Jif vs Gif peanut butters

The JM Smucker Company

In the latest weird food jift from the jods, Jif peanut butter has decided that they will be the ones to decide once and for all how “GIF” is pronounced. Thankfully they got it right.

You can now buy limited-edition jars of delicious Jif peanut butter labeled “Gif” peanut butter. And of course this push is in partnership with Giphy.

“We’re teaming up with GIPHY to put a lid on this decade-long debate and prove there is only one Jif… it’s creamy, delicious peanut butter, not a looping picture you can send to make friends and family laugh,” said Rebecca Scheidler, Vice President, Marketing of Jif. “So spread the word like Jif on bread—Jif is peanut butter, GIFs are animations!”

Giphy for their part agrees and has provided the internet with some interesting (and terrifying) gifs to celebrate the promotion.

We here are the Mary Sue (well most of us) are happy that Jif has finally come out on the side of right and the extremely correct assertion that “GIF” is correctly pronounced with a hard g. Because Graphic is part of the abbreviation and no one says “Christmas JIFT.” No, we don’t particularly care if the inventor of the GIF declared that it was to be pronounced “jif.” Some monsters transcend their creators.

So if you’re not allergic to peanuts and not to correct pronunciations, grab some!

Marvel Comics Gives X-MEN a Unique Anniversary Celebration

https://nerdist.com/article/marvel-comics-giant-sized-x-men-anniversary/

This year marks 45 years of the Uncanny X-Men as we know them today, with the release of  1975’s Marvel Comics’ Giant Size X-Men #1. And now, the folks at Marvel are celebrating this mutant milestone with a very special reproduction of this classic issue. And no, this is not just a reprint of an old comic on glossy paper. This is something far more unique and interesting. Some 37 different artists will re-create the issue page-by-page in their own art styles. They’ll work from the late Len Wein’s original script.

Marvel has released a trailer for this special issue, officially titled Giant-Size X-Men: Tribute to Wein & Cockrum, which you can view down below:

So why celebrate Giant Size X-Men #1 as much as the original ’60s debut? Although the X-Men were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby back in 1963, after the first couple of years the prolific duo left the title. Frankly, they were overwhelmed already creating books like Fantastic Four, Thor, and others. But without the superstar creative team, X-Men sales went into free fall. Despite several attempts to spice up the book with new artists and directions, nothing seemed to click with readers. In 1970, the book wound up cancelled.

But five years later, Marvel Comics editorial decided to revive the series with a brand new flavor. Keeping certain elements and characters from the original run – Professor X and his school, Cyclops and Jean Grey for example – Giant Size X-Men #1 introduced an almost entirely new cast of characters to the team. Among them were Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, and Nightcrawler, characters created by writer Len Wein and artist Dave Cockrum. These heroes became iconic members of the group, and it’s hard to imagine the X-Men media franchise without them now.

Based on these new characters, and the work of subsequent creators like Chris Claremont and John Byrne, Uncanny X-Men became a runaway hit after only a couple of years. But none of that would have been possible without the creative genius of Len Wein and Dave Cockrum. In fact, one of the key elements Wein and Cockrum created for that issue features heavily in Jonathan Hickman’s current Dawn of X reboot. I’m referring to Krakoa the Living Island, which now serves as the home base of the entire mutant nation. So it is only fitting that Marvel properly pay homage to these two creative geniuses. They gave the franchise so much.

A QUIET PLACE II Survival Rooms to Put Fans to a Silent Test

https://nerdist.com/article/a-quiet-place-ii-survival-exhibit/

A Quiet Place used silence to terrify audiences, as even the smallest of noises could mean instant death for one of its characters. With a highly-anticipated sequel about to hit theaters, the stakes are only going to get bigger. But we don’t just mean for the Abbott family. Fans of the franchise don’t have to worry about being devoured by giant monsters. But soon they will get a chance to put their own silent skills to the test. An all-new A Quiet Place II survival room exhibit will challenge brave fans to stay silent while attempting to make it out alive.

Paramount Pictures has announced (in news we first came across at Mashable) a new A Quiet Place II Dolby survival room experience. Fans in New York City and Los Angeles will get the opportunity to try and escape an obstacle course based on the movie. It won’t involve playing silent Monopoly or getting stuck in silos of grain. Instead visitors will have to maneuver their way through a challenging path as quietly as possible.

“This multi-sensory experience entails an intense 5-7 minute progression—filled with physical and mental obstacles—for groups of three. This immersive, in-world recreation of A Quiet Place II tasks guests with keeping their decibel levels down and mitigating any sound in their surroundings…at all costs.”

Huge bonus points to anyone who tries to get through the survival room with a newborn baby in tow. (No, wait. Don’t do that. That’s insane. What if they cry?)

The experience will run in New York City from March 2 to the 7, at the Dolby Soho at 477 Broadway. It will also “have additional immersive experiences perfect for every film fan’s Instagram.” The exhibit then moves to Los Angeles from March 16 to the 19, at 8483 Melrose Ave West Hollywood, CA 90069. That will lead to the film’s theatrical release on March 20.

Both locations are already accepting reservations, though walk-ups will be welcome. However, we doubt this news will stay quiet for long. If you plan on attending we’d suggest signing up now before they fill up. As of this writing spots are already hard to come by.

This is the latest promotion for the film, which recently released a second trailer. It doesn’t share new information about the plot, but it does feature some new footage from the movie. All of which is absolutely terrifying.

While the first movie held back on showing the monsters in their entirety for much of the film, A Quiet Place II looks to be going full Aliens. The first film was more self-contained, focusing on the Abbott family’s struggle to survive at their home. But they’re heading out into the world in the second film. And that’s going to involve more monsters roaming around out in the open. There’s no secret what they look like at this point, and seeing them in all their horrible glory is scary.

Fortunately, the brave souls who enter the survival rooms won’t have to worry about them if they mess up and make noise. At least we don’t think they will. You know what? If you do give it a shot, stay extra quiet just in case.

FreakNik To Return This Summer As 3-Day Festival Called Freak World

https://www.blackenterprise.com/freaknik-to-return-this-summer-as-3-day-festival-called-freak-world/

Freanik

Get ready for it. FreakNik is returning. This summer. The legendary Black Spring Break event in Atlanta, Georgia, will return as a three-day festival called Freak World. It will feature more than 40 artists performing during the weekend.

Freak World will run June 19-21 at the Cascade Driving Range in southwest Atlanta.

Carlos Neal, of Atlanta-based promotion company After 9, decided last year to bring back the infamous Atlanta event “with a daylong concert at Cellairis Amphitheatre at Lakewood. A lineup featuring Project Pat, Uncle Luke, Da Brat, Foxy Brown, and many more nearly sold out the venue and attracted an adult audience old enough to remember the rambunctious Freakniks of the past, but young enough to still party responsibly,” WSBTV reported.

“For everyone who said, ‘This isn’t the Freaknik of the ‘90s,’ I’m like, look, we’re older now and most people got that and still had fun,” Neal told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. This year’s event will be for 18 years and older.

The 2020 festival has been expanded to three days.

“I wanted to do it in a community where people embraced this event. I chose the community where I grew up because I wanted the dollars to impact that community,” he said. “So I wanted to do it in a predominantly African-American neighborhood.”

Nealis also working with Atlanta festival promoter Eric Barnes and they also plan to feature more than 100 vendors and schedule about 40-50 acts. Nealis expects the three-day event to attract more than 10,000 fans per day.

Freaknik originally started in 1983 as a small gathering but by the ’90s, hundreds of thousands of people flocked to the event. It was during this time then-Mayor Bill Campbell’s staff decided to stop Freaknik, as the community thought it had gotten out of control. Freaknik was initially conceived at Spelman College by club president Skyla Goodson. And at first, attracted HBCU students on spring break, eventually, people from all over the country began attending.

By 2010, then-Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed banned any Freaknik-related activities.

There’s even a podcast reminiscing about the early days of Freaknik called “Freaknik: A Discourse on a Paradise.”

Some don’t seem happy to see Freaknik return in any form. While some people tweeted about the chaos and potential crime the event could bring to the area, others tweeted that the culture has changed too much to revisit the event. As one person tweeted: “As much as I love the effort… The social environment that made freaknik legendary doesn’t exist anymore tbh.”
