Chris Evans in Avengers- Endgame (2019) as Steve Rogers. Aka America's Ass

Didn’t think I’d be crying over a video of Captain America’s speech before the time heist in Avengers: Endgame set to videos supporting Joe Biden, and yet here I am. Kevin Smith posted an incredible video with some masterful editing that turns the Marvel movie’s scenes into a call to arms for Biden, and Endgame directors the Russo brothers retweeted it.

No one is sure who made this video at the moment, but its message is simple and now widely seen, with over a million views: It’s Captain America’s speech set to a video of how we lost five years ago (well, we lost in 2016 but you get the sentiment) and how we now have a chance to “take it all back” with Joe Biden.

We have to say that the video is pretty damned brilliant, and it does exactly what it is meant to do. It makes me extremely excited to vote for Joe Biden.

In true Avengers fashion, many of the cast and crew behind the film joined in to share the video (Chris Evans even RT’d the Russo Brothers).

In a lot of ways, this video also drives home why I love these movies so much. Watching heroes take on the bad guys, trying to stand up for what’s right? It makes me have hope in our future and the future of humanity. Sure, it is a bit cheesy to look at Captain America’s speech in Avengers: Endgame and apply it to the current presidential election, but it does feel like we’re in the fight of our lives.

Right now, Donald Trump clearly does not care about the American people. He cares about protecting the rich, keeping those who will do his bidding on his side, and taking as much power as he possibly can. It’s a terrifying time in this country and some of us may have entertained the thought that we wished superheroes were real so that they could save us from this monster.

But the truth is that Captain America isn’t going to save us. What WILL stop this is if we do our civic duty and actually get out there and make our voices heard. Voting is the most important thing we can do right now. Phonebanking is a superpower. Getting your friends to vote is your training. We all have a chance to be the superheroes we need and we have to make sure that we’re doing our part in this election. Whatever it takes.

Anyway, do as the Avengers do.

An Avengers-Level Video for Joe Biden Reminds Us All To Assemble At the Polls

THE CRAFT: LEGACY Is a Confused, Disappointing Mess

https://nerdist.com/article/the-craft-legacy-review/

The first act of The Craft: Legacy is great. It’s full of lush and beautiful aesthetics; vibrant florals, effervescent sparkles, like an Instagram filter conjured to life. And that’s a compliment, because it’s the world these characters occupy: a modern world informed by technology that renders life more beautifully than it is. For a split second, Legacy feels like something fresh and knowing. Like it wandered into the frame of a TikTok Wiccan hashtag and mined it for gruesome possibilities.

Unfortunately, the film never lives up to its initial potential. Instead, The Craft: Legacy offers sparks of brilliance, but is weighed down by a final act that has “lost in reshoots” written all over it. It’s a shame, because director Zoe Lister-Jones is clearly talented. She amassed a wonderful young cast, and infused the film with the energy it needed to play cards with the 1996 original. That’s why the ending is especially troubling. Because it doesn’t mesh at all with what comes before. The final result feels tampered with in some needless effort to connect it to its predecessor. But this Craft was just fine on its own.

The young cast is splendid. Cailee Spaeny excels as our central character Lily, whose youthful vitality is anchored by an old-soul knowingness. Lily has a close relationship with her mother Helen (Michelle Monaghan), whose moving the pair to a new town so she can settle in with her boyfriend Adam (David Duchovny). This puts Lily in a fish-out-of-water scenario, and Spaeny masters this. You understand her, you feel for her when things go wrong—as they’re wont to do in films like this—and you empathize with her new role in this family she doesn’t understand. She’s looking for her place in this strange environment. And luckily, it isn’t long before she finds it.

Lily has a power that attracts a coven of fellow high school girls. They’re on the hunt for their fourth member, and know right away that Lily is it. Why? She can hear their telepathic whispers to skip detention. And she has the ability to make things happen with her mind. You know, typical witch stuff. The coven is made up of Frankie (Gideon Adlon), Tabby (Lovie Simone), and Lourdes (Zoey Luna), who each represent a direction and its corresponding element. Frankie is the south’s air, Tabby the east’s fire, and Lourdes the north’s earth. Which makes Lily their west’s water. She agrees to join and together, the coven’s powers are unstoppable. But with all of that power comes a price.

The Craft: Legacy is wonderful when it spends time with these girls. It’s subversive, refreshingly modern, and inclusive—and, in fact, challenges the original’s lack of inclusivity. It doesn’t best what came before, but it lives up to the “craft” of its title, which would have been more than enough. But it’s in the “legacy” where things start to fall apart.

The film would have worked best as a standalone with shades of the original peppered in. There are times where it feels like a soft reboot, and therein lie its strengths. When the coven interferes with the life of classmate Timmy (Nicholas Galitzine), they learn the weight of their power. It’s an important lesson for them: that their magic has consequences. Unfortunately, this lesson is undone by a series of tacked-on revelations that feel completely unearned. The whole finale feels like a bad episode of The X-Files. And if you’ve seen the spoilery trailers, you probably have an idea of where things are headed.

Ultimately, the film squanders its wonderful potential for a few cheap “aha” moments that never coalesce. In fact, they turn the whole film into one giant, incomprehensible mess. “Your difference is your power,” Helen often tells her daughter. If only The Craft: Legacy has listened.

Getting to Know the Radical Romance of Jasmine Guillory

https://nerdist.com/article/getting-to-know-jasmine-guillorys-romance-novels/

Romance novels are a new thing to me. And there is one woman who made me a hardcore fan of the fantastical genre: Jasmine Guillory. As we head towards the chilly days that are perfect for curling up with a good book, this is your guide to the magical Guillory-verse and each of the awesome standalone (sort of) novels that connect it. There’s something for every kind of reader here from cynic to dreamer, city meet cute to British Christmas romance. If you’re looking for something delightful and charming to dig your teeth into, Jasmine Guillory’s books are it.

What is the Guillory-verse?

Jasmine Guillory's book covers side by side

Berkley Books

A reinvention of the romance genre, Guillory’s books each tell the story of an unexpected couple. Her leads are Black women and the stories are contemporary. This isn’t the classical period romance with swooning women and handsome dukes—although there is nothing wrong with those stories. This is a gateway series to a wider love of all romance, as I can attest. These are stories you can easily connect with, relate to, and believe in. The women here are busy, loving, complex, and have no plans on finding love, but all do. With every page turn Guillory crafts a realistic world you want to live in and people you want to know. Though you can read the books in whichever order you’d like—I started with the magical Royal Holiday—they all share connections which help to build out the world and are fun to spot as you go forward.

So here’s a rundown of each of the titles to help you prep your Guillory-verse reading list:

The Wedding Date

Sparking off the series is this charming tale of a fake-romance turned real. When Alexa Monroe gets stuck in an elevator with a handsome and arrogant doctor named Drew, she doesn’t think much of it. But when he asks her to be his plus one to a wedding, things heat up. See, she has to pretend to be his girlfriend, which sounds like it might be fun… until things start to get too real.

The Proposal

Nikole Paterson is dating a hot but barely there boyfriend. He’s cute enough but she can sense things are coming to end… until he proposes to her at a Dodgers game in front of 45,000 people. When the press starts to swarm, she’s saved by a stranger named Carlos and his sister, who pretend to know her in order to help her escape. The pair embark on a whirlwind series of hookups which are meant to be anything but serious. Well, you can guess how that turns out.

The Wedding Party

Maddie and Theo are both best friends with Alexa (from The Wedding Date!) but the only thing that they can agree on is how much they hate each other. After a drunken hookup which was amazing, they start a secret relationship while they help plan Alexa’s wedding. But as the nuptials draw closer and they start to realize that they don’t have many booty calls left, things get complicated and the pair have to decide what they really want from each other.

Royal Holiday

When Vivian Forest gets the chance to join her daughter Maddie (yep, the same one) on a work trip to England, she can’t say no. Their adventure takes them to the Christmas home of the Royal Family where Maddie will be styling a member of the monarchy. Vivian is given free reign of the sprawling grounds and gets a tour from Malcolm, the Queen’s handsome private secretary. Connecting over the festive season is all well and good but Malcolm is from London and Vivian lives in the Bay Area… so it couldn’t really be more than a holiday fling, could it?

Party of Two

Party of Two book cover

Berkley Books

This timely offering is Guillory’s newest book (it recently hit shelves). Olivia Monroe’s life is on the brink of true stability. She’s moved to LA to start a law firm with her best friend. She has a gorgeous home. The last thing she needs is a new boyfriend. Especially one who just happens to be an upcoming political superstar. When the pair meet in a hotel bar they instantly connect but can they really find happiness together? You’ll have to grab a copy to find out.

Whichever book you decide to pick up you’ll likely fall in love. Each story is incredibly engaging, delightfully romantic, and a total joy. This is the new series you need in your life.
