Writer: Leah Williams / Artist: Valerio Schiti / Marvel Comics

Is it just me or did The Trial of Magneto stop being about Magneto being on trial very quickly? It seems like the train jumped the tracks and didn’t have enough dignity to just crash. And now, we’re all just reading along riding the Krakoa Express long after the conductor has abandoned his post.

To be fair, there is good material in The Trial of Magneto #4. There is something substantially fulfilling about the Scarlet Witch not only facing the certainty of what her future self WILL do and what her present self has already done but also learning to not allow that to be the whole story of her. It’s a lesson that could be adopted by many of us, but it’s not really given the gravitas it deserves. And with Magneto essentially having been pushed to the back burner, it’s not like the rest of the panel time is being put to better use.

The Trial of Magneto #4

The other exchanges in the book seem dull and unimportant. Script wise, I believe the kids would say this issue “isn’t giving what it’s supposed to give.” It’s actually a shame because Valerio Schiti gives the book some truly A-game work that really jumps off of the page. Wanda facing herself a-la OG Mortal Kombat and mutants versus kaiju makes for fun, visually arresting superhero action that X-books are becoming a master class in.

Bottom Line: I almost hate how gorgeous The Trial of Magneto #4 is, because it feels squandered on this lackluster script. I hope this reads better as a trade paperback because so far, it’s not the best.

The Good Asian #7 Review

https://blacknerdproblems.com/the-good-asian-7-review/

Writer: Pornsak Pichetshote / Artist: Alexandre Tefenkgi / Image

I’m not sure whether or not I first learned the term in high school English classes or one of the many criminal procedurals that I watched, but the concept of “parallel construction,” analogous elements arranged in similar ways, is just a fun phrase and also an interesting exercise. Parallel construction is meant to evoke both the similarity and drastic differences, and that is none more evident than with The Good Asian #7 building these comparisons between the Hui Long Killer and Edison Hark.

After seven issues, Pichetshote continues to astound with his ability to create a thrilling adventure story. With the revelation that the Hui Long Killer is actually half-white and the illegitimate and forsaken son of a millionaire, it very much makes him the perfect antagonist to Edison Hark, who at the start of the issue finds himself in dire straits. The killer has the cop at his mercy is always a fun trope to watch unfold, and Edison making rapid fire connections about the Hui Long killer while desperately scanning the environment for a way out a thrilling watch. Tefenkgi masterfully constructs the panels to give the perfect perspective on each page. We see the malice and rapidness of the Hui Long killer, we see the determination of Edison, and we see their parallel tracks collide with each other at a blistering violent speed.

The Good Asian #7

The Good Asian #7 is a brutal issue. This is a climatic moment in the backhalf of the series, and it’s one of the most intimate and violent issues to date. We get a lot of exposition about the killer, and then we get the ideological and physical struggle of two different types of 1930’s societal outcasts. It’s the type of stuff I live for. It’s the provocations of ideas that I myself have struggled with as a mixed Filipino-American. It’s the crystallization of a very complicated situation, and I adore it.

Pichetshote and Tefenkgi have come together month after month to produce one of the best crime comic, if not comic comic, of 2021. Every aspect of the textual and verbal components meld together to form a harmonious cacophony; a thrilling tale with intrigue and action and there are no signs of them slowing down as we race towards the inevitable conclusion.

9.6 “Pipe Bursts” out of 10

‘King of Spies #1’ Review

https://blacknerdproblems.com/king-of-spies-1-review/

Writer: Mark Millar / Artist: Matteo Scalera / Image Comics

Mark Millar remains one of the prolific comic scribes of the modern era, but also one of the most divisive, hardly in the same conversations as his peers. Anyone who has read comics long enough is pretty familiar with his style. He likes to take a well-known genre and have at it with a proverbial sledgehammer, usually giving us a protagonist that’s a tough sell while also building them up to make us believe in the genre again. This is usually a hit or miss tactic. Sometimes, you end up with something heartfelt and meaningful like his work in Starlight or Huck. Other times, you end up with something excessive and chaotic like Nemesis. King of Spies #1 at least gives hope for the former.

From the first panel, it’s clear that Roland King is the greatest spy Her Majesty’s Secret Service has ever produced. The problem is that now, in his golden years, he’s looking back on his life and realizing he hasn’t been the greatest human being. He hasn’t been saving the world like you might read in an Ian Fleming novel….he’s been maintaining the status quo from the shadows. The corruption, corporate interests overriding the common good, greed….most of which he indirectly upheld over the years. And that’s not even starting on his personal life. And now….with not long left to live, he’s decided to do something about it.

King of Spies #1

Millar’s “King” seems to, on some level, represent so much of the common human populace living in the wake of the pandemic, realizing the capitalism machine has drained them dry and will move on without them. The only difference is his feeling powerless is channeled into his particular set of skills. Millar’s King of Spies #1 hits the ground running and doesn’t lose speed even in its moments of exposition. You can feel the weight of his choices pinning him down worse than old age or gravity ever could. Visually, one could easily classify this book at “best in the business” level artwork. Matteo Scalera spares no expense at any part of King of Spies #1 but truly shines during the action beats. There’s so much pomp and violence going on and yet everything is still clear and easy to follow. Anyone who has read Black Science knows Scalera really has a unique ability to keep the pages turning with a frantic pace only seen in action movies.

Bottom Line: Millar seems to have a lot to say about the world his hero lives in and the parts he contributed (or didn’t contribute) to, and it’s one of the highlights of a book that’s already off to a strong start as far as action and dialogue is concerned.
