you guys think about the whole information!

I would love to hear some comments, thoughts, opinions, concerns, or questions down below!

Stay tuned for more updates.

Sports For Nerdy Kids

http://nerdywithchildren.com/sports-for-nerdy-kids/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=sports-for-nerdy-kids

“The Games are just a nice, positive way to build friendships, camaraderie and, of course, self-esteem.”— Greg Louganis

Not all nerdy kids fit the stereotype of the scrawny, anti-social recluse. There is a growing category of people who enjoy many of the typical nerd-related activities, but also have a penchant for engaging in competitive sports. If you’ve got a sporty nerd in your life, or you’re looking for a sport to involve your child in that’s more fitting for his or her activity level, here are some ideas to get them involved in the world of sports.

Tennis ?

Beginning the list with one of the most active, yet still nerdy sports, Tennis is an excellent sport to get any cerebral kid involved in. It’s no wonder that many self-professed nerds play professional tennis. While tennis is foremost a great cardiovascular exercise, it is also a battle of wits, forcing one to outsmart their opponent and read their movements. An excellent sport for developing crucial brain training while also getting a full workout, Tennis makes for an excellent choice for the more active nerdy kids looking to break into the world of sports.

Here’s a list of everything your nerdling needs to get started playing tennis:

tennis racket for kids head brand

Tennis Racket

This tennis racket is listed specifically for beginners, making it perfect for your kids’ tennis starter kit. Depending on the age of your child, you’ll want to make sure that the size of the racket is correct. This specific racket is a 23″ for ages 6-8, but this brand offers sizes from 19″ to 25″. This racket also boasts a youth-friendly head light balance to help reduce vibration and increase stability when hitting the ball. Pst, this listing also includes a table to help you match up your kids’ age with their ideal racket and tennis ball size.

Tennis Balls

The size of the ball that your kid will play with depends on their age as well. These are qst 60 (for 9-10 year old’s). Don’t worry, they come in other sizes. Why the orange? This allows your youngling to track spin while they’re still getting used to controlling the ball.

Ping Pong ?

For those who aren’t quite into tennis, but still want a similar experience, ping pong can provide. Ping Pong is widely considered the nerd-sport of choice, as almost any kid who doesn’t necessarily identify with sporty players has hit a ping pong ball sometime in their life. Setup is easy, usually in a basement or at a rec center, and ping pong can actually get hectic at times, leading to quite the workout. Ping Pong is great for developing hand-eye coordination, and hey, it’s an Olympic sport, so your kid could be an Olympian if they stick with it long enough!

Check out our favorite Ping Pong Picks for Kids:

This Table Tennis for beginners book is great for kids that need a bit more instructions, or just to fuel their obsession further.

Fencing ?

fencing sword mask protective gear person playing fencing foil

This one I admit to having a slight bias for. I took a few years of fencing back in college, and I loved it. What’s more cool than playing a sport with swords? Fencing is actually quite the physically demanding activity, but not so much so that there’s a large barrier for entry if your child isn’t the most physically fit. Fencing relies primarily on planning, forethought, and anticipating your opponent’s movements. It’s a sport of agility and reaction, which are often the physical traits that nerdy sports hopefuls have. Smaller people also benefit from being a more difficult to hit target, though it doesn’t hurt to have both reach and flexibility.

To put a fine point on it, here are a few Fencing related items we love:

toy swords crossing each other wooden

Toy Hardwood Fencing Sword Set

Made from an assortment of different types of wood, this set of fencing swords are perfect for your aspiring fencer that isn’t quite old enough for a real fencing rapier yet. Note that these are not meant for competition and are more for play than real fencing.

saber fencing for kids that every parent must read book

Saber Fencing For Kids Book

This book introduces and describes all levels of fencing techniques and was written by an Olympic-level fencing coach! This book is great for both kids and parents and covers some serious topics in a fun way. Please note that this book is specifically for Saber Fencing rather than Foil Fencing.

fencing sword mounted on wall

Fencing Sword Wall Mount

These wall mounts work for foils, epees and sabers. A fencing family needs somewhere to display their accouterments and these sword mounts are perfect.

Paintball ?

kids dressed in camo leaning over rocks ready to play paintball

However, if you’re looking for a more head-on, action-packed sort of sport for your kids, paintball might be the answer. Apart from likely having their interest the moment it’s suggested, paintball is actually a very safe, controlled sports environment that helps develop strategy, hand-eye coordination, and teamwork. There’s quite a bit of thought and planning that goes into a successful paintball match, making it the perfect solution to someone looking to add intellect into their sport. And, considering that near-obsessive attention to technical details is a hallmark of the nerdy disposition, paintball has a lot to offer. Take a minute to search YouTube for videos of paintball aficionados going into endless details of their marker’s various custom components if you aren’t convinced. If paintball is outside your comfort zone, laser tag may be a more appropriate choice that still maintains many of the traits that make paintball enjoyable and great for exercise.

We’ve painted the picture for you, take a look at these paintball favorites:

paintball kids goggle red mask

Paintball Kids Goggle

Your nerdling needs plenty of safety gear for their paintball journey. These paintball goggles are stylish and ASTM/CE certified for safety. Features a visor for shade, adjustable strap for best fit and a chin strap for smaller heads!

four multicolored neck gaiter covering

Galaxy Neck Gaiter for Kids

Aside from being stylish, a neck gaiter is a great buy for your aspiring paintball star. These will keep the dust out of your child’s mouth and nose during play. These colorful gaiters are one size fits most and can also double as protection from the wind and cold weather.

two fake paintball guns with masks and goggles and ammo in boxes 1000 rounds 2 sets

SplatMaster Duel Kit

This duel kit is a great option for kids who aren’t quite old enough to go to the local paintball field. These paintball guns don’t require CO2 and are spring-powered. Boasting two pairs of safety goggles, 2 paintball guns, and 2 cases of 1000 rounds of ammo, your two kids or you and your kid can enjoy pelting each other with colorful pods.

Ultimate (Frisbee) ?

Similar to football or soccer, Ultimate is played by two teams on a field, using a Frisbee as the equipment. If you’re looking for a sport for your kid that’s similar, but isn’t nearly as full contact or as potentially hazardous as the above sports, Ultimate might be a good choice. Ultimate is recognized as a World Games sport, so there’s even a competition aspect to the game, if your child is a competitive player.

If none of these appeal to you or your child, or even if physical exercise is not an option, E-sports may be what you’re looking for. E-sports is a rapidly growing and increasingly popular sport almost entirely occupied by nerds. Many video game genres are recognized by the E-sport community, including real-time strategy games, first-person shooters, and MOBAs (multiplayer online battle arenas). E-sports share many of the positive development traits of video games, such as coordination, response time, and critical thinking, while also adding a valuable team play dynamic, as virtually all E-sports are played on teams. Throw in the fact that multiple world-level tournaments are held with lofty cash prizes, and you’ve got a fantastic developing sport for your child.
