Get ready to howl at the full moon: Ryan Gosling is set to play the Wolfman in Universal’s next monster movie reboot. While a director has yet to be announced, Cory Finley (Bad Education) is said to be current frontrunner. The script was written by Orange is the New Black alums Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, based on an original pitch by Gosling himself.
Little is known about the plot of the film, except that it is a contemporary setting and thematically in the vein of Jake Gyllenhaal’s superbly unsettling Nightcrawler. If we’re talking werewolf newsmen, then I would be remiss if I didn’t shout out Harrison Ford’s were-hyena Mack Tannen from Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues:
The Wolfman would be the latest entry into Universal’s monster legacy reboot. Universal originally envisioned an MCU-style Dark Universe, where a series of monster movies would feature interconnected story lines. They assembled a superstar cast that included Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, Javier Bardem as Frankenstein, and Johnny Depp as the Invisible Man.
But after Tom Cruise’s The Mummy tanked, the studio shelved their plans for a cinematic universe and went back to basics. Their first outing, this year’s The Invisible Man, was a low budget thriller starring Elisabeth Moss as a woman escaping her abusive partner.
Leigh Whannell’s take on the legacy character was well reveiwed, and The Invisible Man went on to earn over $122 million on a $7 million budget. It probably would have earned more has its release not been cut prematurely short by the COVID-19 outbreak.
Unviersal’s last attempt at the The Wolfman was released in 2010, and starred Benicio del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, and Emily Blunt. The film, directed by Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger), was an expensive flop and poorly reviewed, but nevertheless went on to win the Academy Award for Best Makeup that year.
It will be interesting to see how they adapt The Wolfman for modern times. These films work best when there is a social message underlying them, a meaning behind the monster. And there’s plenty of rich territory to explore in a story of a man who becomes a beast. It’s also been a minute since we’ve had a genuinely good werewolf movie, a horror subgenre that is tragically under-served.
Outside of An American Werewolf in London, what are our truly great werewolf movies? The Underworld franchise is a gloomy slog, and let’s not even bother with Twilight. The last time I saw a satisfying werewolf story may very well be Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. In the meantime, if you’re looking for solid werewolf entries, you can check out feminist horror fave Ginger Snaps or the bloody action-packed Dog Soldiers.

This afternoon, SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft successfully launched two astronauts into orbit atop a Falcon 9 rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The launch marks the first time in nearly a decade that NASA has launched astronauts into space from from U.S. soil. After the space shuttle program ended in 2011, NASA has used Russian rockets launched from Kazakhstan to transport U.S. astronauts to the international space station.

The successful launch is a historic event for many reasons. It’s the first ever crewed mission for SpaceX, and it marks the first time that a privately developed spacecraft has launched humans into orbit. It is the first step in an epic journey that will eventually (maybe) lead to commercial space travel.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said, “Maybe there’s an opportunity here for America to maybe pause and look up and see a bright, shining moment of hope at what the future looks like, that the United States of America can do extraordinary things even in difficult times.”

The launch, which was originally scheduled for earlier this week, was delayed due to bad weather. Aboard the Dragon capsule are NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken. The capsule is expected to dock at the International Space Station at 10:27 am ET Sunday morning.

The family of George Floyd is taking his autopsy into their own hands. After the preliminary findings stated that there were “no physical findings that support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxia or strangulation,” the family has announced that an independent autopsy will be performed.
“They’re going to have their own autopsy,” the family’s attorney Benjamin Crump said during a press conference according to the NY Daily News. “We’re not going to rely on this DA or this city to tell us the truth. We’re going to take custody back of George Floyd’s body, and we’re bringing in Dr. Michael Baden to perform an independent autopsy because we saw in the Eric Garner case and so many other cases where they have these people who work with the city come up with things that are such an illusion.”
Dr. Michael Baden is a well-known medical examiner who also testified in the notorious O.J Simpson trial and also performed an autopsy Michael Brown, the Ferguson, MO teenager that was shot and killed by a police officer. He was also the chief medical examiner for New York in the late 1970s.
The preliminary findings from the medical examiner’s office states that “the combined effects of Mr. Floyd being restrained by police, his underlying health conditions and any potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death.” Floyd also had coronary artery disease and hypertensive heart disease.
Floyd’s killing caused mayhem in cities across the country after the video of his death went viral. In the video, former Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin is seen kneeling into Floyd’s neck while he is in handcuffs after he was suspected of using a counterfeit $20 bill. Chauvin has been charged with third degree murder and second degree manslaughter. He was fired from the Minneapolis Police Department after Floyd’s death.
