It’s no secret that we here at TMS love Taika Waititi. I mean, the man is hilarious, talented, and deeply geeky: what’s not to love? Recently, Waititi made an appearance on the YouTube series Pizza Film School, which is hosted by fellow MCU alums Joe and Anthony Russo. The trio discussed favorite pizza places and classic films, and Waititi talked about the films that inspired his work on Thor: Ragnarok.
Waititi talked about Flash Gordon(AH-AH!) and Big Trouble in Little China as influences, saying “I wanted to capture a road trip of people who had no business hanging out with each other, … And I put all that to [Led Zepplin’s] ‘Immigrant Song.’ That song is basically about Thor. Just knowing the tone, knowing that it had to be playful and over the top…that this is unapologetically a space opera, and I’m going to pump this with color and life and energy and humor, and cool music. And the way I feel about that film is like if you’d ask a bunch of 10-year-olds what they want in that movie, we basically said yes to every idea.”
Ideas like Jeff Goldblum melting people into blue goo via a magic stick? We’re into it.
Waititi added that Kurt Russell’s performance in Big Trouble in Little China was an inspiration as well. “[Thor] just wants to get home, … All this stuff is going on, even with Hulk… he’s willing to leave people but also he’s trying to keep everyone together. He’s trying to be charismatic, and he’s trying to be a hero. He fails a lot, and tonally, that’s something from Big Trouble that I carried with me into Ragnarok.”
There’s a lot to enjoy in this interview, and it makes us all the more excited for Thor: Love and Thunder.

Paper Mario: The Origami King hits the Switch next week, on July 17. It looks like it will be a worthwhile Nintendo diversion. The publisher showed off some more live gameplay during a Nintendo Treehouse broadcast Friday morning. Origami King is a single-player RPG adventure featuring a puzzle-based combat system. The ring-oriented battles occur in two phases. The battles rely on the player’s timing, but don’t grant experience points the way, for instance, a Pokémon duel would.
“We are seeing Mario and Luigi enter Toad Town,” Nintendo’s Ethan Stockton narrates. “They’ve been invited here by Princess Peach, to join in on an origami festival, but something seems to be wrong. There’s not a whole lot of Toads to be seen.”
In the game’s playful narrative, the power-hungry King Olly occupies Peach’s castle. The Origami King corrupts the inhabitants of the Mushroom Kingdom, folding and bending them to his will. After being confronted by the newly “folded” Princess Peach, Mario falls through a trapdoor and into the castle’s dungeon. Down in the dark, he encounters a bitter, folded-up Bowser. Mario also meets a helpful new companion: King Olly’s sister, Olivia.
“Fans of [2004’s] Thousand-Year Door will be pleased to hear there’s a bit more emphasis on The Origami King’s story than previous Paper Mario games,” USgamer’s Nadia Oxford writes in her early impressions of the game. “I can’t say I won’t get tired of how solving each battle puzzle makes me feel like a clever girl. I also can’t say I won’t get tired of watching Toads pelt my enemies after I give them a good payday, but I doubt that’s going to be a problem. I can say there’s a lot of love and personality in The Origami King, and I can say it’s built on a unique battle system.”

As Al-Samkari told The Daily Dot, “There was so much going on at the time [in June], and of course all of it still is—but since it was Pride month at the time, the thought was to try and do something to help Black LGBTQ folks specifically. Naturally Black Lives Matter and Pride ought to be considered year round, so we didn’t want to rush and get it done in June, and pushing it out to July would allow us the time to organize properly.”

Titles in the offering include a lesbian BDSM game called Ladykiller in a Bind, queer graphic novels We Know the Devil and Heaven Will Be Mine, as well as games such as Arcade Spirits and Errant Kingdom. A demo of Love Shore, an upcoming game from Perfect Garbage Studios, is also included.
All sales go directly towards The Okra Project, a charity that provides mental health services to Black trans people.
