Following the success of her first partnership with Ashley Stewart during the holiday season last year, Loni Love is back with a whole new collection of pieces for the plus-size women’s clothing and lifestyle brand.
The Real co-host launched her exclusive Loni Love x Ashley Stewart Spring 2020 collection on Friday. This is the first of three new collections on the way in her partnership with the brand, and the pieces are focused on embracing current trends as well as color. Love said the bolder the better.
“This collection is all about celebrating color and vibrancy right in time for the warmer months,” she shared with us via email. “I want to encourage women to embrace their individuality with these bright and bold pieces. More often than not, clothing in extended sizes can be boring and basic, so it was important to me to curate new and exciting patterns in this collection.”
The 48-year-old star knows just as much as anyone else shopping for plus-size clothing how important it is to have options that not only fit “curvaceous bodies,” but also are beautiful.
“I’ve been wearing Ashley Stewart for years, so I’ve loved actually being a part of the process of opening up affordable and fashionable options for women of all curvy shapes and sizes,” she said. “From launching my first-ever fashion partnership for Holiday 2019, to this latest Spring 2020 collection, it’s been a dream come true.”

Maybe it’s the anime fan in me, but there’s something about teenage heroes that just feels really relatable. Especially when they’ve all got their own emotional baggage that you can identify with on different levels. That’s precisely why issue #40 of Teen Titans works as a great jumping in point for the team.
The issue kicks off with the team trying to figure out how they can get to purgatory to track down Djinn, a member of the team who’s been taken. As my uncle once told me, the quickest path from one point to another is a straight line. Unfortunately, the straight line from the land of the living to purgatory goes straight through hell.
YUP. Time for a bunch of teenagers to halfway die and travel through the valley of death.
After some tough love from Damian, who knows no other kind, the crew eventually ends up in Hell with Jakeem staying behind to revive them all before the 30-minute deadline. As they’re walking through a maze, Damian admits to the group that he knows his way around Hell because it’s where he went when he died.
…. Dark.
After that sad, awkward moment is over, the team gets split up and faces off against each of their greatest fears. This is when we get to know them all on a deeper level, whether you know the characters’ backstories or have some gaps in your encyclopedia: which is expected given how new some (all?) of the characters are.
The only downside to this issue is that it pulls on a lot of familiar comics tropes. It’s essentially throwing a fresh coat of paint on a used car. But, it still drives and gets you from point A to point B.

Unprecedented times call for unprecedented reporting. That’s why NBC is partnering with Facebook for NBC News Special Report: Coronavirus Pandemic, a live primetime special anchored by Nightly News host Lester Holt. The coverage will air Thursday night at 10 p.m. ET across NBC, MSNBC, the streaming service NBC News NOW and Telemundo Digital.
“Unlike specials I’ve done in my career, this one is still being written, because the story is still being written almost by the hour,” Holt told ESSENCE by phone on Wednesday. “It’s moving so quickly. So it’ll be kind of a real-time reflection of where we are at that moment and trying to address these issues and questions.”
In a press release for the special, the network explained that a team of correspondents will provide crucial real-time information around what viewers need to know about COVID-19. The one-hour broadcast will also include expert analysis and health advice from NBC’s Coronavirus Crisis Team, including NBC News and MSNBC correspondent Dr. John Torres and top virologist and NBC News and MSNBC medical contributor Dr. Joseph Fair.
Holt shared that the project came together organically with experts and correspondents looking at the many angles of the coronavirus story. In preparation for the event, the veteran journalist really honed in on some of the very new and unprecedented ways that the country is attempting to “flatten the curve” of the now-global pandemic. The Dateline NBC host was specifically eager to learn more about sheltering in place, a tactic that was recently implemented by officials in the Bay Area, Boston, and Colorado.

In light of the coronavirus crisis, Ohio moved their primary election from last Tuesday all the way up to June. The next primary contest is March 29 in Puerto Rico, then Hawaii, Alaska, and Wyoming April 4, followed by Wisconsin on April 7. In light of the coronavirus, Democrats in Wisconsin have sued to extend early voting. Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Maryland have all delayed primaries, as well.
All this upheaval has left many asking: What does this mean for the November general election? And can our autocrat-in-chief suspend the election?
The short answer, thankfully, is no. State elections and primaries are at the discretion of, you guessed it, the states. That’s one of the main reasons our primary process is so messed up. It goes state by state, and they have wide leeway to set their primaries whenever they like, usually by statute.
Postponing a primary isn’t easy, as we saw in Ohio. The courts there, at first, declined to let Governor Mike DeWine delay the election, but after an order from the state’s top health official to close polling places, the court was left with no choice but to allow the election to move to June.
The federal election would not be so easy to move, since the date is dictated by federal statute, and the logistics of the local elections are controlled by the states. 2 U.S. Code § 7 says: “The Tuesday next after the 1st Monday in November, in every even numbered year, is established as the day for the election, in each of the States and Territories of the United States.”
As much as he would like it to be true, Donald Trump cannot defy federal law. He can try, but even this Supreme Court would stop him based on legal precedent alone. A declaration of emergency doesn’t give him these powers, nor can he control how individual states conduct their elections.
It’s not Trump we should be worried about here, but the states. They could indeed do what Ohio did and try to close polling places, but that would be much harder to do in a general election. But the difference between the primaries and the general is that states have time now to make accommodations. It’s up to states and the federal government to eliminate the requirement of an “excuse” for absentee voting and take other measures.
Another fun fact? Donald Trump and Mike Pence’s terms as president and vice president are up in January whether there is an election or not, meaning the constitutional rules of succession kick in. Translation: If there’s no election and Democrats maintain their majority in the House, we get President Nancy Pelosi.
If nothing else, this crisis is a wake-up call that states need to change how voting is done, and before the November election, all states need to make sure their voting procedures are accessible, fair, and safe. We’re fans of vote by mail and hope that it goes national before November.
