Just in case you wanted to have a chill, non-rage-inducing Friday, the universe heard your plea and roundly ignored it with the breaking news, first reported by Deadline, that Harvey Weinstein is moving to have the sexual assault cases against him dismissed due to the D.A. mishandling evidence.
The motion filed reads:
“It is respectfully requested that the Court examine all the legal instructions given to the Grand Jury and that the Court give particular scrutiny to the instruction regarding how the Grand Jury must evaluate the evidence for each crime separately. For instance, the prosecutors must instruct the Grand Jury that it could not consider any of the evidence relating to the criminal sexual act charges when deciding whether Mr. Weinstein committed the rape charges. And vice versa. A failure to properly instruct the Grand Jury regarding this matter would constitute an error so substantial that it would render the Grand Jury proceedings legally defective requiring a dismissal of the entire indictment.”
More recently, emails were released that allege, in the prosecutor’s words, “a long-term, consensual, intimate relationship.” These emails detail conversations between one of Weinstein’s accusers and Weinstein over the course of four years, from 2013 to 2017 that were pleasant and cordial; one email says that the accuser wrote “I love you, always do” but that she was tired of feeling like a booty call with a smiley face.
The #MeToo movement has been a powerful force for change in Hollywood, but if Weinstein’s charges are dismissed that will strike a blow against the movement itself. Many of the men named by the movement—such as Jeffrey Tambor and Johnny Depp—have seen their careers rebound after a brief period of punishment. If the case is dropped, then the movement will suffer a setback that it will struggle to recover from.
It will also set a dangerous precedent that men can get away with anything. Weinstein’s accusers have nothing to gain by making false claims, and many have come forward with their stories. For an email exchange between a woman and one of the most powerful men in Hollywood who had control over whether her career would continue or not to now come under the spotlight suggests this is an important legal moment for the #MeToo movement. This case simply cannot be dismissed. It can’t go away.
There is a lot of motivation to make sure Weinstein sees time behind bars for his alleged actions, which are alleged to have spanned a considerable period of time and affected many women. These legal filings read more like desperation as Weinstein faces prison time. However, it is still frustrating to see this happen, and if the case is dismissed, it will be a downright tragedy and a major setback for the #MeToo movement. Each year Awesome Con, Washington, D.C.’s very own comic book/sci-fi/pop-culture convention is getting bigger and better, attendance wise and guest wise. With big name guests like John Boyega (Star Wars & Pacific Rim), Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead & Guardians of the Galaxy), and Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy & Blade Runner 2049), just to name a few, the Smithsonian hosting their very own FUTURE-CON, and Netflix coming through to promote their own version of the sci-fri classic, Lost in Space, the convention is definitely gaining vibes reminiscent of San Diego International Comic Con.
The biggest highlights of the con for me personally were John Boyega’s Q/A and the Science of Pacific Rim panel, especially with all the in-depth research the production team did to make the jaegers and kaiju realistic. First off, this quick Blerd blast may be biased simply because of the venue where we reviewed the latest Tom Cruise umpteenth (ok, ok it's the sixth!) Mission Impossible franchise film....Fallout. This was my second time checking out a flick at the vanglorious cineaste haven, The Alamo Drafthouse located in heavily gentrified Planet Brooklyn. One can never underestimate the appeal of watching an edge of your (high back) seat spy thriller while dining on a brisket burger and imbibing on an imported spirit of your choice. Was the film formulaic and stunt driven? Yes.....of course, Was it another IWMM (Impossible White Man Movie)? Why, yes....it was. BUT....I'm far more forgiving of the aforementioned Hollywood formula, having checked out a preceding IBMM (you can guess this acronym) sequel, Equalizer 2 starring Denzel Washington. In a current movie landscape that is replete with CGI laden fare (we're not complaining....it's just an observation), the "old standard" spy/action thriller still holds up smashingly. And let me not be remiss in failing to pay homage to the classics-the iconic 60s TV series that showcased such Hollywood favorites as Peter Graves, Leonard Nimoy, Martin Landau, Greg Morris, Lesley Ann Warren and Barbara Bain. Undoubtedly, due to Mr. Cruise's oft talked about eccentricities, I might have actually seen only one (now two) of the MI films from the two decades old plus franchise. And then compound THAT with the classic series, its a tough hill to climb (that the actor appears to be quite adroit in handling). But after MI:6, I think it's time for a personal filmography retrospective. And then there are those classic TV episodes...
