Directed by acclaimed filmmakers Shola Lynch and Reginald Hudlin, Number One on the Call Sheet brings a nuanced perspective to these conversations, blending historical context with firsthand experiences from Hollywood’s most influential Black actors. Black Girl Nerds interviewed the esteemed filmmakers in the video featured below.

Gocha Hawkins continues delighting foodies in Atlanta and beyond with her new cookbook centered on classic brunch favorites.

Gocha Hawkins has already made a name for herself in the Atlanta food scene. The former hairstylist has become a seasoned restauranteur with two hotspots, Gocha’s Tapas and Breakfast Bar, in her name. Now, she is offering up her own recipes in a new cookbook, Cooking with Gocha, to recreate her signature dishes in one’s own kitchen.

The cookbook features 90 recipes that can make anyone’s morning, from savory shrimp and grits to a vegan, yet flavorful, cauliflower steak entree. Hawkins, a self-proclaimed “pancake connoisseur,” knows her way around any kitchen, proved by her always-packed restaurants that have captivated Atlantans.

Hawkins got her start after moving to Atlanta’s southwest side in 2014. She noticed how limited the food options were in this area, and decided to take the chance to flex her own chef skills. Hawkins spoke to BLACK ENTERPRISE about how this transition helped her capitalize on her passions while also uplifting this underserved community.

“I moved to the Southwest side of town in 2014 and I was like wow, this community is at a disadvantage,” she shared to BE’s Director of Digital Content Ida Harris.

“There’s nothing over here but chain restaurants. I [thought] it would be a perfect opportunity to open up a breakfast restaurant because that’s what was missing in my area.”

According to Hawkins, this bet on herself led to a food empire beyond her wildest dreams. After starting her first restaurant in 2018, her ability to adapt to her customers’ needs, such as opening a food truck during the pandemic, has led her to steady and rising success despite an unpredictable food industry.

With lines out the door, she expanded her Cascade location of the Breakfast Bar to double its capacity, taking over the neighboring space that had shut down its business. While surrounding businesses came and went, Hawkins stood by her decision to keep her flagship location in the heart of its neighborhood.

“I think that’s something that a lot of Black neighborhoods are affected by, but you chose to stick around. I feel like it’s extremely important to invest in the community,” explained Hawkins.

“That is the number one thing that stimulates the brand is investing in community, you know, like providing jobs and just growing our community in general. I feel like without giving back to the community in that way we’re we’re just another big chain restaurant, you know? I feel like the small businesses have so many opportunities to capitalize on stimulating a community.”

What makes Hawkins’ dishes so unique is that there was no distinct recipe behind them. While she has since curated direction for her food, what drove the innate chef is her own personal taste and desire for meals that simply tasted good. However, she still emphasizes the importance of nutrition in her menu development.

“The way that I eat and the way that I cook at home is what I wanted to bring to the restaurant because I knew that it would be a good fit for everyone. [Everyone] wants to be much healthier now, they’re moving to that direction and I want to make recipes that are easy, flavorful, and convenient.”

Taking over a year and a half to curate her recipes, fans of Gocha’s southern brunch can make cooking a convenient pasttime. She is also offering insight into her retail line, letting readers recreate her hot sauce and pancakes to reimagine the breakfast bar at home.

Hawkins does not want to add anything to the community that is not serving it, whether on her menu or her business portfolio. From food giveaways to coat drives, Hawkins pours back into those that dine with her.

The entrepreneur also wants her employees to thrive, offering grants for workers attending college. As for what she plans to serve next, Gocha’s will expand into a shared kitchen to help chefs that cannot afford a brick-and-mortar space. Launching in Atlantic station under her Gocha’s Restaurant Group brand, the opportunity to help other emerging cooks get a leg up remains part of Hawkin’s vision.

“My advice to any entrepreneur would be to study whatever it is that you’re trying to do and get the knowledge,” she concluded.

“Invest in yourself and you’re gonna get some nos, no doubt. So when you get those no’s, don’t give up. Continue to invest in yourself and just keep going.”

Suits LA is continuing to bring more of the original show’s cast into the fold. Harvey Specter and Louis Litt are both heading to LA and now their former boss will appear too. Deadline reports that David Costabile will reprise his role as Daniel Hardman in Suits LA. 

Daniel was the co-founder of Pearson Hardman, the firm that all the Suits drama revolved around. After embezzling money to take care of his mistress while his wife died of cancer, Jessica Pearson and Harvey Specter hit him with a little blackmail to get him out of the company. He was the show’s first villain and continued to pop up throughout its run to be a horrible human.

He comes back, gets kicked out again, and constantly bumps heads with Harvey. Their final showdown in season 8 led to Hardman losing his license to practice law. It was all so darn messy and we loved it.

It will be interesting to see how Daniel Hardman plays into Suits LA. It could simply be through a series of flashbacks or there could be news that he is somehow practicing law again despite his many schemes. We don’t know if he will share the screen with Harvey or Louis, if his appearance is in the present. But we are pretty sure that no matter what, he’s going to bring a lot of drama.

Revelations From the Yellowjackets Season 3, Episode 7—“Croak”

Past Timeline: Other People Know Where the Wilderness Is, and a University Has Been Using It as a Biological Study Space

On Yellowjackets, the wilderness has seemed like a magical, impenetrable space. But, in truth, other people have been visiting the wilderness all along. We learn on Yellowjackets season three, episode seven that a university with the moniker KHU has come by with some regularity to study the biology of the environment, and especially the frogs. The supplies Coach Ben found came from this university. We know that it has been seven years since the university visited, but now researchers are back. Hopefully someone knows where they are.

Past Timeline: The Strangers in the Wilderness Were Frog Biologists

The mysterious strangers we met in Yellowjackets season three, episode six, are actually frog biologists and their wilderness guide. Hannah and Edwin came to the Yellowjackets’ wilderness to study a rare mating act of the Artic Banshee frog, and they brought along a wilderness guide, played by Joel McHale, called Kodi or Kodiak. They surely got more than they bargained for.

Past Timeline: Yellowjackets Season 3, Episode 7 Confirms Lottie Killed Edwin

Oops. Lottie says the wilderness doesn’t want the strangers in Its space, and that’s why she killed the frog biologist Edwin. But unfortunately for Lottie, this is the first straight-up murder that involves a victim not from the Yellowjackets team and co. We’ll have to see how that plays out for Lottie after the team’s rescue.

Past Timeline: Hannah, One of the Biologists, Has a Child

We see Hannah record parts of the infamous tape Shauna receives in Yellowjackets season three, episode seven. And these scenes reveal that Hannah has a child back in the real world. We bet that child may eventually not feel too happy that his mother never returned from a trip to the woods.

Present Timeline: Tai has Been Evil Tai For a While, Confirms Yellowjackets Season 3, Episode 7

As we suspected, Van confirms that Tai has indeed not been Tai but other/evil Tai for quite some time. As Van gets close to dying on Yellowjackets season three’s seventh episode, she has a vision of Tai beside her, and Tai’s mouth is covered in dirt. As we know, Other Tai sometimes just has to shove soil into her mouth. Van says she knew it was evil Tai and demands to know how long Tai has been her other self. But evil Tai only smiles wickedly and promises that she’ll save Van’s life.

Questions From the Yellowjackets Season 3, Episode 7—“Croak”

Past Timeline: Can Hannah, the Frog Biologist, Help the Team Escape?

The Yellowjackets have acquired a new member of camp in episode seven of season three. Hannah, the frog biologist, is now amongst their number. We don’t quite know how she’ll fit in, or if she can help the Yellowjackets. She’s not a guide, after all. And she doesn’t have any way to contact the outside world. Still, her presence begs the question of whether she’ll be important to the team’s ultimate rescue on Yellowjackets.

Past Timeline: Will Joel McHale’s Character Kodi Help Travis and Akilah to Escape?

Meanwhile, Travis and Akilah have saved the life of wilderness guide Kodi. Joel McHale’s Kodi certainly seems like he has a shot at escaping the wilderness on Yellowjackets season three, but will he want to help Travis and Akilah out as well? He certainly seems a bit unsavory. We’ll have to see how this tense trio get along.

Past Timeline: Can the Broken Satellite Phone Be Fixed on Yellowjackets?

Yellowjackets season three, episode seven, makes a pretty big deal out of showing us the broken satellite phone. But at one point, Hannah claims she might be able to fix it. Could that be true? Will the Yellowjackets be able to fix the broken phone and reach civilization? And even if they can, will anyone be able to find them?

Past Timeline: Melissa Is Shot on Yellowjackets Season 3, Episode 7, But Will She Die?

Kodi shoots Melissa with his crossbow on Yellowjackets season three, episode seven. But will Melissa die in the wilderness? Tai, Van, Misty, and Shauna all seem to think she’s dead; they note so in the present day. But is that too easy? Only time will tell. We guess faking one’s death in the wilderness would be easy, but getting rescued without being exposed would be tough. On the other hand, it doesn’t look like Mari survives the wilderness either, and Shauna tells Mari that if Melissa dies, she’ll kill her. Maybe that was a promise.

Past/Present Timeline: Who Is Hannah’s Child on Yellowjackets?

Clearly, Hannah’s child is an important figure in Yellowjackets season three. In all likelihood, they are the person responsible for tormenting Shauna, killing Lottie and sending the tape. But just who is Hannah’s mystery child?

Present Timeline: Why Did Tai See Lottie the Day She Died?

Tai admits that she saw Lottie on the day she died in Yellowjackets season three, episode seven. She tells Van that it was so she could talk to Lottie about It and how It could help Van survive. But is there more to the story? Things do seem to get bloody around Lottie and sometimes Tai. And Tai, especially as Other Tai, definitely has no compunctions about killing. What did Lottie and Tai really say to one another that day?

Present Timeline: What Will Shauna Do to Hannah’s Daughter?

Shauna is pulling up outside the home of Hannah’s daughter when we leave her in Yellowjackets season three’s seventh episode. But what is she planning? Will she attack Hannah’s daughter? One never knows with Shauna.

Present Timeline: Did Shauna Kill Lottie on Yellowjackets Season 3?

Yellowjackets season three, episode seven presents us with the idea that Shauna’s DNA matches the DNA Misty took from under Lottie’s fingernails. Of course, this is according to Walter. Can we trust Walter? Can we trust Shauna? Did Shauna really kill Lottie on Yellowjackets season three? We suppose the season is about to tell us for sure.

Yellowjackets season three only has a few more episodes left, and we’ll be hungrily keeping track of them all.
