Nemesis Comin’ For You! – Resident Evil 3 Remake Review

The Resident Evil series has been on a roll over its last few installments. It was almost dead in the water after the universally panned 6, but stepping in the right direction with the Revelation titles, the surprise hit of 7, and the beloved remake of 2, Capcom seems to have figured out how to make a Resident Evil game fun and exciting again. Does this new installment continue the trend, or is this new REmake dead on arrival. Let’s find out in Resident Evil 3 Remake.

Resident Evil 3 takes place just before and during the events of Resident Evil 2. Jill Valentine has been hard at work trying to expose the Umbrella Corporation after the mansion incident of RE1. As the city begins to fall into chaos with the outbreak of the T-virus, Jill is attacked by the Nemesis, thus beginning decent into a hellish night. This game starts off with a bang, playing around with a haunting first-person view and then a harrowing action sequence to introducing your stalker for the entire game, the Nemesis. From start to finish, this game is gorgeous. While some fans of the first remake aren’t a fan of Jill’s new makeover, I think her new look fits her well, as well as her “over this sh*t” attitude dealing with Nemesis. Her quips are never over the top and come off pretty well written. Carlos, the Umbrella mercenary, looks good as well. It took me some time to get used to his wild mane but damn if Capcom’s engine doesn’t make hair look real.

Like the original 3 from 2, the remake does focus a lot more on action than its predecessor. It really works here to emphasize the looming threat of Nemesis and always kept me on the edge of my seat. However, the change in tone may turn off some of those you just got into Resident Evil through the remake of 2. It’s still creepy and scary but in a different way. With an emphasis on action, the game does seem to provide you with more ammo overall. But don’t take that for you can just run in guns blazing. If you aren’t careful, you’ll find yourself in a bad place.  What helps is the addition of the dodge button, also brought over form the original. Dodging an enemy… well it’s tricky. Getting the time down takes some practice, doing it wrong could literally throw you into the arms of a zombie instead of out of them. Once you do get it down, it feels great to action dodge and unload on your target.

I’ve seen a few complaints out there over the length of the game, and it will be a legit concern for some. Running roughly around 6 hours, RE3 does feel shorter than 2. Mainly because Carlos is part of Jill’s campaign rather than being his own. Also, with no “Side-B” scenario that changes up where you meet certain enemies and find items like that last game, it’ll feel shorter. What Capcom did to offset this was to include the multiplayer mode, Resistance. A 4-v-1 survival mode, you either play as a survivor, each with their own special skills who are trying to escape, or you play the mastermind and set traps and monsters to kill them. Honestly, I had fun with it. Getting a good team makes things exciting but too often you’ll get a team who doesn’t cooperate. And the mastermind is the most thrilling, but you’ll end up waiting in the queue a while to find a game. Again, it’s fun, but it’s definitely not the selling point of this game.

Overall, Resident Evil 3 Remake was fantastic. If you just got into RE with 2 or have been with the series for a long time, this is definitely a must play. Even if this is your first trip down zombie lane, it’s a fun worthwhile game. Highly recommended!
