George Lucas changed filmmaking forever with the original Star Wars, as we all know. Yet the assembly versions of the film were pretty much a disaster. Early cuts screened for Lucas’ filmmaker friends had them telling the young filmmaker “better luck next time.” The film was ultimately saved by an editing team consisting of Richard Chew, Paul Hirsch, and Marcia Lucas, George’s then-wife. Nevertheless, this early “Lost Cut” of Star Wars remains a fan obsession.
As this video essay from YouTuber Film Spaced (via Boing Boing) explains, there’s a lot more to this lost cut of Star Wars than most fans are aware. Some things cut out of the film eventually found their way back in, thanks to the 1997 Special Edition version. Scenes like Jabba the Hutt and Han’s confrontation, and Luke’s reunion with his buddy Biggs. Yet, a lot more never did. You can watch the full video explaining the lost cut of A New Hope right here:
Aside from the omissions most fans know about, this cut (which isn’t lost at all really, just locked away in the Lucasfilm archives) has tons of other little trims here and there. Reactions from characters that just slow the film down, or just don’t land, all eventually went away. Editors Chew, Hirsch, and Marcia Lucas were wise to cut the film down to a much faster pace. They removed needless “walk and talks” between Vader and random Imperials. Also scenes like Aunt Beru getting some blue milk from a dispenser. (Well, we assume it’s blue, since this footage is black and white).

The Lost Cut also has a much longer Rebel attack on the Death Star. It doesn’t have the added threat of the battle station planning to destroy the Yavin IV base, something later edited in. This is maybe the biggest genius move from the editors, and totally alters the tone of the whole finale. It would definitely be fascinating to see the Lost Cut for academic purposes. A fascinating “what if?” story to one of the most important films of all time. But as this video illustrates, the cut we got back in 1977 was ultimately far superior.

Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert are headed back to reality television. According to E! News, the loving couple has secured their own reality show with the network titled We Got Love: Iman & Teyana. The show is described as “an unfiltered behind-the-scenes look at their lives juggling music, fashion, business and family.”
There’s no word on if filming has began yet. Their first reality show, Teyana & Iman, premiered in 2018 on VH1.
Now that Taylor is taking a break from music, she is focusing more on acting and production. In January, she announced that she had secure a five-acre lot for her own production studio for her company, Aunties 360.
“Although I closed certain chapters in 2020, I’m blessed with the book of opportunity,” she wrote on Instagram. “Entering my dirty 30 with my husband gifting me with my very own movie camera…to bringing in the new year closing on my very own compound with my partner in crime and Co-Founder of The Aunties Inc @coco_gilbert. We, The Aunties are proud to announce, Aunties 360, a 5-acre lot that includes production, dance, recording, prop studios, equipment and 360 green screen rooms for creatives!”
Besides her role in Coming 2 America, she also has been summoned by Dionne Warwick via Twitter to star in her biopic. She revealed to MadameNoire that Warwick’s story will be adapted into a series because there’s so much to tell.
“A movie is just not enough,” the mother of two said. “We could be at a season finale and there’s still be more to her story. Her story is still going. So I don’t want to put her in a box where we’re trying to figure out her whole life in an hour and a half. So I’m looking at it from all aspects. As an artist, as a director as a producer, in all ways.”
Last night, Barbz went crazy after Nicki Minaj went on Instagram live with Young Money Cash Money alum Drake and dropped her famed Beam Me Up Scotty mixtape. Following the re-release of hits such as “Seeing Green” and “I Get Crazy” from 12 years ago, Minaj also broke her silence on the passing of her father Robert Maraj on her official website in a long update to her fans about Netflix binge-watching and pregnancy cravings.
“Tho I can’t really bring myself to discuss the passing of my father as yet; I can say it has been the most devastating loss of my life,” the “Itty Bitty Piggy” rapper shared on her website. “I find myself wanting to call him all the time. More so now that he’s gone. Life is funny that way. May his soul rest in paradise. He was very loved & will be very missed.”
Maraj unexpectedly passed away in February from a hit-and-run in Mineola, New York. According to Today, Maraj was hit at approximately 6:15 PM and though he was taken to a hospital, he was pronounced dead the next day. He was 64 when he passed. The next week, an arrest was made for 70-year-old Charles Polevich. According to Nassau County Police Det. Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick, “Mr. Polevich did stop at that time, but then fled after that once he saw that he had injured this person.”
