Futurama has been missing from our lives for 10 years. We’ve missed that show breaking our brains. Luckily Hulu announced a 20-episode Futurama revival in February 2022. Though the initial news came with the question of whether John DiMaggio would return as Bender (he thankfully did), the dust settled and now we have a teaser for the Futurama revival, as well as a release date. We first spotted this news at Variety.

We did say teaser. The glimpse into Bender, Fry, and Leela’s collective future is brief. The ridiculousness we’ve come to expect from Futurama is certainly there, especially with them making fun of their newest home on Hulu.

The Futurama season 11 synopsis says:

After a brief 10-year hiatus, Futurama has crawled triumphantly from the cryogenic tube, its full original cast and satirical spirit intact. The 10 all-new episodes of season 11 have something for everyone. New viewers will be able to pick up the series from here, while long-time fans will recognize payoffs to decades-long mysteries—including developments in the epic love story of Fry and Leela, the mysterious contents of Nibbler’s litter box, the secret history of evil Robot Santa, and the whereabouts of Kif and Amy’s tadpoles. Meanwhile there’s a whole new pandemic in town as the crew explores the future of vaccines, bitcoin, cancel culture, and streaming TV.

The new season of Futurama will debut on Hulu on July 24. Season 11 has 10 episodes, and they’ll drop weekly.

A Black transgender organizer was killed by a Walgreens security guard on April 27 in San Francisco. Banko Brown, 24, was recently denied a housing opportunity he’d long been pursuing. Turned away from numerous homeless shelters, he eventually resigned to sleeping on the metro. Brown eventually ventured into a downtown Walgreens hoping to feed himself, and was confronted by a security guard accusing him of theft. A scuffle ensued, and minutes later, Brown was dead—he had been fatally shot.

The San Francisco community reacted in anger and shock at the subsequent handling of Brown’s death and the conditions that contributed to the organizer’s circumstances.

After the public insistence on answers, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, who has declined to pursue charges against the security guard, released footage of Brown’s death on May 15.

In the video, Brown is shown attempting to exit the convenience store with a bag of items when he is stopped by the guard, Michael Earl-Wayne Anthony. After Brown pushes Anthony’s shoulder and Anthony pushes him back, the two become involved in a brief struggle. The pair eventually fall to the ground, where Anthony is seen engaging Brown in a chokehold-like manner while on the victim’s back. During this altercation, Brown allegedly threatened to stab the security guard multiple times, and after Anthony allowed Brown to stand, he once again attempted to flee with the items. Then, Anthony draws his weapon while aiming it at the ground. After Brown makes a lunging motion, Anthony shoots him in his chest. Soon after, Brown dies from a single gunshot wound.

In a press conference on May 15, District Attorney Jenkins said, “We do not believe there is sufficient evidence to overcome what we would expect his defense of self-defense to be,” Jenkins said. “[Anthony] has specifically articulated to the police, more than once, the facts surrounding the incident and explained that he believed he was in imminent danger, and at this time we don’t believe there is anything to overcome those statements.”

However, the video is not all of Brown’s story. Brown’s families and friends spoke to the Guardian, describing Brown’s desperate cries for help. “It hurts me that another trans person of color is gone without being seen,” said Juju Pikes Prince, a close friend of the victim and a transgender woman who has previously struggled with being unhoused herself.

Brown’s death also comes on the tail-end of San Francisco’s rising homelessness crisis and targeted attacks on the unhoused, despite the city’s efforts to improve housing for the transgender community. Just two weeks ago, news broke that San Francisco’s former fire commissioner Don Carmignani had been linked to several attacks on the homeless using bear spray. Throughout the country and in the wake of the murder of Jordan Neely, many unhoused people have been faced with dire circumstances, and Brown exemplifies the country’s failure.

A fancy New York City restaurant group is under fire in a new lawsuit for allegedly allowing racial discrimination against Black employees.

The Daily Beast reports that the Dinex Group is being sued by a former Black employee claiming he was fired after speaking out against managers who racially discriminated against wait staff. The lawsuit states the restaurant, owned by French chef Daniel Boulud, violated state labor laws by allowing blatant racism in the workplace.

Working as a host at Le Pavillon in Manhattan’s high-end East Side, the employee recalled an incident from Aug. 19 when a customer refused to have him take them to their table, according to the lawsuit. When he told the lead host what happened, he was told Le Pavillon tends to have a common practice of catering to patrons’ needs, including racist tactics of not wanting to be served by Black wait staff.

He later explained the situation to a manager on Aug. 25. According to the lawsuit, the workplace environment became tense for him. Shifts were scheduled for days he wasn’t available to work, he wasn’t allowed to take breaks during his shifts, and staff became overly critical of his work. He was fired on Sept. 9 after the restaurant claimed he lost some keys, but the suit says he was not responsible for the keys on the day the keys went missing.

Due to his firing, the former employee says he has suffered financially and mentally. He is suing for lost wages and benefits, legal fees, punitive damages, and looking for The Dinex Group to receive a civil penalty. Ironically, Le Pavillon won ENR New York Magazine’s Regional Best Project for Best Residential/Hospitality in 2022.

The Dinex Group’s CEO Sebastien Silvestri says the allegations against the restaurant aren’t true. “We look forward to defending our reputation,” he said.
