Will Doctors No Longer Be Able To Use Abortions During Emergency Medical Situations? Andrew Harnik / Staff / Getty Images By Rayna Reid Rayford ·Updated April 30, 2024

For the second time in one month, an abortion case has gone before the Supreme Court. A key issue in the case revolves around whether or not doctors in Idaho are able to both comply with the state’s abortion ban and the federal law requiring them to deliver emergency care for patients. The justices are deciding if doctors will be able to use abortions during emergency situations.

In the case at hand, the Biden administration filed a lawsuit after Roe v. Wade was overturned and the Defense of Life Act became law in 2022. The Idaho law states that “anyone who performs an abortion is subject to criminal penalties, including up to five years in prison. Health care professionals found to have violated the law can lose their professional licenses.”

The second abortion case before the high court this term revolves around access to the medication abortion pill, mifepristone.

In Idaho, the near total ban only allows abortions when a pregnant mother’s life needs to be saved, “but not to prevent her health from deteriorating.”

But under federal law, the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), “when a patient goes to an emergency room with an urgent medical issue, hospitals must either provide treatment to stabilize the patient or transfer the patient to a medical facility that can, regardless of the patient’s ability to pay. It says that if a state law conflicts with the federal law, the federal law takes precedence.”

The justices are determining if the Idaho law is in violation of EMTALA, essentially deciding if doctors will be able to use abortions during emergency situations.

During oral arguments, Joshua Turner, Idaho’s attorney faced a barrage of questions around “whether the exception can also apply to a situation in which a woman has complications that pose a substantial health risk but not imminent death,” NBC News reports.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor questioned if Idaho’s ban prevented doctors from performing an abortion in instances “where a woman where a woman would otherwise lose an organ or have serious medical complications.” Turner answered in the affirmative, saying “Yes, Idaho law does say that abortions in that case aren’t allowed.”

But when conservative Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., chimed in with the assertion that these were all just hypotheticals situations, Justice Elena Kagan countered with the fact that “the hospital with the most advanced emergency room services in Idaho had needed to transfer six women to other states for emergency abortions so far this year.”

Experts are predicting that the ramifications of this case on reproductive care have the ability to go beyond Idaho into other states.

“People are going to die,” cautions, Pregnancy Justice’s legal director Karen Thompson. “They are going to be bleeding out in hospital rooms. They’re going to be dying from sepsis because doctors are not going to be able to make the choices that they need to make to give people the care that will save their lives in these emergency situations.”

Netflix Is Developing SCOOBY-DOO Live-Action Series

https://nerdist.com/article/scooby-doo-live-action-series-in-development-netflix-greg-berlanti/

Get ready to hop in the Mystery Machine again. Scooby-Doo is coming back to live-action, this time as a streaming series for Netflix. The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter. The series is the brainchild of producer Greg Berlanti, the man who was in charge of the DC Arrowverse on the CW, not to mention shows like The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina for Netflix. The project has a script-to-series commitment at Netflix, meaning if the streaming giant likes the script, it would trigger a straight-to-series order. It’s somewhat baffling why this is on Netflix and not Max, which owns the Scooby-Doo property.

The original Scooby-Doo animated characters.
Warner Bros. Animation

This is supposed to be a more dramatic take on the beloved animated show. We’re not really sure how that works, as the title character is a talking Great Dane. Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, who previously adapted Cowboy Bebop for Netflix and High Fidelity for Hulu, are developing the script. Scooby-Doo and his friends first came to live-action in film in 2002. That movie was a huge success at the time and spawned a sequel. While the implication is that the series is a reboot, we’d be lying if we said we didn’t want to see the original cast back together.

The original cartoon Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! cartoon first debuted in 1969, and has been around in some form as an animated property ever since. We’ve seen versions where all the ghosts the Mystery, Inc. gang chased were hoaxes. Later years saw the gang face off against literal monsters. Greg Berlanti did a great job with The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a more serious take on a goofy premise. So who knows, this may be amazing. We just hope there is a minimal amount of Scrappy-Doo in this version. We can let that pup stay in the kennel.

How To Manage Emotions In The Workplace

https://www.blackenterprise.com/how-to-manage-emotions-workplace/

Originally Published Sept. 18, 2014.

It’s happened to us all. Whether we admit it or not, we’ve all had the experience of getting our feelings hurt at work. A lot of times, our direct supervisor is usually the culprit. Sometimes, it’s our co-workers, but nonetheless, the experience is humiliating. Emotions are a touchy subject, mainly because we all like to act like we don’t have any or they don’t affect us. The truth is, as research shows, a majority of humans walk around with so much emotional baggage that, at any given point, a person could have a breakdown.

As a life coach, I like to connect with clients on an emotional level because it allows me—AND them—to see how deep emotions go. Moreover, it reveals that emotions are running the show whether we realize it or not. To be successful in business and life, you need to have a sense of emotional health and intelligence. Here, I provide some easy tips for how to process and manage emotions while at work.

Acknowledge.

The first step in processing emotions is experiencing an emotional trigger. Acknowledging, believe it or not, is one of the hardest stages in emotional processing. This is mainly because humans rarely like to admit that someone hurt their feelings. Furthermore, we don’t like to be that vulnerable. A practical example is taking a moment and saying to yourself or even out loud (quietly) that your emotions are triggered.

Identify.

Next, identify what exactly triggered the emotions. This takes time. You will need to take a moment to pinpoint exactly the moment you felt a certain way. Don’t overthink this stage. You must know with certainty what caused the shift. Identify the moment and write it down.

Name.

Name the emotion you feel. Being emotionally intelligent and having a proper emotional vocabulary is extremely important. We must be able to call something by name because it allows us to distinguish between emotions, creating a sense of power. Being able to say you feel marginalized is a lot more powerful than saying you feel hurt (too general). The more specific you can be when naming the emotion, the better your processing will be.

Review.

Go over the previous steps and make sure you are certain about what has taken place. This is key because after you review or examine, you have a moment of clarity that affirms how you feel or gives you a different perspective. This stage is vital because individuals too often fly off the handle, which leads to dire consequences. Take the time to review and reflect.

Action.

This is the stage where you decide what you’re going to do about what has happened and how you feel. Moreover, the action stage is where we decide to respond (always) to the situation. So, if this means you have to confront someone, you’ve taken the time to process and calm yourself down. You’ve also assessed the situation and have the clarity to proceed with your approach.

Remember, we have the ability to change not only our world but also the world as a whole. Be great!

Until next time, Pervis
