At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, fans got a first look at the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks.
On Saturday, July 27, at SDCC 2024’s “Star Trek Universe” panel, featuring an exclusive conversation with cast members Tawny Newsome (who plays Beckett Mariner), Jack Quaid (plays Brad Boimler), Noël Wells (plays Tendi), and Jerry O’Connell (plays First Officer Jack Ransom), Paramount+ finally debuted the official teaser trailer for Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5, the final season of its hit animated comedy series.

Howard University announced the cancellation of its Homecoming Tailgate Party, to the disappointment of many.
The university, located in Washington, D.C., is celebrating its 100th homecoming since the school’s founding. The weekend will not lack activities. According to Howard’s official website, “Student Fashion Show, Greek Step Show, Yardfest, Homecoming Parade, Young Alumni Day Party Brunch and Alumni Jazz Brunch” are just a few of the scheduled events. The centennial celebration for past and current Bison will look a little different this year. The Tailgate, a Bison family reunion of sorts, will be notably absent.

Howard claims the removal of the official Tail Gate Party comes from the desire “to create a more unique and family-friendly experience on Saturday.”
David Bennett, senior vice president of Development and Alumni Relations, wrote, “Each year, Howard Homecoming appeals to students, alumni and members of the local community and, this year, we are confident that an even greater level of enthusiasm will be had by people as we celebrate 100 years of Homecoming,” Bennet continues, “It’s our intention to create a week of events that appeal to everyone – past, current and even future Bison.”
Howard, affectionately called “the Mecca” by its Alumni, is one of the nation’s leading HBCUs. Not only is the institution renowned for its education, it is also known for its impressive list of celebrity alumni. The Howard Halls have been graced by current Vice President and presidential candidate Kamala Harris, Oscar winner Samuel Jackson Jr., and late actor Chadwick Boseman.

The campus is considered a bastion of Black culture and is attended by Black people from all across the diaspora. The Tailgate Party is a much-anticipated event that allows past and present Bison to network and fellowship,

One of Warner Bros.’s earliest coups of the TV age was acquiring the Hanna-Barbera library of animated programming. With it, they own stuff like Scooby-Doo, The Flintstones, Jonny Quest, et al. Cable network Cartoon Network began as a joint venture between Warner and Turner as a place to showcase classic animated programming. Once it started making its own new programming, and acquiring newer shows, it spun out Boomerang, a channel specifically for those older ‘toons. Eventually Boomerang launched a separate streaming service, but, as seemed inevitable, WB Discovery is sunsetting Boomerang and will absorb it into Max. Some of it, anyway.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Boomerang streaming service will cease operation on September 30 of this year. Subscribers and “some content” will be moved over to ad-free Max with no immediate change to subscriber price. That is, at least, a bargain. Boomerang is $6 per month while Max’s ad-free tier is currently $17 per month. Max already carries some of Boomerang’s content, including Looney Tunes shorts, Scooby-Doo series, Tom & Jerry, The Flintstones, etc. What else will come over is unclear at this time.
The Boomerang cable and satellite channel will continue to operate, because packages need channels. However this speaks to yet another way Warner Bros. Discovery under David Zaslav continues to consolidate all of its holdings into a single entity. Last month, WBD announced it would join with Disney+ and Hulu for a massive streaming bundle. Surely keeping as much in the Max portfolio as possible makes their end of the deal look more enticing. And I’m not going to say Boomerang was the best service out there. I tried it for a while and it was fairly pedestrian. But more and more, streaming, once the wild west of choice, is turning into mega corporations trying to increase their bottom line.

Summer is here and you’re likely in the mood to get your nails done. And, if you’re trying to budget and want to do your own nails, try a matte nail look.
“Achieving the perfect matte nail look depends on the quality of the matte topcoat you use,” Mazz Hanna, CEO of Nailing Hollywood, tells ESSENCE. “Higher quality topcoats will provide a better, longer-lasting matte finish.”
Additionally, you need to prep the digits regardless of the nail length. “It’s important to properly prep the nail before painting a matte mani as if the nail isn’t buffed to a smooth finish, then ridges in your nail will be really obvious,” Thea Green, Founder of Nails.INC, says. “To keep the look chic, I’d recommend a shorter nail look as longer nails with a matte finish may be too extreme for everyday wear.”
Below, find a step by step guiding to nailing down the matte look.
Make sure the nails are cleanAaliyah Smith, a celebrity nail expert and founder of NailBiz, Green and Hanna recommend cleaning nails to create a smooth surface to enhance the longevity of the manicure. “Remove any old polish, trim and file your nails to your desired shape, then gently push back and/or trim your cuticles,” Hanna says. “Clean your nail plate with a nail prep solution or isopropyl alcohol using a lint-free wipe to ensure your nails are free of any oils or debris before polishing.” Then, make sure to file your nails for your desired shape and length.
Apply a base coatSmith recommends using a LED lamp when you apply a clear base coat. “After the application, cure the base coat under an LED lamp for around 60 seconds,” Smith says. “This step is crucial for protecting the natural nail and providing a foundation for the color.”
Apply the matte nail polishOnce the cure is set, it’s time to apply the color in thin, even layers. Hanna recommends making sure to cure each layer under the LED lamp and repeat as desired. After applying and letting the base coat dry, apply two or three thin coats of the matte nail polish. Hanna also notes to make sure each coat dries to prevent smudging if you’re using regular or gel polish. If anything, cure each coat with a gel lamp.
How to maintain the matte lookBeing consistent with your matte nails will go a long way. “You can reapply the top coat if you notice it wearing off after a few days,” Hanna says. “When using oils and lotions, wipe the surface of your nail clean afterwards with water, or isopropyl alcohol if you have gel polish on, to prevent the matte finish from wearing off or becoming oily.”
