Far Sector #6 Preview

https://blacknerdproblems.com/far-sector-6-preview/

Tensions in The City Enduring are high as the Emotion Exploit – the mandatory genetic tech that strips citizens of their emotions in the name of peace – is up for referendum. But Jo’s attentions are divided when Councilor Marth makes a surprising and distinctly emotional overture…

Comics have been put on pause like so many other things as a result of COVID-19, but they’re slowly coming back. Far Sector allows us to escape by transporting ourselves across the galaxy to kick it with one of DC’s illest new heroes.

Because it’s been a while since we’ve seen Green Lantern Jo Mullein, DC sent over a preview of issue six before it hits comic shelves on June 2nd. Peep the pages below and support your local comic shop when the issue drops!

The Pull – 05/27/2020: Comics are Out, but Keep Wearing Your Masks

https://blacknerdproblems.com/the-pull-05-27-2020-comics-are-out-but-keep-wearing-your-masks/

Weekly comic pulls are making a comeback as distributors get back to work, and we, at BNP, are ready with the new reviews. So, without further ado…

Here’s what we reviewed in comics this week that you might want to check out:

Avengers #33

Avengers #33 is the start of a very promising new arc and as a single issue, it’s one of the best I’ve read in a long time. For the reader and (to an even bigger extent) the Avengers, Moon Knight is kind of treated like the crazy guy that everyone ignores and underestimates. That’s a mistake that everyone will come to regret.

Justice League #45

What I liked about it from a character perspective was that it allowed everyone to get out their frustrations about everyone else. Everyone on Earth is harboring some type of feelings toward people, but the Spectre’s possession made the Justice League release all of that to their teammates, fueling the fight. If you ever wanted to see Batman called out for being so secretive and kind of a dick… this might be a comic you want to buy.

The Low, Low Woods #5

The story follows El and Vee as they wake up in a movie theater almost certain that they are missing a chunk of their memory. They then have to navigate the multitude of things that could mean and how they can figure out what exactly happened to them. In their pursuit of that, the eerie and unsettling nature of their town Shudder-To-Think unfolds before our eyes. There are witches, men with no skin, women with sinkholes in their stomachs, and a conspiracy covered up by magic. It’s wild.

Marauders #10

The Marauders are playing for keeps and that means doing whatever it takes to make sure these weapons are out of their enemy’s hands and never see the light of day again. You know things are serious when even Emma joins the crew to make sure matters are handled. As always, seeing Ms. Frost in action is a treat and we get some classic Emma Frost battle tactics. If looks could kill, Emma’s body count must be through the roof. Stefano Caselli’s artwork and pages show the white queen at her best.

Suicide Squad #5

Jog specifically is someone I’ve taken a liking to since the first issue. He’s a speedster who’s lazy, but like not in the way that The Flash relies on his speed so he slips up in other areas. Jog is focused, but when he’s not running, he’s kinda just chillin’ while eating some chips or taking a nap. He’s also got a bit of a belly. And he’s black.

Ryan Gosling as the Wolfman? We’re Not Mad About It

https://www.themarysue.com/ryan-gosling-as-the-wolfman-were-not-mad-about-it/

Get ready to howl at the full moon: Ryan Gosling is set to play the Wolfman in Universal’s next monster movie reboot. While a director has yet to be announced, Cory Finley (Bad Education) is said to be current frontrunner. The script was written by Orange is the New Black alums Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, based on an original pitch by Gosling himself.

Little is known about the plot of the film, except that it is a contemporary setting and thematically in the vein of Jake Gyllenhaal’s superbly unsettling Nightcrawler. If we’re talking werewolf newsmen, then I would be remiss if I didn’t shout out Harrison Ford’s were-hyena Mack Tannen from Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues:

The Wolfman would be the latest entry into Universal’s monster legacy reboot. Universal originally envisioned an MCU-style Dark Universe, where a series of monster movies would feature interconnected story lines. They assembled a superstar cast that included Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, Javier Bardem as Frankenstein, and Johnny Depp as the Invisible Man.

But after Tom Cruise’s The Mummy tanked, the studio shelved their plans for a cinematic universe and went back to basics. Their first outing, this year’s The Invisible Man, was a low budget thriller starring Elisabeth Moss as a woman escaping her abusive partner.

Leigh Whannell’s take on the legacy character was well reveiwed, and The Invisible Man went on to earn over $122 million on a $7 million budget. It probably would have earned more has its release not been cut prematurely short by the COVID-19 outbreak.

Unviersal’s last attempt at the The Wolfman was released in 2010, and starred Benicio del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, and Emily Blunt. The film, directed by Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger), was an expensive flop and poorly reviewed, but nevertheless went on to win the Academy Award for Best Makeup that year.

It will be interesting to see how they adapt The Wolfman for modern times. These films work best when there is a social message underlying them, a meaning behind the monster. And there’s plenty of rich territory to explore in a story of a man who becomes a beast. It’s also been a minute since we’ve had a genuinely good werewolf movie, a horror subgenre that is tragically under-served.

Outside of An American Werewolf in London, what are our truly great werewolf movies? The Underworld franchise is a gloomy slog, and let’s not even bother with Twilight. The last time I saw a satisfying werewolf story may very well be Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. In the meantime, if you’re looking for solid werewolf entries, you can check out feminist horror fave Ginger Snaps or the bloody action-packed Dog Soldiers.

What do you want to see out of a modern Wolfman movie? Are you excited to see Gosling don the pelt?
