The father of Atatiana Jefferson, the woman who was fatally shot by a Fort Worth police officer while playing video games with her nephew, has passed away. According to USA Today, Marquis Jefferson died of a heart attack at Charlton Methodist Hospital yesterday (Nov. 9). Jefferson was 59-years-old.
“Please keep his family in your prayers and tonight make sure you hug and tell your loved ones how much you love them,” the family spokesperson Bruce Carter said in a statement.
Besides experiencing the pain of losing his daughter, Jefferson had filed for a temporary restraining order to gain control over Atatiana’s funeral arrangements from her aunt, Bonita Body, because he felt he didn’t have enough input. This led to her funeral being postponed until Body and Jefferson came to an agreement.
Officer Aaron Dean fatally shot Atatiana Jefferson on October 28th, 2019 while responding to a call that her door was open late at night. Dean shot Jefferson through a window of her home while she played video games with her 8-year-old nephew.
“We understand your frustration and disappointment,” Interim Police Chief Ed Kraus said during a news conference. “I, too, am frustrated and disappointed about what occurred, that officer’s actions. We never want an officer response to a call to result in the loss of life.”
Dean has since resigned from the police force and has been charged with murder.
Our condolences go out to the Jefferson family.
