San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H transformed into a galactic launchpad as the cast and creators of Project Hail Mary took the stage to unveil their highly anticipated adaptation of Andy Weir’s best-selling novel. With director Phil Lord and Christopher Miller at the helm, and Ryan Gosling leading a cast that gave fans a dazzling first look at a sci-fi epic that’s as emotionally resonant as it is visually mind-blowing.

The film — equal parts survival thriller, buddy comedy, and cosmic mystery, follows Ryland Grace (Gosling), a schoolteacher-turned-astronaut who wakes up alone on a spacecraft light-years from Earth with no memory of how he got there. His mission: save humanity from extinction with the help of an unlikely alien ally named Rocky.

Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, known for their signature blend of genre-bending storytelling (The LEGO Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), told the Hall H crowd that Project Hail Mary is their “most personal film yet.”

Ryan Gosling, taking on the role of Ryland Grace, described the emotional complexity of waking up in space with the weight of Earth’s survival on his shoulders.

Fans got their first glimpse of Rocky, the alien character brought to life through a combination of groundbreaking puppetry and performance-capture technology.

The creative team emphasized their commitment to scientific realism, working closely with NASA consultants and Andy Weir himself to ensure the film balances thrills with plausibility.

The exclusive clip shown to Hall H had the audience buzzing: Ryland Grace waking up, disoriented, in a sterile spacecraft with no memory — surrounded by robotic arms and cryptic data scrolling across the walls. The moment he makes first contact with Rocky, their alien “conversation” plays out as a rhythmic exchange of tones, with subtitles helping decode the meaning.

The visuals were stunning, but the emotional beats landed even harder.

Project Hail Mary looks poised to be one of the most emotionally rich and visually ambitious sci-fi films in recent memory. With a dynamic cast, visionary directors, and a story that celebrates intellect, empathy, and cross-cultural friendship, it has the makings of a classic for a new era.

The film is set for release in March 20th 2026, but judging by the energy in Hall H, fans are already ready for liftoff.
