Patrick Mahomes MVP

Patrick Mahomes just won the Most Valuable Player award after winning the Super Bowl over the San Francisco 49ers, but he also has something else he values, his sneaker collection. It has been reported that Mahomes has over 180 pairs of sneakers and just built a custom room in his house to hold them.

“We renovated a lot of the house. The last thing was the shoe room,” Mahomes told Bleacher Report. “That has been something that I’ve wanted for the last six, seven years, at least.”

Mahomes, who lives with his high school sweetheart girlfriend, has a 3,759-square-foot home that he purchased last year. The house, which was built in 1953, includes three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a home gym, a pool, and a chef’s kitchen.

The shoe closet has shelves with backlighting that draw attention to the sneakers as well as several different pairs of sunglasses.  The room also has a security camera to keep an eye on some of his prized possessions.

“When you don’t have enough room, I feel like you lose the value of some of your shoes,” said Mahomes.  “Some of the shoes that you’ve worn once, you forget about because you don’t see them. So I wanted that shoe room to highlight that.”

Mahomes collection includes several different Adidas sneaker variations. Adidas has been his official sponsor since 2017.  He also has a “Game of Thrones”-inspired pair called the “Night’s Watch Ultraboost” and many other customized ones, with phrases like “NYC,” “ATL,” and “Pharrell Williams” inscribed on the back.

Mahomes told Bleacher Report his favorite sneakers are the pair of Yeezy Boost 750 Triple Blacks, “These are my babies. They’re big but at the same time you can wear them with anything.”

Mahomes sneaker collection might get a lot bigger. It is rumored that he could get a $200 million contract extension when he becomes eligible for free agency.

‘Hamilton’ Movie Starring Original Broadway Cast Hits Cinemas in 2021

You don’t have to throw away your shot (or hundreds of dollars) to see Hamilton.

A filmed version of the wildly popular stage musical is coming to cinemas (and Disney+) next year. And the Internet is 100 percent here for it.

Featuring the original Broadway cast—including creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda—Hamilton will hit screens on Oct. 15, 2021. It’s unclear whether this is a one-off event or an extended release.

Miranda tweeted the news on Monday, teasing followers with a cryptic “Wait for it” message before making the big announcement.

Fans are understandably over the moon: Broadway ticket prices start at $230 for a midweek matinee, and range from £43 ($56) to £230 ($300) in London.

For those living under a rock for the past five years, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s smash-hit musical tells the story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton through hip hop, R&B, pop, soul, and show tunes.

Hamilton premiered on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre (also home to Miranda’s 2008 debut In the Heights) in August 2015. The critically acclaimed production went on to win 11 Tony Awards, seven Olivier Awards, a Grammy, a Pulitzer Prize, and some A-list fans.

“Lin-Manuel Miranda created an unforgettable theater experience and a true cultural phenomenon, and it was for good reason that Hamilton has hailed as an astonishing work of art,” Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, said in a statement.

“All who saw it with the original cast will never forget that singular experience,” he boasted. “And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to share this same Broadway experience with millions of people around the world.”

The film is set for release in North America next year (so I’ll still have to pony up the cash to watch it on the West End).

As with any cinematic showing of a live performance, though, I am a bit wary: One of theater’s greatest joys is being able to view the show in your own way—not only as the movie director intends.

That may not be a problem, according to Disney, which called its screening “a leap forward” in the art of live capture, promising that it will “transport” audiences “in a uniquely intimate way.”

Exactly what that means remains to be seen.

Miranda is happy with the final product, though. So I’m in.

“I’m so proud of what [director] Tommy Kail has been able to capture in this filmed version of Hamilton—a live theatrical experience that feels just as immediate in your local movie theater,” the almost-EGOT winner said. “We’re excited to partner with Disney to bring the original Broadway company of Hamilton to the largest audience possible.”

Disney’s production of a 2016 stage performance includes original cast members:

Lin-Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton

Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton

Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr

Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler

Christopher Jackson as George Washington

Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson

Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison

Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton

Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds

Jonathan Groff as King George III

Report: Greta Thunberg Nominated For Peace Prize

Teen climate activist Greta Thunberg has reportedly been nominated for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize.

Swedish lawmakers Jens Holm and Hakan Svenneling submitted the 17-year-old’s name for consideration, according to the Associated Press.

Thunberg “has worked hard to make politicians open their eyes to the climate crisis,” the Left Party members said. “Action for reducing our emissions and complying with the Paris Agreement is therefore also an act of making peace.”

The schoolgirl who inspired an international movement to fight climate change was recommended for the prize last year by three Norwegian members of parliament.

In 2018, Thunberg was just a pigtailed kid camping outside Sweden’s parliament, demanding reduced carbon emissions.

Now, she’s a ponytailed phenom who’s emboldened students across the world to hold climate strikes.

Motivated by the Parkland teen activists in Florida, Thunberg created the Fridays For The Future movement, trading weekly school lessons for regular protests.

In December, she became the youngest recipient of Time Magazine’s Person of the Year tradition, which began in 1927.

Busy making the world a better place, Thunberg has not yet addressed the 2020 Peace Prize nod. Last year, she tweeted that “It’s obviously a great honor and nice to be nominated for such a big prize.”

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed won in 2019 for his efforts to achieve international peace.

If Greta prevails (fingers crossed!), she would be the 54th female Nobel Prize recipient and 18th woman to earn the Peace Prize in the award’s 118-year history.

Since 1901, male nominees have dominated the annual list, winning on 73 more occasions than women, according to Refinery29.

Then 17-year-old Malala Yousafzai, champion of women’s and girls’ rights to education, won the Peace Prize alongside child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi in 2014. Most recently, human rights activist Nadia Murad snagged the 2018 medal “for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict.”

The Norwegian Nobel Institute neither confirms nor denies nominees until an official list is published 50 years later. (Definitive proof will be available in 2070.)

This year’s winner will be announced in early October.

The Case For Angela Abar (or Why The World Needs More Sister Night)

https://blacknerdproblems.com/the-case-for-angela-abar-or-why-the-world-needs-more-sister-night/

So, the first (and most likely, only) season of HBO’s Watchmen series is done. It will be remembered as an across-the-board success that not only maintained loyalty and reverence for its source material, but was also unafraid to innovate within that time-honored universe. And despite the Emmy snub, the risk mostly paid off…which is why I’m waiting on DC to fully commit within the panels as well as the screen.

Sister Night Comic

Sister Night

Played by Regina King, Angela Abar is one of the most intriguing, likeable protagonists I’ve ever seen in science fiction. Capable, competent, determined and refreshingly vulgar, I’d easily put King’s ass-kicking heroine up there with the likes of Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor. Put simply, there’s no reason for there to not be an impending Sister Night comic series. DC Comics seems to make a pass at diversity about as often as they do at rebooting (or at least semi rebooting) their entire universe, both of which usually have mixed results. Meanwhile, Marvel has had a pretty decent run selling us on Black characters such as Miles Morales, Luke Cage, and the Black Panther. And sure, DC has some success Duke Thomas, Vixen, and everyone’s favorite Green Lantern, John Stewart, but introducing readers to Sister Night would be a creatively fulfilling venture on a couple of levels.

The Marvel Example

In 2003, Marvel dropped a limited series entitled Truth: Red, White and Black that would alter the history of the Marvel Universe with the reveal that the super soldier serum that created Captain America had been tested on a Black man, Isaiah, during the Tuskegee experiments. A couple of generations later (in comic time), the grandson of Isaiah Bradley took up the mantle of Patriot after growing up hearing of his legend. This brief summary alone brings about the possibility of so much world building about the secret history of the Marvel Universe. Now, imagine this kind of push for a limited comic series for Sister Night, a direct descendant of the first superhero in the Watchmen universe, now revealed to be a black man who wanted to wage war on police corruption. DC would be doing itself an enormous favor in the diversity game to add a character of such nuance to its roster and fictional history.

Don’t Stop Now

Sister Night profile
Now, certainly the argument could be made in the wake of the Watchmen show’s nigh-unanimous success and the critical praise for King’s performance that DC has already done itself said favor. We’ve already seen that there are those in the industry that will do anything to dismiss any mainstream success and popularity of Black characters as either a fluke or a fad. Less enlightened comic fans could very easily dismiss Sister Night and the direction the show took the Watchmen universe as a “version” of the story and not canon. A comic series would be doubling down on a diverse character that has been proven to be successful. And in a time when the Big Two are notorious for retreating to centering more familiar white franchises at the first sign of dissent in the readership, what better character to run with than an ass-kicking nun-themed detective that rides out in a Buick to Knight Rider-esque EDM music? Face it. The world needs more Sister Night.
