Patrisse Cullors’ Vision Of Social Activism Is Coming To Life Through Her Work In Film By D'Shonda Brown ·March 15, 2021March 15, 2021

This Women’s History Month, Women in Film (WIF) is giving 12 trailblazing Black women their flowers for their contributions in Hollywood as directors, producers, leaders, and overall content creators. Deemed four of the phenomenal pathmakers about their passions, career highlights, and the importance of mentorship for Black women in Hollywood. This is our conversation with director Patrisse Cullors.

How does your background in film play into your passion for activism and social justice?

CULLORS: The images that I saw as a young Black girl really just impacted what I understood was possible for me — images on TV and film. Some of my favorite films were not films where I was represented. I’m a big fan of sci-fi fantasy and I didn’t get to see Black sci-fis growing up or the fantasy of Black folks. When I started to think about being part of film, the only thing that I could really think about was doing documentary films because I was like, “Black people are in documentary films about serious subjects.” When I joined the Good Trouble writers’ room, I realized that scripted television and film could be led and voiced by Black women.

Obviously, I’ve been so privileged to see the work of Ava DuVernay, Ryan Coogler and so many other Black directors who started to put Black people in films. Lovecraft Country is one of my favorite TV shows and anything Michaela Coel does is just so powerful and meaningful. Within the last three years, I really learned that TV and film is not just a representative of the lives that we live but also have a deep and profound impact on what we see as possible. I believe that my work in Hollywood and entertainment is an extension of my spiritual and political values.

How have you seen the film industry be impacted by the Black Lives Matter movement, and how has film impacted the movement?

CULLORS: In these last seven years of Black Lives Matter, we have seen more and more representation of Black activism on TV and in films, in particular. We’re just coming out of the launch of Judas and the Black Messiah, the first time where a Black Panther member is seen on a big screen with a huge budget. I relate more to the Black Panther than I do to Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement, a movement that really looks at how we not only protect and defend Black people but how do we create a new infrastructure for Black people so that we can get our needs met? The Black Panthers did that.

I recognized there’s more of a demand to see Black people on the big screen in leading roles. Everything Shonda [Rhimes] has done in this past decade and the positioning of Black women has been so powerful in different TV and film roles. I think that the movement has allowed for a Black renaissance to be present. I’m thinking Melina Matsoukas’ work, I’m thinking about Lena Waithe’s work and obviously, now leaders of Black Lives Matter are clearly in the entertainment world. Our vision is also coming to life.

You mentioned Good Trouble earlier, and you’re technically in the show with Malika’s character, played by Zuri Adele, being based on you. How does it feel to have a character based on your activism and what does it mean to you to create a narrative that’s so relatable to all Black women through Malika?

CULLORS: You’re right — I was a writer on the show and I’m technically in the show! Black women have been breaking ground in Hollywood for all of history so finally getting that recognition is really powerful. Watching Zuri on screen play Malika as a character who was inspired by my life is so moving. When Joanna Johnson, the showrunner, met me I think she really wanted me to be part of the process of developing that character because she’s a white woman. She was really clear like, “I can’t develop this character. We need Black women and we need you to come into the room and develop it.” I got to be in the writers’ room for season two and half of season three, and it’s so incredible to see the journey of Malika and to see how she gets the process in real time. It’s so important.

Let’s talk about your multi-year production deal with Warner Bros. TV. What did this moment mean to you and how will you use this platform to continue to amplify Black voices?

CULLORS: The Warner Bros. deal, with CAA and my manager at 3 Arts Jermaine Johnson, they really worked to make this thing happen, to make me feel seen and to make me feel valued as a Black woman coming into production. I love that I got to join the Warner Bros. family and it’s been nothing but a warm welcome. It’s not fluff. For some people who may feel doubtful, this is a dedicated deal that I’m using to both uplift the stories that I’ve had inside of me for a long time but I’m also really excited about uplifting stories of other Black people, other filmmakers, writers, producers, directors who are excited about challenging the tradition frame of TV and film and ready to push forward the edge. There’s been so many different people that I draw from that I’ve seen do that in these last several years. I just feel like I’m part of that legacy.

Why was it imperative that you become a part of the Women in Film Pathmaker Program, and what does mentorship mean to you?

CULLORS: Women in Film has actively worked to build community and I feel like it’s so important to celebrate women and supporting women. Our initiatives like the pathmaker program highlights the relationships that I have already inside the film world. I am so excited to highlight Noni Limar. She’s actually a mentor of mine and she’s mentored me for years. Her work has been at the center of so much of why I am in this space in the first place. She is an incredible thought leader, artist and creative. She has come on board to produce works of mine for years and I have supported her as well. I really feel like it’s a reciprocal relationship.

What do you love the most about Noni’s aspirations and how do you hope that your mentor-mentee relationship will benefit her work as a storyteller?

CULLORS: We live in a society that isolates us from each other and makes us believe in survival of the fittest. I think that’s a terrible way to live and when we are in community and in relationship with each other, we actually get more. I don’t really want to call it a mentor-mentee thing because literally she’s been my mentor for years. I want to call it sharing power and sharing power with her. We know that improving our industry for women is going to require collective action. We need to support one another no matter what and I’ve been really following how many women – I think it’s 2.2 million – have left the workforce since the pandemic. Noni is a mother of four children and she still does all of her work excellently. Giving her this opportunity to be embedded in a community allows for her to be seen the way she should be seen  as a full force of nature while being able to be part of the Women in Film cohort.

Why is it so important to reach back and help out the next generation of Black creatives and filmmakers?

CULLORS: It’s important to hold a container for Black women creatives because we are often left out of that conversation. We are often left out as being seen as a leader, of creative initiatives, of powerful initiatives. Three women created Black Lives Matter and for a long time people didn’t know that, people didn’t want to know it and people were confused. How do Black women do this? We’ve seen this year and in the last couple years Black women finally getting seen for who we are. If we could do what we have done individually, we can do it better in community.

Final Wandavision?; Charlamagne on Real Time; So There’s A Referendum on Speedy Gonzales, Pepe Le Pew & Dr. Seuss?; Candace Owens vs Black Culture; Disney’s Raya; Coming 2 America-The Grindhouse Airs @6pm EST

Hey folks! Let's just dig in....it's another episode of Afronerd Radio's The Grindhouse broadcast-airing this Sunday at 6 p.m., courtesy of the BTalk 100 internet platform.  The topics to be covered are the following:  Disney+'s wildly popular Wandavision streaming series just aired its final episode this weekend? And we have our thoughts. And is it the finale for the show?; NYC's The Breakfast Club radio personality appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher this past Saturday and some of our listenership didn't think that he gave a stellar performance when it came to discussing the body politic. What say you?

Well, we never did discuss the announcement that 6 books will no longer be published from the extensive Dr. Seuss Enterprises' catalog due to racist imagery, and now the milieu is pointing to other time-honored pop culture IPs (i.e. Speedy Gonzales, Pepe Le Pew) as being "problematic." ; a RedState.com piece places focus on Black conservative pundit,  Candace Owens for having a skewed if not, inaccurate commentary on "Black" culture; Hat tip to film historian, Sergio Mims for hipping the "steam engine" to this uplifting story-a Black female entrepreneur is transforming 12 acres of land into a 25M tech hub in Mississippi; Lastly, Dburt checked out Netflix' Pacific Rim: The BlackRaya and The Last Dragon and Coming 2 America....

Oh and what about actress, Rosario Dawson campaigning for a La Borinquena Netflix series?

One thing that Dburt is doing (finally) is investing in cryptocurrency, courtesy of Roundlyx. We would implore our followers to investigate, discern and then explore by using our referral code: afro-87A4BF

Some New Reopening Updates and More!

https://www.thenerdelement.com/2021/03/09/some-new-reopening-updates-and-more/

Hi everyone! Today I have some big reopening updates for Disneyland Resort and of course some big news at Walt Disney World as well. So, let’s get started, shall we?! At Walt Disney World, their theme parks are fully booked out for Spring break as Disney World has been sold out. As of Tuesday afternoon, admission to the Orlando theme parks is sold out from Saturday, March 13 through Friday, March 19, according to the company‘s website.

On these dates, Park Pass reservations are unavailable for Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios for both theme park guests and Disney resort guests.

Disney’s Florida parks have been operating at a significantly reduced capacity since reopening amid the Covid-19 pandemic in July.

In Florida, Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber is worried that spring breakers could lead to new COVID-19 outbreaks, nearly a year after the onset of the pandemic cut 2020’s spring break season short.

Last week, Gelber appeared on CNN’s New Day and said the city is “very concerned” about vacationers, especially as Miami-Dade county averages more than 1,000 new COVID cases a day and different variants of virus continue to crop up

“A lot of things are happening simultaneously,” Gelber said. “You have the variant down here, and we still are having sometimes dozens of deaths a day in our county.”

“And at the same time, we’ve got incredibly cheap round-trip tickets for 40 bucks from anywhere in the Northeast down here, discounted rooms and people who have been really pent up and wanting to get out with no other place to go than here,” he continued. “So we are very worried that there’s going to be a convergence of people here and a real problem in the aftermath of that.”

Despite some colleges canceling spring break, Miami Beach Police told CBS News that students from more than 200 schools are expected to head to the city this season, with the largest crowds taking place right now.

Gelber said on CNN that he is most concerned that gatherings at bars “might become the kinds of super-spreaders that I think we saw a year ago” and noted that police officers are handing out face masks in the absence of a mask mandate from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis

Disney World continues to operate at 35% capacity with safety measures in place. According to the Walt Disney World reservation system online, reservations to visit the parks can be made through January 14th, 2023. This indicates that the theme park company will still be using its reservation system at least until that date.

Disney’s Blizzard Beach reopened on Sunday after being closed during the pandemic. The resort also recently announced plans to celebrate its upcoming 50th anniversary.

Starting October 1, Walt Disney World will throw “The World’s Most Magical Celebration” that will last 18 months.

Over at Disney World’s Epcot, they have announced that Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure a new attraction at EPCOT will be opening on Oct. 1. The opening will happen on the same day as Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary celebration. The new attraction, located in the France pavilion, will make guests feel like they have shrunk to the size of Chef Remy as they scurry through Gusteau’s famous restaurant on a wild adventure for the whole family. Along with the new attraction, Disney said on its blog that it will open the La Crêperie de Paris, a new restaurant offering both table and quick-service options. Officials said the menu will feature sweet crepes, savory buckwheat galettes and authentic French hard cider. Back in January, construction walls that lead to the new attraction were taken down revealing beautiful murals and new bathrooms.

Disney said they hope to share more information about the attraction and the 18-month 50th anniversary celebration in the coming weeks and months.

Over at the Disneyland Resort, a Disney Chief Executive of the Walt Disney Company has announced that Disneyland will be reopening in late April! So, they just might be reopening it on April 1st for California residents. There is no specific date however, but this is really good news for Disneyland fans who are desperately wanting to go back after all these months from last year! Disneyland could still have some difficult time reopening since they want to make sure that it is safe for guests to come back, but when it does reopen, it will not be the same Disneyland we have seen before. Following the reopening of Disneyland, 10,000 of furloughed employees will be heading back to work. In April, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products furloughed non-essential executives, salaried and non-union hourly employees at the Disneyland and Walt Disney World resorts due to continuing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Disney laid off 28,000 employees in September at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. An exact count of the layoffs at the Disneyland resort was not available, but estimates put the number at approximately 10,000 employees.

About 37,000 Disney employees were on furlough as of Oct. 3, according to a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing by the company. “I’m pleased to say the response has been great thus far,” Chapek said. “Our cast members are excited to get back to work.”

Anaheim officials said in September that the coronavirus closures of Disneyland and the Anaheim Convention Center had led to a $100 million shortfall in city coffers.

“This is also good news for the Anaheim community, which depends on Disneyland for jobs and business generated by visitors,” Chapek said.

Chapek did not narrow the opening dates for Disneyland and DCA beyond “late April.” The delayed reopening for Disney’s Anaheim theme parks is not surprising. Disney moved cautiously last summer and reopened its four Florida parks after its rivals.

The Walt Disney World resort deployed a phased reopening plan when the four Florida theme parks returned last summer. Disney’s Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom theme parks reopened on July 11 while the Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios parks reopened on July 15. Disney has announced a DCA food festival that hasn’t begun yet. A Touch of Disney runs on select dates from March 18 to April 19 at Disney California Adventure. Disneyland remained shuttered throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Disney California Adventure could return to full operation on April 20 after A Touch of Disney concludes. Disneyland could reopen sooner than DCA. Disney could decide to use a phased reopening plan in Anaheim and open Disneyland and DCA on staggered dates. Here in California, we’re encouraged by the positive trends we’re seeing and we’re hopeful they’ll continue to improve and we’ll be able to reopen our parks to guests with limited capacity by late April,” Chapek said at a shareholders meeting. They will be reopening with the limited capacity of 15%. I think that 15% will work out well so that it won’t be so crowded and other guests can have social distancing with masks required and other safety measures to prevent the spread from the virus.

However, for those who are have been waiting for Avengers Campus to open up at Disney’s California Adventure park, it will not open when Disneyland reopens. Prior to the closing of the theme parks in mid-March, Disneyland announced that MARVEL Avengers Campus would be opening July 18th. Of course, this was pushed back due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Though there is no specific date for the opening of the new Marvel-themed land, guests can expect to experience it later this year.

All of this information just came from the Disney news today.

So, what do you guys think about these big updates at Disney World and at Disneyland?!

I would love to hear lots of comments, thoughts, concerns, opinions, and questions down below!

Stay tuned for Disney updates.
