Truly, it has been a rough year for manga and anime fans as we lost Akira Toriyama earlier this year in March. The prolific creator was only sixty-eight years old and was still actively working not just in the manga industry (on Dragon Ball Super illustrated by Toyotarou) but with animation projects like Dragon Ball DAIMA and Sand Land as well. The news shocked the world as Dragon Ball, Toriyama’s greatest series– is a globally loved, and the mangaka still is sorely missed. Dragon Ball DAIMA appears to be his final work and almost feels like a throwback to the era of classic Dragon Ball with much silliness and wonder about.


What Do We Know So Far?

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Akira Toriyama’s original manga, which launched the Dragon Ball anime franchise, legendary studio Toei Animation brings fans a brand-new adventure. Dragon Ball DAIMA, the upcoming original anime series based on a new Dragon Ball story and characters from creator Akira Toriyama, will be available to stream with subtitles on Crunchyroll starting October 11 in the United States, Canada, Latin America including Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, and Southeast Asia, followed by new weekly subtitled episodes simulcast with the Japanese TV broadcast.

Dragon Ball DAIMA: Due to a conspiracy, Goku and his friends are turned small. What sort of adventure awaits Goku, Supreme Kai, and the new characters Glorio and Panzy in this unknown world, the “Demon Realm”?

Dragon Ball DAIMA is directed by Yoshitaka Yashima (key animator, Dragon Ball Z: Cooler’s Revenge) and Aya Komaki (series director, One Piece) together with series composition and scenario by Yuko Kakihara and animation character design by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru

Music, Legacy, and More?

Of note, the series features the opening theme song “Jaka Jaan” composed by Grammy Award-winning artist Zedd with support from C&K, the singer-songwriting duo of CLIEVY and KEEN, who also provided vocals.  Lyrics are by Yukinojo Mori, best known for the Dragon Ball franchise songs “CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA” and “Limit Break x Survivor.” This song and the powerhouse collaboration behind it mark a new page in Dragon Ball history. Zedd will also be producing the ending song “’NAKAMA’ by ZEDD feat. AI,” whose lyrics were written and sung by the artist AI.

Dragon Ball DAIMA was revealed to the world last October to thunderous applause at the Dragon Ball Special Panel during New York Comic Con 2023. This new episodic series celebrates the birth of the global Dragon Ball phenomenon— commemorating the 40th anniversary of the original manga created by Akira Toriyama that first launched in 1984 in Shueisha’s “Weekly Shonen Jump.” Since then, it has sold an astounding 260 million copies worldwide and counting. 

Produced by Toei Animation, the Dragon Ball anime franchise has achieved tremendous global success—taking its place in mainstream pop culture and boasting a multi-generational fan base. With the addition of Dragon Ball DAIMA, the franchise now spans six episodic series, including Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball Z Kai, and Dragon Ball Super, and 21 feature films as well as numerous mobile and video games, a trading card game, and an ever-expanding catalog of licensed merchandise and location-based entertainment.

Amassing near 1M followers across TikTok and Instagram, Taylor doesn’t just showcase fashion; she uses her platform to inspire other Black women to embrace financial independence through >her collaboration with Target’s Future Collective?

Creators like Naylor  are part of a growing trend of Black digital entrepreneurs who are turning their content into commerce. Black entrepreneurs account for 17% of TikTok’s global creators, but their influence is immeasurable when it comes to fashion and beauty trends. What sets them apart is their ability to build not just followings but brands—and they’re doing it all while breaking down systemic barriers in an industry that hasn’t always been inclusive.

Black creators have been able to tap into TikTok’s algorithm and viral nature to grow their audiences exponentially. In addition to these collaborations, TikTok creators are using their >Kia Marie, known as @thenotoriouskia, is a multi hyphenated creative, who is redefining the parameters of fashion entrepreneurship and showing the industry that Black creators aren’t just content creators—they are business owners. In 2020 she co-founded Kontent Queens, a platform dedicated to empowering creators of color to have success and longevity in the social media economy. She is currently the host of Sneaker Fiends – a series highlighting women in sneaker culture. Although Kia is known for being a creator, she has used her industry expertise to be a consultant for Fortune 500 companies and has worked with numerous renowned brands such as HBOmax, Target, American Express, the Brooklyn Nets, and HP.

Black creators are also revolutionizing how fashion is perceived by pushing forward narratives that celebrate diversity and inclusivity. They are using their platforms to advocate for authentic representation in the industry, shifting away from Eurocentric beauty standards and embracing the full spectrum of Black culture. From natural hair to Afrocentric prints, creators are introducing global audiences to >MSL Group found that Black creators were responsible for initiating 30% of fashion and beauty trends on TikTok, but their earnings from these trends lag significantly behind their non-Black counterparts. This inequity has prompted many creators to take control of their own narrative and entrepreneurial futures. They are diversifying how they monetize their platforms through e-commerce, affiliate marketing, and direct-to-consumer businesses. Black TikTok creators are driving traffic, creating trends, and turning their influence into wealth—on their own terms.

With millions of views per video, these creators are setting the pace for fashion’s next big trends. The speed at which a trend can go viral on TikTok is unmatched, and Black creators have mastered this dynamic. They are not just tapping into existing trends but creating them. Their ability to combine cultural references, personal style, and business savvy allows them to dominate fashion on the platform.

In addition, their impact extends beyond digital. Black creators have been recognized by traditional fashion outlets, with some creators sitting front row at shows during New York Fashion Week and even consulting on designs for major labels. This level of access and influence is a testament to how Black entrepreneurs are reshaping an industry that has often marginalized them.

The rise of creators is reshaping the fashion industry from the ground up. By merging their entrepreneurial spirit with digital influence, they are making the fashion world more inclusive, representative, and accessible for everyone. Whether they are collaborating with major brands, launching their own fashion lines, or advocating for sustainability and inclusivity, these creators are building legacies that extend beyond their screens.

As the fashion industry continues to evolve, one thing is clear: Black creators aren’t just participants in the fashion conversation—they are leading it.

At New York’s vivacious club, the Georgia Room, red light >Edvin Thompson, drew inspiration from his childhood and childhood nickname, “SHAUNIE,” which is the title of the collection.

Jamaica is his homeland, and he draws much of his inspiration from there. Caribbean house beats play in the background of the presentation, and the Jamaican flag colors >Theophilio is indeed a luxury brand.

Other standout pieces that caught our eye included a velour coat paired with matching pants, a very short white slip dress worn with a large Theophilio belt, and a leopard print asymmetrical dress that billowed at the train as the model walked down the runway. The nods to “Shaunie,” a past and present self of the designer, were seen on a tank top and short cowl-necked dress featuring imagery of a child, possibly the designer, over a hazy background of reds and blues. More playful pieces hit the runway like a fully sequined green tank top and extra extra small shorts with a smiley face print, a multi-font printed long flowing dress in orange, yellow, and green ombre, and a short, long-sleeve button-down dress with flared sleeves with the same font print. Accessories included oversized shoulder bags in yellow and dark blue, and leopard print oversized newsboy cap.

To close the show, the highly sought after supermodel Alton Mason walked down the runway in a pair of textured white pants, no shirt, and a feathered headpiece, most likely signaling the importance of Carnival in Caribbean culture. Thompson’s show also included signature pieces featuring the brand’s “I Heart Theophilio” motif on a hoodie for the upcoming brisk weather. As the finale walk-through concluded and the designer made his way down the runway to celebrate his labor of love, it was inspiring to see his culture be uplifted in a way that wasn’t gimmicky, but true to his design codes.
