Happy Independence Day, AFROnerdists!  Listen to the latest installment of Afronerd Radio’s The Grindhouse show airing this Sunday at 6 p.m. (eastern) on the BTalk 100 internet broadcasting platform. Check out the latest musings of your Grindhouse hosts, The “Uncanny” Daryll B. and Dburt aka “The Afronerd,” as they discuss the following topics: unfortunately, we had a preempted Mid Week episode and we couldn’t dissect last week’s BET Awards, so we’ll get into a belated analysis tonight;  comedian/actor, Bill Cosby is released from prison after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned his sex assault conviction and the Black (and other) communities are divided; Cosby’s announcement also caused problems for his former TV wife, Phylicia Rashad and her tenure as the Dean of Fine Arts at Howard University;  Dburt discovers that the “godmother” of the Grunge music genre was a Black woman by the name of Tina Bell:

And another blerd centric show bites the dust….HBO’s fairly popular Lovecraft Country gets canceled after one season and fans are understandably angry and bewildered;  more on DC’s new (and of color) Mr. Miracle comic series;  The Roots’ (and The Tonight Show) drummer, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson sheds light on Black culture circa 1969 via his new Hulu documentary, Summer of Soul:

And lastly, Ed Boon’s NetherRealm Studios is officially ending DLC for Mortal Kombat 11 in order to focus on future VG projects.  Does that mean a Marvel, DC, or crossover game is in the works?

Matt Murdock: The Realest Martyr Alive!

https://blacknerdproblems.com/matt-murdock-the-realest-martyr-alive/

BNP has repeatedly put you on to the fact that Matt Murdock is the trillest hero out chyea. Chip Zdarsky’s current run has been straight flames. Writers continue to come correct when they step up to write Daredevil and I’ve been loving Chip’s take on the Man without Fear. He showed us why Daredevil is the most lethal, yet morally responsible street level hero doin it, and why his arch nemesis Kingpin is still the most dangerous villain lurking in these crime infested streets or sitting proudly in the Mayor’s chair.

Two panels, Spider-man visiting Daredevil

Zdarsky also penned one of the best angles of the early issues, involving the classic idea of vigilantism: who gets to uphold the law and who is above it. In an extremely well drawn scene, the homie Spider-Man pulls up on Matt Murdock to keep it real after Daredevil murdered someone. He essentially tells him to hang up the cleats, respectfully speaking. Daredevil disappears, Fisk becomes Mayor, sparking a wild series of events that brings the best out of everyone in the city, and residents of Hell’s Kitchen in particular.

Marvel at the Martyr

More recently, Matt Murdock has been paying for his mistakes in the form of a jail cell and assassination attempt. He had chance after chance to beat the case but decided to become be the martyr superheroes need right now. Murdock believed hero’s needed to see someone holding themselves fully accountable for the slip ups and transgressions, in order to make this vigilante world a fair and balanced one.

Daredevil in court, accepting his prison sentence.

Real talk, I love that Chip is sticking to his guns with this martyrdom decision. Murdock has had chances to escape prison, but keeps making the decision to show everyone that hero’s aren’t above the law. He could’ve walked out the door when Knull invaded but instead, he zapped the symbiote from his brain and body then went to therapy. Freedom could’ve been the sweetest gift after some undercover prison investigator work but cha boy is determined to serve his 2 year sentence and it’s the most admirable shit I’ve seen in a hot minute.

If folks Want To Pop Off ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Remember when I mentioned an assassination attempt? Yeah, I was talking about the warden. The slimeball, prison plantation pedaling piece of shit got Murdock jumped by half the prison, poked up and left for dead. Of course, we knew he wasn’t dead but it was nice to see the stakes get raised because we would’ve never gotten this series of panels and BARZ.

Three panels. Two guards lead Murdock into the warden's office.

LOOOOLLLL Mans pulled up spittin the cold hard FAX! Daredevil said, “I know you’re tryna fade the kid witcha dusty ass Oscar the Grouch colored button down” to the warden’s face, because fuck it at that point right? And Matty my boy wasn’t done there!

3 panels of the fight scene between Daredevil, the prison guards and the warden.

Come Through, Murdock

Nope.

One word. One word was all that was needed to set the tone of this altercation. One word was all that was needed to properly convey how screwed the warden felt in this interaction. Then the equalizing one liner?? “You thought you was gettin special treatment?? You thought you wouldn’t catch these same hands your lackeys caught?!” It’s so beautifully paced and sets up the cherry-on-top panel that reminds readers of how badass and terrifying this Matt Murdock can be.

3 panels of Matt Murdockl in prison, threatening the Warden
It’s the sadistic smirk for me!

The Realest

Daredevil may have put himself behind bars, but he truly believes he’s setting a good example by doing so. If they see someone so prominent fall from grace, they’ll become more careful on their superhero patrols. They’ll think twice about how far they’re willing to go. But Matt Murdock is also the realest homie in tights and will bust your head to the white meat, no matter what your professional title is. Daredevil stay ready to put the paws on anyone needed, just the way God intended, and I couldn’t be happier about that!

The United States of Captain America #1 Review

https://blacknerdproblems.com/the-united-states-of-captain-america-1-review/

Writer: Christopher Cantwell and Josh Trujillo / Artist: Dale Eaglesham and Jan Bazaldua / Marvel Comics

I was today years old when I learned that Steve Rogers cleans his SHIELD with baking soda, salt, and vinegar like he was cleaning a cast iron pan. However, that’s just a footnote as writers Christopher Cantwell and Josh Trujillo bring us the first issue of The United States of Captain America. Teased for months, this book is set to bring together all four of the people who have once held the Shield, along with introducing a few new folks around the country taking up the mantle.

The United States of Captain America #1 starts off strong and there is a lot to like from this first issue. The premise follows the same beats as many great political thrillers, playing on the intrigue of unraveling the book’s mysterious situation. Finding out who wants Cap and the newfound network of Captain Americas dead and why will be one of the book’s main draws. The other draw will obviously be seeing Steve and Sam travel across the country to meet the different people taking up the mantle of Captain America.

The opening pages of The United States of Captain America #1 in particular work very well because it sets the tone for the series and gives readers a deep look into the head of Steve Rogers and how he feels about the country he represents. Books like these always work well when they pit Steve’s ideals against modern-day America. However, we are all familiar with Steve Rogers and his complex relationship with America. What I hope to see is more from other characters like Sam Wilson, John Walker, and Bucky, especially since their time and experience as Cap was vastly different from Steve’s.

The United States of Captain America #1

Readers are going to be interested in the Cap of the week more than anything. The backup story does a great job of further fleshing out these characters and showing us how their experience with America is very different from Steve and why he inspires them. Aaron Ficher is the first of many we will meet to take up the mantle of Captain America. It’s smart for the writers to start with him. He’s likable, his story is interesting, and he represents a different age of Americans and their struggles. I also like the design of his Captain America gear, which really nails down the homemade and everyman feel of his character.

The United States of Captain America is hitting all the right notes. A political character like Captain America is always a tough one to nail. It has yet to be seen if all the writers on this book will treat the subject matter and message it’s trying to convey with care. However, I’ll say that the enjoyable first issue makes this a book to watch.

8.4 Track Stars out of 10
