Sundance Award-winning filmmaker Rashad Frett is finally bringing Ricky to theaters.
According to an IndieWire exclusive, Frett’s breakout film, which won the Directing Award at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, will receive a theatrical release on March 20, 2026. The film is taking the self-distribution route, with producers partnering with Blue Harbor Entertainment to help facilitate the release. Ricky will open in select cities, marking a true independent release with the filmmakers retaining full ownership of the film’s rights.

Black Girl Nerds reviewed Ricky during its Sundance premiere last year, where the film quickly emerged as one of the festival’s most emotionally gut wrenching narratives.
Starring Stephan James in a deeply affecting lead performance, Ricky tells the story of a man released from prison after serving a 15-year sentence for armed robbery and attempted murder committed when he was just 15 years old. The film immerses audiences in Ricky’s fragile mental state as he struggles to acclimate to life outside the confines of prison, navigating adulthood with little support and even fewer tools for survival.
Through Ricky’s journey, Frett’s film challenges viewers to confront the systemic failures of the American justice system, particularly its disregard for the mental health of formerly incarcerated individuals and its lack of meaningful preparation for reintegration, employment, and stability. The result is a poignant, emotionally driven narrative that lingers long after the credits roll.
In support of its release, Ricky is also launching a Kickstarter campaign aimed at expanding access to the film. The campaign offers audiences the opportunity to gift tickets to at-risk organizations and underserved communities, reinforcing the film’s commitment to impact beyond the screen.
The film also stars Sheryl Lee Ralph, Imani Lewis, Sean Nelson, Maliq Johnson, and Simbi Khali.
With its long-awaited theatrical debut finally on the horizon, Ricky stands as a powerful example of independent filmmaking that refuses to compromise its message or ownership and a film that demands to be seen.
