Even as some states begin reopening the COVID-19 crisis is still reshaping this year’s big box office releases. Warner Bros. is the latest to studio to announce a change in their slate with both their big superhero sequel Wonder Woman 1984 and mysterious sci-fi spy thriller Tenet being delayed. Though in the case of the latter it’s only a move of two weeks…

According to Variety Warner Bros. has pushed Tenet back from its original July 17th date to July 31st. Which still seems a little soon to us, but Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group is clearly excited and had a surprise for fans. “It’s been longer than any of us could’ve imagined since we’ve seen a movie on the big screen, and to acknowledge Chris’ fans as we count down to Tenet’s opening day, we are also excited to offer his masterpiece Inception in theaters for its 10th anniversary on July 17.”

Yep, a rerelease of Inception will now open instead of Tenet which seems like a trial run for the studio of just how many people are willing to go into cinemas during the global pandemic. It’s also likely going to excite Nolan fans who think that Tenet might be sequel to the sci-fi mind bender. The other big news here is that Wonder Woman 1984 is moving back a hearty—and far healthier sounding—two months. It’s going from Aug 14th to Oct 2nd. This is the second delay for the movie from its original June 5th release date. Whether it will be the last move for the Patty Jenkins superhero flick is still to be seen.

Whatever happens next this is an important moment as many fans, critics, and movie business watchers have been using Tenet as a measuring stick for the summer 2020 box office. It’ll be interesting to see how Inception lands and whether WB commits to Tenet’s July release in the face of new spikes in corona virus cases across the country. And the world for that matter!
