Step aside Annie Wilkes, Ma is in town.

Academy Award-winning actor Octavia Spencer stars in her first leading role in the Universal Pictures horror flick Ma.  A story about a lonely middle-aged woman (Sue Ann) who meets some teenagers and decides to let them party in the basement of her home. As it turns out for the teens, this inevitably becomes a big mistake. Sue Ann sets some house rules: One of the kids has to stay sober, don’t curse, and never go upstairs. But as Ma’s hospitality starts to curdle into obsession, what began as a teenage dream turns into a terrorizing nightmare, and Ma’s place goes from the best place in town to a horror house.

The following clips below feature interviews from Octavia Spencer (who plays Sue Ann). Juliette Lewis (Erica) and Diana Silvers (Maggie) who play mother and daughter. Maggie is the new kid at school and her mother Erica is a single mom. Maggie befriends a group of kids in her school: Gianni Paolo (Chaz), Dante Brown (Darrell), McKaley Miller (Haley) and Corey Fogelmanis (Andy).

Ma releases in theaters nationwide May 31st.

An 102-year-old woman is being evicted by her landlord because his daughter needs somewhere to stay. According to the Los Angeles Times Thelma Smith has lived in her Ladera Heights home for 30 years and her eviction is legal.

Her landlord reportedly ended her month-to-month lease because their daughter is graduating from law school and needs somewhere to live. In Los Angeles,  it’s totally legal to evict someone because your relative needs housing thanks to the Los Angeles’ Rent Stabilization Ordinance.

“The only thing I can say is that I’ve tried to live a good life,” Smith told KCBS-TV Channel 2. “I never wanted to harm anybody.”

Smith is leaning on family to find housing.  The Ordinance offers to find housing for people who are 62 and over and evicted however,  Smith lives outside the area that this applies to.

Her story has caught the attention of former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who met Smith while she worked as an executive secretary for the Sugar Ray Robinson Youth Foundation.

Smith has to move out by June 30th.

If you’re feeling nostalgic about your childhood, today’s a good day. River Gods have released the video for their latest track, “Stressed Out,” off of their upcoming Let Me Live EP, and the power pop tune is the perfect salve for millenial anxiety. The video features a young boy who has been tapped to film a commercial for the hit new sensation “Hatch-A-Friend,” a small Tamagatchi-like toy. Unfortunately, the boy’s new digital friend causes him to get lost in the imaginary world where love only goes one way. Raising a video game pet was always a big task as a kid, but it doesn’t feel far away from the pressures of today’s world.



As for the rest of the music video–oh man! Can you believe how obsessed we were with a small little screen meant to distract us from living an authentic life full of real experiences, all so we could lose ourself in a virtual world of nonsense that revolved around a creature who could never love us back? Glad those days are long gone. Must be why none of us are stressed out like we used to be…

The video’s director, Peter Rosati, said the idea for the video “hit pretty quickly” after he heard River Gods’ frontman Shiraz Dhume’s song the first time. “Something about a little kid singing these selfless lyrics of unrequited love to a Tamagotchi-like toy just felt too perfect,” Rosati said.

We agree, though things weren’t always so stressful in the ’90s. Sure, our obsession with video games and virtual realities should have been a warning for what was to come with our smartphones, but just like this song, the music was pretty great.
